    Senior Gender Equality, Diversity and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Officer

    General Position Summary

    Mercy Corps is currently seeking a Senior GEDSI Officer to support the country-level gender priorities. The Senior GEDSI Officer is responsible for leading the overall integration of GEDSI across-country programming. S/He is responsible for facilitating a participatory process to develop targeted gender strategies and frameworks tailored to this program and in line with the country's strategy. The Senior GEDSI Officer shall closely work with Mercy Corps’ GEDSI Advisor and conduct gender analysis in selected programs. S/He shall support the different Program Managers to ensure gender is integrated across  work plans with clear targets and timeframes including defined roles and responsibilities of each Program Manager and the team members to ensure better integration in each project activity. In addition, the Senior Gender Officer shall be responsible for facilitating increased awareness among Mercy Corps team members and partner organizations on the importance of gender integration into projects as well as identifying and promoting two to three areas where Mercy Corps has the potential to excel in gender integrated programming. Senior GEDSI Officer in consultation with GEDSI Advisor will provide regular support to the program GEDSI focal points and ensure program level GEDSI work plans are tracked regularly. 

    Essential Job Responsibilities

    Technical

    • Manage gender analysis data collection and develop recommendations based on assessment findings.
    • Closely work with Program Managers to integrate the findings from the gender analysis into project work plans and milestones.
    • Work closely with the Human Resources team to ensure gender accountability is incorporated into the position descriptions of team members.
    • Support the Program Managers and MEL in incorporating gender/age indicators in the project’s log frame.
    • Coordinate closely, work with, and support managers and partners to promote gender integration.
    • Support program teams in the development and delivery of training and capacity building on key gender topics to beneficiaries.
    • Collect and share learnings and best practices from gender integration from different programs with stakeholders and across the Mercy Corps Nigeria location.
    • Contribute to any surveys/assessments/evaluations conducted in the programs to ensure gender is fully incorporated and represented.

    Gender Mainstreaming

    • Work with GEDSI focal points to ensure that program and country staff understand and adhere to Mercy Corps’ Gender Minimum Standards.
    • Work closely with the M&E team to ensure sex and age-disaggregated data is collected, and that gender analysis is applied and used to adaptively manage program implementation.
    • Provide gender technical reviews to program proposals, program tools, and internal and external communications as needed across Mercy Corps Nigeria programs.

    Accountability To Beneficiaries

    Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring, and evaluation of our field projects.

    Supervisory Responsibility

     Reports Directly To: GEDSI Advisor

    Works directly with PaQ team members, DoP, HSSD, Program Managers, GEDSI focal points, Support functions, and Partners

    Knowledge and Experience

    • A bachelor’s degree in international development, social sciences, gender studies, or a related field.
    • At least 5 years of professional experience focused on GEDSI/ Gender mainstreaming in an NGO.
    • Substantial background in development/humanitarian programming including experience in developing and conducting GEDSI training, and advocacy. Previous experience in GALS methodology is desirable.
    • Demonstrated experience and ability to represent the organization and negotiate and defend Mercy Corps’ interests with a diverse range of international and local organizations and other groups professionally and appropriately
    • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines, and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, prioritization, and strong computer skills.
    • Previous experience working on US government and EU-funded programs is strongly preferred.
