Purpose of the Job
- To inspect, operate and maintain sub-stations and distribution apparatus consistent with company policies and safety regulations
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Distribution Substation Operator shall therefore be responsible, but not limited, for the following:
- Regular inspection of the station both inside the control room and outside in the switch yard to monitor and ensure proper operation of facilities.
- Switching and maintaining sub-station equipment for proper operational activities.
- Issuing protective tags through established safe clearance procedures for all equipment in the substation.
- Monitoring changes in load and making routine adjustments to meet the requirement of such change without immediate supervision.
- Maintaining a daily operating log on all operations (routine and emergency), and reports on line outages and weather conditions.
- Collating all required information from substations to ensure comprehensive operation plans.
- Maintain and monitor the database on substation faults, repair, and other operational data.
- Comply with Quality Management System / Occupational Health & Safety requirements including objectives and applicable regulations relating to assigned jobs.
- Preparation of all required reports for the attention of the Distribution Substation Operator Supervisor.
- Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Distribution Substation Operator Supervisor.
Minimum Educational & Professional Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge
- First Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- Prior experience in substation operations or a similar role within the power industry is advantageous,
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in the electricity/power sector especially in distribution/Injection substation operations in an electricity supply environment having medium and high voltage levels.
- Full Membership of a Relevant Professional Body.
Attributes and Competencies
- Knowledge of Electricity Regulations and Policies
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, substation equipment, and power distribution principles
- Proficiency in operating substation control systems and familiarity with SCADA systems
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to electrical substation operations and procedures.
