    Protection Legal Technical Officer

    Location: Michika and Madagali LGAs, Adamawa State
    Slot: 2
    Duration: Six Months

    Job Roles and Responsibilities

    Legal Support and Technical Guidance

    • Provide legal counseling and technical advice to beneficiaries on matters related to civil documentation, housing, land, and property (HLP) rights.
    • Supervise and support legal case handling, ensuring compliance with Nigerian legal standards and protection principles.Oversee referrals to competent authorities, courts, or relevant institutions and ensure proper follow-up.

    Awareness, Education, and Training

    • Organize and facilitate community awareness sessions on legal identity, land rights, and protection frameworks.
    • Build the capacity of NRM field teams, community focal points, and volunteers on legal aid and protection principles.
    • Ensure that legal information is accurate, accessible, and presented in a culturally appropriate manner.

    Stakeholder Engagement

    • Liaise with civil registry offices, traditional leaders, legal aid bodies, community leaders, and government authorities to improve access to legal documentation and dispute resolution.
    • Represent NRM in legal/protection coordination forums and maintain collaborative working relationships.

    Supervision and Mentorship

    • Provide technical support and day-to-day supervision of Protection Legal Assistants and volunteers.
    • Review case files and documentation prepared by the field team to ensure consistency and quality.
    • Contribute to team learning and encourage knowledge sharing on legal aid, protection, and inclusion.

    Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

    • Document legal support cases and protection concerns and feed into project monitoring and evaluation systems.
    • Support periodic needs assessments and contribute to analysis of protection risks and legal barriers.
    • Prepare regular progress reports, case studies, and success stories to inform internal learning and donor reporting.

    Requirements

    • Must be a qualified lawyer with proof of legal education and registration to practice in Nigeria.
      Bachelor’s degree in Law, Human Rights, Development Studies, Social Work, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in legal aid, civil documentation, or protection programming within a humanitarian or development context.
    • Strong knowledge of Nigerian legal frameworks, particularly those related to land rights, civil documentation, and protection.
    • Proven ability to train, supervise, and mentor field staff.
    • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to work in sensitive and conflict-affected environments.
    • Fluency in English and local languages (e.g., Hausa, Marghi, Fulfulde) is a strong advantage.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and mobile data collection tools.
    • Willingness to work in rural communities and travel between Michika and Madagali.
