    Knowledge Management Photography Consultant

    Background

    • USAID Advancing Nutrition is the Agency’s flagship multi-sectoral nutrition project, led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), and a diverse group of experienced partners. Launched in September 2018, USAID Advancing Nutrition implements nutrition interventions across sectors and disciplines for USAID and its partners.
    • The project’s multi-sectoral approach draws together global nutrition experience to design, implement and evaluate programs that address the root causes of malnutrition. Committed to using a systems approach, USAID Advancing Nutrition strives to sustain positive outcomes by building local capacity, supporting behavior change and strengthening the enabling environment to save lives, improve health, build resilience, increase economic productivity and advance development.
    • The overall purpose of the project in Nigeria is to provide technical support to the Government of Nigeria, and other nutrition stakeholders and generate evidence to enhance nutrition programming toward achieving the overall goal of improving nutrition for a healthy, productive, and resilient Nigeria.

    Objectives

    • USAID Advancing Nutrition is seeking the services of a professional photographer to document how Nigeria’s public policy to improve nutrition is impacting health care systems, communities and families.
    • The outputs of this work will communicate how USAID’s support contributes to reductions in malnutrition to a broad audience in Nigeria, the United States, and the rest of the world.
    • The images will be used for photo essays, on social media, in publications, and in other communications products.

    Activities
    Pre-Production:

    • Review shot list and scripts provided by the project and ensure that essential images and scenes are captured. Develop a travel itinerary.
    • The project will give examples of images sought by the project and oriented around USAID’s Video and Photo Shooting Guide.

    Production:

    • Shoot high-quality, original, and aesthetically compelling images and short video clips of families, government officials, partners, and stakeholders. The entire set of images should have a coherent style, look, feel, and treatment shot from multiple camera angles that can be incorporated into different communication products. Each scene and subject will be photographed with optimal lighting, framing, and composition. Photos should have the following variations: horizontal and vertical photos of the same subjects; dramatic angles; close-up, midrange, and wide-angle shots.
    • Images will meet high-quality documentary or photojournalism standards expected by international media organizations or leading photo agencies.
    • When and where possible, the use of professional and portable off-camera flashes or strobes is expected.
    • Photo subjects must give fully informed consent by a written form and will understand how the images could be used.
    • Photos will help connect the National Nutrition Plan to improved nutrition actions highlighting USAID Advancing Nutrition’s contributions, achievements, and impacts. The photographer will actively suggest scenes and poses to match the subject being documented. With guidance from the project, the photographer will cover the following themes:
      • Political Will, Policy, and Leadership and Dissemination events.
      • Nutrition In Health Systems
      • Essential nutrition actions of families, including fathers, and grandparents. and siblings.

    Throughout the assignment, the photographer will meet with project team members before each site visit to:

    • Discuss the background, scope, and logistics of photo sessions, and/or field visits, including establishing roles and responsibilities to ensure respect, informed consent, and accurate documentation of locations and subjects.
    • Discuss key messages, priority images/storyboard/shot lists for each site
    • Provide regular updates to the supervisor
    • Receive feedback from the supervisor
    • Finalize the work and submit all required photos and materials included in the deliverables section within the required timeframes.

    Post-Production:

    • Provision of an edited photo package.

    Deliverables and Schedule
    The Consultant is responsible for the timely submission of the following deliverables, as part of the SOW:

    • A set of 100 high-quality photos that will include:
      • Original RAW files shot with a full-frame DSLR camera (35mm equivalent) with a minimum resolution of 20 effective megapixels (5472 × 3648)
      • Edited/retouched files in JPEG format saved at maximum quality level (with minimal compression). The JPEGs will include two versions of each image:
      • Full size/maximum resolution version
      • A medium resolution version (each of these should be no larger than 5 megapixels)
    • A set of 6 short video documentaries covering various thematic areas – Food Systems, Capacity Strengthening, Early Childhood Development (under 5 nutrition), Nutrition and Health Systems, Stakeholder Engagement at supported communities, States, and National level.
    • Each photo and video should be edited for visual impact
    • Each photo should contain standard metadata, captions, copyright, and other relevant information. Caption information includes full names, name of the location, age of subject(s), and date.
    • Each photo should have a clear and consistent file name that will convey enough information to easily determine what each photo is. The naming and numbering form should be:

      • 2022-MM-DD-JSI-specific place-0002.jpeg
      • 2022-MM-DD-JSI-specific place-0003.jpeg
    • The photo set should be delivered on a high-capacity USB-C flash drive or external USB-C SSD, or transferred via a cloud-based service like Google Drive or Dropbox.
    • The photographer will obtain from each photographed person a completed and signed media release form provided by USAID Advancing Nutrition and submit the forms with the photo set.
    • The total LOE is approximately equivalent to [30] days.
    • All required deliverables and reports shall be submitted to the Activity Manager listed on Page 1.

    Consultant Qualifications

    • The successful photographer must have a minimum of five years of prior professional experience in non-studio field photography and/or other areas of the discipline such as documentary, portraiture, photo-journalism, commercial, corporate, and editorial photography and videography.
    • The successful candidate must have the specified photo equipment for professional delivery of services, including cameras, lenses, lighting rigs, etc.
    • The candidate must have the experience and ability to:
      • Work with natural light for portraiture, documentary, editorial, or similar assignments
      • Work in low-light conditions, including at night, in indoor or outdoor locations, using off-camera lighting accessories or specialized lenses;
      • Work in a rapidly moving and unpredictable environment between multiple locations with minimal set-up time for staging, posing, props, and lighting.
      • Adhere to deadlines and be flexible.
    • Please note, that the candidate must have a website or online portfolio.

    Copyright and Ownership:

    • The photographer expressly assigns all copyright to JSI without copyright, credit, or use restrictions. All photographs become the sole property of JSI, which will have unlimited and unrestricted usage rights. Photo credit will be given to the photographer by name in the usual and customary manner appropriate to the use of the photograph.
    • The photographer may use all the photos produced under this agreement for his/her portfolio and/or to show as samples of work to prospective clients.
    • The photographer may use the photos produced under this agreement for other purposes by obtaining the express written permission and consent by JSI.
