    Intern – Social Media

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Abuja is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) managed by the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC). UNIC Abuja serves as the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Nigeria and works closely with the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), UN agencies, media organizations, civil society, educational institutions, youth networks and digital communities to promote awareness and understanding of the work and priorities of the United Nations.  
    • The Social Media Intern will support UNIC Abuja’s digital communications, online engagement, multimedia storytelling and public outreach efforts. The intern will help strengthen the visibility of the United Nations in Nigeria by creating engaging content for social media platforms and supporting campaigns on sustainable development, peace and security, climate action, gender equality, human rights, information integrity, youth engagement and other UN priority issues.    
    • The intern will report directly to the Digital Communications Assistant (DCA) at UNIC Abuja. The internship will be full-time, in-person for three (3) to six (6) months maximum depending on the availability of the intern.  Learning Opportunities The internship provides an opportunity to:
    • Gain practical experience in strategic communications within the United Nations system.
    • Work on global and local advocacy campaigns connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
    • Develop skills in multimedia storytelling, audience engagement, digital analytics and public information.
    • Gain exposure to the work of the United Nations Country Team in Nigeria and the broader UN communications network.  

    Duties and Responsibilities  

    • Under the supervision of the DCA the intern will support the following functions:  
    • 1. Social Media Content Creation and Management (40%) Assist in drafting, editing and publishing social media content for UNIC Abuja platforms, including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and emerging digital platforms. Assist in producing multimedia content, including short videos, reels, graphics, photo stories, infographics and captions tailored for Nigerian audiences. Assist in supporting the localization of global UN campaigns and observances for Nigerian audiences and online communities. Assist in monitoring social media trends, hashtags, conversations and audience engagement relevant to UN priorities in Nigeria. Assist in maintaining a content calendar aligned with UN global campaigns, international days and UN Country Team priorities. Assist in ensuring content reflects UN values, editorial standards, multilingualism, diversity and inclusion principles.  
    • 2. Digital Engagement and Community Management (25%) Assist in supporting online engagement with journalists, students, youth groups, influencers, civil society organizations and other audiences. Assist in monitoring comments, messages and discussions across UNIC Abuja social media platforms and flag misinformation, harmful content or reputational risks where necessary. Assist in identifying opportunities for digital campaigns, partnerships and audience engagement. Assist in supporting live coverage of UN events, press briefings, conferences, campaigns and field visits through social media updates and multimedia storytelling. Assist in amplifying content from UN agencies operating in Nigeria and strengthen coordinated UN messaging.  
    • 3. Research, Analytics and Monitoring (20%) Assist in conducting research on digital media trends, audience behaviour and communication preferences in Nigeria. Assist in tracking analytics and preparing basic reports on social media reach, engagement, audience growth and campaign performance. Assist in monitoring misinformation and disinformation trends affecting UN-related issues, sustainable development, climate change, public health, elections, peace and security or humanitarian issues. Assist in contributing ideas and recommendations for improving digital outreach and audience engagement.  
    • 4. Administrative and Communication Support (15%) Assist in organizing digital campaigns, webinars, youth dialogues and public information events. Assist in drafting newsletters, media advisories, website updates and promotional materials. Assist in maintaining digital archives of photos, videos and communication materials. Perform other communication-related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Education Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Majoring in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Digital Marketing, Public Relations or a related field.  

    Work Experience

    • Experience in social media management, multimedia content creation, journalism, communications or digital marketing is desirable.
    • Experience using graphic design, video editing or social media analytics tools is an advantage.
    • Demonstrated interest in international affairs, sustainable development, media, public information or the work of the United Nations is desirable.  

    Skills and Technical Requirements

    • Familiarity with major social media platforms and digital engagement practices.
    • Basic skills in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut or similar multimedia editing tools are desirable.
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications and digital collaboration tools.
    • Understanding of trends in Nigeria’s digital media ecosystem is desirable.
    • Interest in information integrity, countering misinformation and ethical digital communications is an asset.  
    • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Intern – Graphics Design

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • The Graphics Design Intern will support UNIC Abuja’s visual communication projects and initiatives across several media by developing high quality infographics materials and a formatted design.
    • The intern will help strengthen the visibility of the United Nations in Nigeria through his/her creative talents to carry out visual communication projects and initiatives across several media by developing high quality materials for the SDGs campaigns workshops, dialogues, meetings with the idea to raise awareness and inspire action on Agenda 2030 and the SDGs in Nigeria and inspire change through pictures. This is part of the implementation of the global UN communication strategy at national level, working closely with the Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team in Nigeria through the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.  
    • The intern will report directly to the National Information Officer (NIO) at UNIC Abuja. The internship will be full-time, in-person for three (3) to six (6) months maximum depending on the availability of the intern.

    • Assist in designing themes, infographics, layouts and covers of documents. • Assist in developing figures, including colours, fonts, graphics and layout, and resulting materials such as Newsletters, brochures, banners, posters, fliers and booklets. • Assist in creating graphic templates to be used for reports and presentations. • Assist in preparing printing packages (all layout and design files) for printing of publications and other communication products (brochures, annual reports, banners, posters, booklets, leaflets, books, calendars, bulletins, flyers, cards).
    • Assist in delivering creative and innovative ideas for print, web and interactive presentations. This will require the graphic designer to provide technical solutions for use of new media. • Assist in creating animations for illustrative purposes such as animations, presentations and more advanced solutions.
    • Assist in maintaining templates (InDesign, CorelDraw, Publisher Word, PowerPoint etc.).
    • Assist in providing videography and photographic support to the UN Information Centre.
    • Assist in establishing and maintaining photo and video library.
    • Any other duties as may be requested.  Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Major in Information Technology, fine arts, graphic design, certified degree in CAD (computer-aided design and drafting) software relevant to the production of maps and illustrations is preferable.
