    Field Assistants (Sokoto)

    Context

    • Sokoto State, particularly Illela, Kebbe, and Gudu LGAs, is facing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by armed banditry, widespread displacement, food insecurity (including acute malnutrition), and climate-related shocks such as flooding. These crises have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of livelihoods, and an increasing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
    • Recent humanitarian assessments indicate that approximately 5.18 million people in Northwest Nigeria require multisectoral humanitarian assistance, with over 75% being women, children, and other vulnerable groups. As of early 2025, more than 51,000 IDPs were recorded in Sokoto State due to conflict and flooding, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian response.
    • CASFOD is implementing life-saving interventions in WASH, nutrition, and education to improve access to clean water, promote hygiene, support learning opportunities, and strengthen nutrition services for displaced and host communities.

    Role Purpose
    Under the direct supervision of the program Assistants, the Field Assistants will support day-to-day implementation of WASH-related hygiene promotion, nutrition services, and learning continuity initiatives in targeted IDP camps and host communities. The staff will contribute to achieving CASFOD’s humanitarian objectives by:

    •  Improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices
    •  Enhancing nutrition outcomes for children and caregivers
    • Supporting access to learning opportunities within emergency settings
    • Facilitating positive behaviour change on hygiene and health practices
    • Ensuring smooth implementation of WASH, health, nutrition, and education activities across project locations

    Roles and Responsibilities
    The Field Assistants shall undertake the following tasks:
    Program Implementation & Monitoring:

    • Conduct daily monitoring and record field activities related to hygiene promotion, nutrition, health, and education in camps and communities.
    • Provide weekly written or oral updates to the Field Assistant.
    • Support collection of project data for donor reports, assessments, and proposals.
    • Work closely with trained community groups to conduct sessions, meetings, and follow-up on WASH activities.
    • Monitor and document activities conducted by trained groups and community structures.

    Community Engagement & Mobilization:

    • Support camp officials and community volunteers during learning activities within IDP camps and host communities.
    • Communicate key messages on environmental hygiene, food hygiene, and water safety.
    • Promote hygiene practices while ensuring gender, protection, inclusion, and health considerations are integrated.
    • Conduct community mobilization activities in collaboration with community leaders and stakeholders.
    • Participate in coordination meetings within camps and communities and report outcomes to the Field Assistant.

    Operational Support:

    • Support the distribution of WASH-NFI kits and other essential items in project locations.
    • Attend field-based sector meetings as required.
    • Ensure adherence to CASFOD’s policies including child safeguarding, PSEAH, code of conduct, and accountability to affected populations.

    Qualifications and Experience
    Educational Qualification:

    • Minimum of a Diploma in Social Sciences, Public Health, Community Health, or a related field.

    Professional Experience:

    • 1–3 years of experience in hygiene promotion, health and nutrition activities, or learning support programs.
    • Experience working with local communities, including children, women, and vulnerable groups.

    Skills and Competencies:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work with diverse groups in challenging environments.
    • Understanding of gender mainstreaming, disability inclusion, and AAP.
    • Flexibility and willingness to work in humanitarian settings.
