    English-French Interpreter, Court of Justice

    To ensure the provision of interpretation services in the working languages ​​of the honorable judges in the exercise of their judicial mandate.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Provide interpretation from English to French during hearings, meetings and deliberations.
    • Provide interpretation services to judges and staff, as needed.
    • Ability to work within a team of highly qualified interpreters.
    • Mastering simultaneous, consecutive and other modes of interpretation.

    Qualifications

    • A Master's degree supplemented by a Diploma or Certificate in Conference Interpreting from a recognized institution. OR a university degree in conference interpreting from a recognized institution. 
    • Ten years of experience in interpreting (including four years as a permanent interpreter).
    • Demonstrates exceptional precision, consistency, and fidelity to the style and nuances of both the source and original languages.
    • Proficiency in assembling interpreting teams.
    • Ability to guarantee the strictest confidentiality.
    • Knowledge of terminological and documentary research techniques, and ability to exploit a wide variety of information sources.
    • Demonstrated professional skills and mastery of the subject.
    • Constant concern for his professional and personal development, and constant vigilance on developments in his profession.
    • Understanding of all accents, and ability to adapt to variations in pace and style.
    • Ability to find appropriate cultural equivalents and to take into account the cultural context; therefore, a thorough knowledge of the language and culture is essential.
    • Ability to maintain team cohesion and adopt a professional attitude in the cabin.
    •  Perfect command of the target language and excellent knowledge of the source language. Good knowledge of the third ECOWAS language is an asset.

    • Ability to demonstrate diplomacy, tact and respect towards others from diverse backgrounds, to understand diverse cultural viewpoints, particularly in West Africa, with the ability to convert diversity into opportunities to improve program/operation results.

    • Knowledge of ECOWAS rules and procedures in order to interpret and apply the texts of the directives appropriately, give technical advice, mentor others and evaluate performance.

    • Ability to gather information from different sources to identify the cause of problems, the consequences of alternative causes of action, potential obstacles, and ways to avoid the problem in the future.
    • Ability to break down highly complex situations/information into simple terms to explain recommendations and conclusions aimed at solving problems or improving operations/programs/projects.
    • Ability to develop new perspectives on situations, to apply innovative solutions to problems and to design new methods to resolve issues or disconnections when existing methods and procedures are inapplicable or no longer effective. 
    • Ability to communicate with impact, clearly and concisely, succinctly and in an organized manner, conveying credibility and confidence during presentations, setting expectations and explaining complex issues.
    • Ability to listen attentively and correctly interpret the messages of others and to react appropriately. 
    • Proven skills in technical writing and editing.
    • Demonstrate active listening skills to encourage stronger communication among team members, to show care and make them feel valued, and to boost employee engagement across all institutions and agencies.
    • Ability to provide constructive feedback, commend work, address shortcomings, and motivate direct subordinates to work at an optimal performance level.
    • Proficiency in information and communication technologies (ICT).
    • Proficiency in spoken and written communication in one of the official ECOWAS languages ​​(English, French and Portuguese). Knowledge of another language would be an additional advantage. 
    • Organizational and project/program management skills with significant experience in identifying the timelines, targets, costs and resources needed to produce operational/program/project results in accordance with the results-based management approach. 
    • Ability to set effective goals and targets for oneself, for others and for the work cell and to adjust work or project priorities in response to changing circumstances.  
    • Ability to use a participatory approach in project planning and to identify gaps affecting the achievement of program/project expectations and to design and implement the intervention plans necessary to achieve the desired task.
    • Ability to implement rigorous monitoring and evaluation practices and to establish regular reporting schedules for key results; 
    • Ability to plan, organize, control resources and comply with policies, procedures and protocols to achieve specific objectives.
