Conflict and Peace Building Coordinator at COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale

Overall Responsibilities

• The Conflict and Peacebuilding Coordinator will lead efforts aimed at strengthening governance capacities for local government institutions with the overall objective of improving their ability to prevent, manage and promote peaceful conflict resolution.
• The coordinator will also work on setting up and strengthening community feedback mechanisms and ensure all programme activities are gender responsive.
• The successful candidate will facilitate dialogue among stakeholders, and implement peacebuilding initiatives in Bade, Jakusko and Potiskum.
• The role involves designing and managing programs that foster social cohesion and sustainable peace to ensure the delivery of high-impact, integrated programming.
• Under the direct supervision of WFP’s Protection Officer based in Damaturu, the coordinator will also support with provision of technical guidance to the field teams to ensure alignment with donor expectations and best practices.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Program Management and Coordination:

• Lead the development, planning, and execution of the social cohesion components of the WFP-funded project, in close collaboration with the Project Manager (WFP Protection Officer).
• Ensure field-level implementation of project activities is timely, integrated, and aligned with community needs and donor expectations.
• Maintain regular engagement with other WFP cooperating partners for effective collaboration and project synergy.
• Facilitate strong coordination and cooperation with the staff to ensure all resilience building and livelihood activities are protection-sensitive and responsive to vulnerable populations.
• Design and implement conflict resolution and peacebuilding programs tailored to WFP project objectives.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

• Ensure project activities adhere to donor policies, humanitarian standards, and WFP guidelines.
• Regularly monitor program implementation for quality, effectiveness, and efficiency, recommending adjustments as necessary.
• Oversee the development of tactical and operational plans to support program objectives and community cohesion.

Advocacy and Representation:

• Representation in coordination meetings, technical working groups, and forums at the local and state. levels.
• Identify and pursue strategic opportunities for advocacy and partnerships that enhance program impact and visibility.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:

• Conduct regular program reviews to assess progress, capture lessons learned and adapt strategies in line with results-based management principles.
• Analyze potential sources of community tensions and make recommendations for targeted interventions, ensuring support reaches the most vulnerable groups.
• Prepare and submit high-quality project monthly reports successstories, publications, and other documentation as required to WFP.

Community Engagement:

• Promote active community participation in all phases of the project cycle—from planning to implementation and evaluation.
• Ensure community voices are integrated into program design and delivery to foster social cohesion and local ownership.
• Organize community forums and events focused on conflict resolution and peace promotion.

Team Support and Capacity Building:

• Provide technical support and guidance to team members to ensure high-quality project delivery.
• Support organizational fundraising efforts by contributing to proposal development and donor engagement for humanitarian programming.
• Ensure community feedback mechanisms are established, accessible and fully operationalized in all active areas of intervention.

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, government agencies, NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and collaboration.
• Training and Capacity Building
• Develop and deliver training workshops on conflict resolution, negotiation, and peacebuilding skills for staff and community members.
• Create educational materials and resources to promote understanding of conflict dynamics and peace processes.

Reporting:

• Prepare timely and accurate reports on the Resilience and Social Cohesion (Peace) project in Northeast Nigeria activities for WFP, and other stakeholders.
• Document lessons learned and best practices for organizational knowledge.

Networking and Partnerships:

• Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with NGOs, UN agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Leverage partnerships to enhance program reach and impact.

Knowledge Sharing:

• Facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and learning within WFP, the program partners and the broader humanitarian community.
• Organize workshops and learning events to share insights from the program.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Stay abreast of developments in conflict sensitive programming and humanitarian response.
• Perform other duties as necessary, commensurate with professional background and experience, as deemed by the supervisor.
• This Terms of Reference outlines the key responsibilities and expectations for the Resilience and social cohesion (peace) in Northeast NigeriaSocial Cohesion, Protection and Accountability to Affected Populations under the WFP/BMZ-funded project.
• The role is pivotal in ensuring that WFP delivers high-quality cash assistance to support the resilience and recovery of displaced populations in Northeast Nigeria.
• Language Requirements: Spoken and written fluency in English/ Hausa is an advantage.

Desired Experience

• Master’s Degree in Conflict Studies, Peacebuilding, International Development, or related fields.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, or community reconciliation programs.
• Strong understanding of Northeast Nigeria’s conflict dynamics.
• Proven experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.
• Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
