    Participatory Mapping & Data Specialist

    Start Date:   Immediately

    Location:      Lagos, Port Harcourt, or Cotonou

                            (with regular travel between the 3 cities)

    Who We Are:

    Justice & Empowerment Initiatives (JEI) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Lagos and Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and Cotonou, Benin.     Job Description:

    JEI is looking for a professional with significant experience in project or field research management and sophisticated policy-oriented data analysis to join our team as a Participatory Mapping & Data Specialist. He/she will be an innovative thinker and with strong technical skills, who is committed to supporting and strengthening grassroots data generation and turning data into meaningful tools for urban planning and policy advocacy. Participatory Mapping & Data Specialist will work with other members of JEI staff and grassroots community profiling and mapping teams.

    Responsibilities:

    • Train and support grassroots community mapping and profiling teams to strengthen community profiling, mapping, and enumeration processes to ensure consistency and accuracy of data, timely data capture, and regular data review and cleanup.
    • Analyze mapping, profiling, and enumeration data and create/generate maps, reports, and other “knowledge products” to feed into policy advocacy work and action-oriented publications.
    • Manage mapping, profiling, enumeration and other field research components of various projects to ensure project targets are achieved.
    • Participate in project management and other responsibilities beyond mapping and profiling data analysis as part of the JEI team.

    Qualifications:

    • 3+ years’ experience in survey design, field research, data management and data analysis.
    • Demonstrated skills in survey design, data collection, data cleaning/management, and data analysis. Experience with mapping, data collection, management, and statistical analysis softwares a significant plus.
    • Strong writing and research skills.
    • Training and teaching skills mandatory.
    • Experience working with grassroots movements a significant plus.
    • Degree in social sciences or other relevant field welcome.
    • Experience as an entrepreneur or in a startup environment a plus.
    • Bilingual fluency in English and French required.
    • Fluency in local languages a plus (incl. Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Egun, Fon).
    • Must be willing to work at least one Saturday per month.

    Creative Media Officer

    Job Description:

    JEI is looking for a dynamic multimedia (photo, video, audio) producer to join our team as Creative Media Officer. He/she will be an innovative thinker with strong technical skills, who is committed to access to justice and access to health for the poor and supporting grassroots efforts to engage in public dialogue and policy advocacy campaigns. The Creative Media Officer will work with all JEI staff, community paralegals, community health advocates, and team of grassroots media-makers, to co-create media projects across a wide variety of media projects, and disseminate/distribute same through impact media campaigns

    Responsibilities:

    • Work with JEI staff, community paralegals, community health advoctes, and grassroots media-makers, among others, to coproduce short-form documentaries, advocacy campaign videos, social ads, podcasts and community radio programs, and other multi-media advocacy materials.
    • Train grassroots media-makers and community paralegals on videography, audio recording, photography, video and sound editing, scripting, etc.
    • Participate in project management, development of distribution strategy, and other responsibilities that go beyond media production.
    • Serve as a media technology resource for JEI, advising the organization on media technology, managing our media archive, developing and managing workflow, advising on hardware and software acquisitions, production and design technology, and more. 
    • Assist with project implementation, including strategic distribution, outreach, and audience engagement efforts, which are unique to each project.

    Qualifications:

    • 3+ years’ experience working in documentary or television production, radio production, design or media and technology.
    • 2+ years’ experience working in civil society, building and running programmatic activities
    • Ability to produce short documentary films from conception to production, to editing, to final distribution. The ideal candidate will be a “jack of all trades producer,” with solid editing skills and professional videography skills and field sound recording skills.
    • Strong technical knowledge of video and sound editing software, design software, and production equipment.
    • Other technical and design skills are a plus (but not required). These include graphic design, motion graphics, UI design, coding, social media, etc.
    • Experience teaching or mentoring a significant plus
    • Bilingual fluency in English and French required.
    • Fluency in local languages a plus (incl. Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Egun, Fon).
    • Must be willing to work at least one Saturday per month.

    Financial Literacy Specialist

    Job Description:

    JEI is looking for a professional with significant experience in financial literacy education and business planning support for microenterprises to join our team as a Financial Literacy Specialist. He/she will be an innovative thinker and with strong technical skills, who is committed to supporting financial literacy education aimed at urban poor communities and strengthening financial literacy and business planning/management skills for microentrepreneurs with lower levels of formal education. The Financial Literacy Specialist will work with other members of JEI staff and grassroots community volunteer teams to develop and roll out financial literacy training / capacity building programs and other initiatives aimed at strengthening financial resilience of urban poor households.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop training materials and work with grassroots volunteer teams to roll out community financial literacy and business planning campaigns
    • Develop financial model for decentralized bulk-purchase initiatives
    • Build capacity of savings cooperatives established to serve urban poor social movements including targeted trainings for members, and professional support to design, model, test out, and iteratively improve the economic initiatives that use pooled resources to increase resilience of urban poor households
    • Document and analyze regulatory and other barriers limiting financial inclusion of the urban poor to feed into policy advocacy work and action-oriented publications.
    • Participate in project management and other responsibilities beyond financial literacy and business planning as part of the JEI team.

    Qualifications:

    • 3+ years experience in financial literacy, business planning, or related field.
    • Demonstrated skills in teaching and training (especially at the grassroots or community level), and extensive knowledge of financial literary and microenterprise business planning/capacity building.
    • Strong writing and research skills.
    • Experience working with grassroots movements a significant plus.
    • Degree in finance, economics, business or other relevant field welcome.

    Job Description:

    JEI is looking for a health or public health professional to join our team as the Public Health Lead to coordinate our work around access to health for the urban poor. This position requires an individual with substantial knowledge of health, preferably with public health background, and of teaching health education with a special focus on low literacy, multi-lingual, urban poor populations. The Public Health Lead must be committed to access to health and access to justice for the poor and to supporting grassroots efforts to engage in public dialogue and policy advocacy – especially around access to health care and health services. The Public Health Lead will work with all members of the JEI team, community health advocates, community paralegals, and the broader network of urban poor communities.

    Responsibilities:

    • Train and support community health advocates. This includes teaching public health topics to community health advocate trainees, and supporting them to carry out step-down presentations on health topics in their communities. Public Health Lead will convene regular meetings with community health advocates to discuss new issues, share best practices, and plan for health activities.
    • Develop health accompaniment program. This includes building existing health accompaniment work into a structured program with regular support for community health advocates assisting other vulnerable individuals to navigate the public health system, document barriers encountered, and strategize on how to best overcome them.
    • Coordinate with and assist JEI paralegals and lawyers to render assistance in cases of health rights violations. This includes participating in trainings and collaboratively developing advocacy strategies around improving health access, and supporting efforts to ensure accountability for individual cases of health rights violations.
    • Build partnerships and collaborations with public health authorities and other non-governmental actors. Strengthen connections between urban poor communities and primary health care centers, primary health boards, hospitals, and other civil society partners to increase access and outreach.

    Qualifications:

    • 3-5 years experience working in public heath or related field
    • 2+ years experience working in civil society, building and running programmatic activities, facilitating collaborations across different health stakeholders, and capacity building with partner/beneficiaries is preferred.
    • Bilingual fluency in English and French required.
    • Fluency in local languages a plus (incl. Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Egun, Fon).
    • Must be willing to work at least one Saturday per month.

    Staff Attorney

    Job Description:

    JEI is looking for a committed individual with significant civil litigation, criminal defense, and alternative dispute resolution experience to join our team as a Staff Attorney based in Lagos. He/she will be an innovative thinker and with strong technical skills, who is committed to using the law as a tool for social change and supporting grassroots legal empowerment and access to justice. The Staff Attorney will work with members of JEI staff, community paralegals, and members of grassroots movements we support.

    Responsibilities:

    • Work with JEI’s legal team and community paralegals to provide grassroots legal aid and legal education to urban poor populations in Lagos, with a focus on persons living in slums/informal settlements, persons working in the informal economy, persons living with disabilities, and minorities.
    • Train, encourage, and supervise community paralegals in Lagos.
    • Draft and file legal processes and make court appearances.
    • Conduct legal research in support of strategic litigation and advocacy.
    • Participate in project management and other responsibilities beyond paralegal supervision, litigation, and research as part of the JEI team.

    Qualifications:

    • At least 5 years experience in civil litigation and criminal defense. Please describe the required experience in a short cover letter. Candidates with more than three years’ experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
    • Degree in law and admission (current) to the Nigerian Bar.
    • Demonstrated ability to use law as a tool for social change.
    • Strong legal writing, legal research, and oral advocacy skills.

    • Training and experience in human rights law a plus.
    • Training and experience in land law a plus.
    • NGO project management experience a plus.
