    Public Health Lead

    Start Date:   Immediately

Location:      Lagos, Port Harcourt, or Cotonou

(with regular travel between these cities)

    Who We Are:

Justice & Empowerment Initiatives (JEI) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Lagos and Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and Cotonou, Benin. We empower poor and marginalized individuals and communities to lead the changes that they would like to see in their own communities – whether greater access to justice for the poor, pro-poor urban governance and policy, or community-led in-situ upgrading and development. Our work is community driven, community owned, and community sustained. Partner communities identify their needs and set priorities – e.g. addressing violence, strengthening land tenure, or building drainages. These priorities feed into all aspects of our work.

We work hand-in-hand with urban poor social movements and grassroots networks, bringing technical expertise in a variety of professions to inform, strengthen and support community-led efforts to solve justice and development problems. Our ultimate goal is to build the capacity of poor and marginalized individuals to set up sustainable community-level and inter-community structures to support and leverage their efforts and resources to bring about lasting change.

    Job Description:

JEI is looking for a health or public health professional to join our team as the Public Health Lead to coordinate our work around access to health for the urban poor. This position requires an individual with substantial knowledge of health, preferably with public health background, and of teaching health education with a special focus on low literacy, multi-lingual, urban poor populations. The Public Health Lead must be committed to access to health and access to justice for the poor and to supporting grassroots efforts to engage in public dialogue and policy advocacy – especially around access to health care and health services. The Public Health Lead will work with all members of the JEI team, community health advocates, community paralegals, and the broader network of urban poor communities.

    Responsibilities:

    • Train and support community health advocates. This includes teaching public health topics to community health advocate trainees, and supporting them to carry out step-down presentations on health topics in their communities. Public Health Lead will convene regular meetings with community health advocates to discuss new issues, share best practices, and plan for health activities.
    • Develop health accompaniment program. This includes building existing health accompaniment work into a structured program with regular support for community health advocates assisting other vulnerable individuals to navigate the public health system, document barriers encountered, and strategize on how to best overcome them.
    • Coordinate with and assist JEI paralegals and lawyers to render assistance in cases of health rights violations. This includes participating in trainings and collaboratively developing advocacy strategies around improving health access, and supporting efforts to ensure accountability for individual cases of health rights violations.
    • Build partnerships and collaborations with public health authorities and other non-governmental actors. Strengthen connections between urban poor communities and primary health care centers, primary health boards, hospitals, and other civil society partners to increase access and outreach.

    Qualifications:

    • 3-5 years experience working in public heath or related field
    • 2+ years experience working in civil society, building and running programmatic activities, facilitating collaborations across different health stakeholders, and capacity building with partner/beneficiaries is preferred.
    • Bilingual fluency in English and French required.
    • Fluency in local languages a plus (incl. Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Egun, Fon).
    • Must be willing to work at least one Saturday per month.

    Remuneration:

A competitive salary and benefits, commensurate with experience.
