The BBC will be launching a new digital innovation hub in Lagos with the ambition to develop digital journalism in Africa. Your role as Women Affairs Journalist will play a key role in helping our content reach underserved audiences – such as younger, more female and more diverse demographics in Africa.
    • We have an exciting opportunity to create new forms of digital storytelling and journalism that reaches 111 million people in Africa. As a Women Affairs Journalist you will join a new multi-disciplinary digital team in Lagos made up of news gatherers, data journalists, software developers and social media specialists who will be working with journalists working across 12 language services (English, Amharic , Tigrinya, Afaan Oromo, Swahili, Somali, French, Great Lakes , Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa)
    • BBC Africa aims to make, explain and connect African and global stories by providing a unique insight into the main stories of the day in original formats. The African service digital offer consists of websites, mobile sites and Social Media with all services providing multimedia content in text, video, interactive and audio for radio, online, TV, mobile and social media platforms.

    Job Purpose

    • The BBC’s Africa Hub is looking for a creative journalist aware of the emerging and unreported stories about African women. This candidate will have a background creating content that represents and targets African women. As a creative you’re already creating compelling shareable digital content either professionally or in a personal capacity.
    • This candidate must be literate in social media and experienced in content creation for social media, especially Facebook and Instagram.
    • The candidate will play an integral role in brainstorming, creating and executing women’s content. We’re looking for someone who genuinely believes there are many stories about African women to be told who will source, curate and commission content on women’s issues from across Africa.
    • Working with editors, digital TV editors and senior social media journalists from the region and wider BBC the Women Affairs Journalist would be expected to identify, sub and distribute compelling content back to the Africa services and where appropriate to BBC News Online. The journalist will be expected to contribute and occasionally present weekly TV women’s discussion programme.
    • The post holder will report to a Senior Broadcast Journalist for Digital based in Lagos.
    • S/he will be expected to work flexibly as required.

    Main Duties

    • To generate, research, produce and edit multi-media journalistic pieces aimed at BBC Africa’s female audience.
    • To suggest ideas about new ways of engaging the female audience; and to put these ideas into practice.
    • To identify compelling digital and TV content and translate into a form suitable for our multiple platforms
    • To think of creative video/digital treatments for some content
    • To present or report live for across digital platforms , TV and radio by providing up to date with the news agenda in the region and understand how it’s playing out in social spaces.
    • To participate in short- and long-term planning, offer new ideas and to suggest new angles on existing stories and to put forward stories not yet covered.
    • To produce and develop women’s blogging network within the Africa
    • To work across platforms (online, social media, TV etc.) and ensure that the female agenda is covered across all of the Service’s output, in a relevant and engaging manner, in adherence to the BBC’s editorial guidelines
    • To sub and curate content to a high standard
    • To commission bloggers/contributors taking editorial responsibility for content.
    • To work with website & social teams to ensure content is well placed and distributed appropriately
    • To be aware of the distinctive news agenda across the BBC
    • To bring ideas to wider planning and editorial meetings.
    • To join or build dedicated communities around the subject and seed content where appropriate.
    • To ensure that on- and off-site conversation with users is of the highest quality, from technical queries to questions about editorial direction.

    Skills, Knowledge and Experience

    • A successful record in working in an online and social media production environment including demonstrable experience and enthusiasm for social media and interactivity

    About the Team

    • BBC Africa Innovation Hub is a production and development team responsible for creating high impact visual journalism. We’re building an agile, dynamic team to be at the forefront of crafting innovating ways of telling stories digitally for the African mobile audience.
    • The team works with the newly formed television genres programmes, newsgathering, investigations team and language digital services to create data- driven stories, visual storytelling and pilot content that address the data challenges audiences are facing.
    • This team has the remit to explore new innovative use of technologies, with an emphasis on social, mobile and youth audiences.
    • The BBC Africa Innovation Hub aims to generate digital content that meets the BBC high editorial standards and showcase the continent’s best visual journalism.

    About the Role

    • You’ll be leading a team of visual journalists (developers, designers, journalists, visual artists, interactive journalists and women’s affairs journalists based in Lagos).
    • You’re a visionary leader in the field of digital media and looking for a new challenge. We’re looking for an individual who has experience in working with multidisciplinary teams to build digital content and products. It’s highly desirable you come from a journalism background and can demonstrate your interest in journalism and storytelling.

    • To work with the digital editor to fully scope the editorial portfolio for the team

    • The Growth Editor, working on a Regional level at Languages, is vital to the work of the wider editorial teams and Languages overall digital strategy.
    • The successful candidate will improve the way we listen to our audiences, taking analytics several steps deeper to understand the driving forces behind our content’s performance.
    • The role is responsible for the delivery of the following innovations to drive data-led workflows across our digital output:
    • Deep Dives: produce forensic, retrospective investigations into the performance of sections against key metrics including reach, engagement, on-and-offsite social activity and efforts to engage women. The conversion of complex data into user-friendly visuals and recommendations on changes to editorial, workflow and optimization, backed up with consultancy to support the transition.

    • To work with West Africa Planning Senior Broadcast Journalist, to achieve the most effective deployment, and commission the best content for all platforms.

    Context
    The BBC World Service is embarking on an exciting journey with unprecedented investment in digital content for Africa and your role will be critical to us in meeting our ambitions. The BBC will be launching a new digital innovation hub in Lagos with the ambition to develop digital journalism in Africa. Your role as Interactive Journalist will play a key role in helping our content reach under-served audiences - such as younger, more female and more diverse demographics in Africa.
    We have an exciting opportunity to create new forms of digital storytelling and journalism that reaches 111 million people in Africa. As an Interactive Journalist you will join a new multi-disciplinary digital team in Lagos made up of news gatherers, designers, software developers and social media specialists who will be working with journalists working across 12 language services (English, Amharic , Tigrinya, Afaan Oromo, Swahili, Somali, French, Great Lakes , Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa)

    BBC Africa aims to make, explain and connect African and global stories by providing a unique insight into the main stories of the day in original formats. The African service digital offer consists of websites, mobile sites and Social Media with all services providing multimedia content in text, video, interactive and audio for radio, online, TV, mobile and social media platforms.

    The successful candidate will work as part of the new Visual Journalism team within the Africa Hub to generate fresh and original global stories.

    This role has close links to the Visual Journalism team, whose aim is to unlock the potential of multimedia storytelling across platforms - desktop, tablet, mobile and TV. Using graphical tools and combining those with an understanding of data and journalistic rigour, the team aims to produce powerful visual explanations that improve understanding of the news, and which audiences across the world highly appreciate.

    The team brings together online journalists, graphic designers and developers with TV designers and craft editors, all serving UK and Global audiences, including those of WS Languages.

    Job Purpose

    • An experienced interactive journalist is needed to join the new Visual Journalism team for the Africa Hub, which will also be integrated by a designer and a developer.
    • You will be a proactive self-starter, brimming with original ideas on how to best apply interactive journalism.
    • You will be eager to find ways to compliment news stories, when appropriate, or to identify original stories that can be carried by all outlets.
    • You will be able to delve beneath the headlines and then confidently and succinctly explain the fuller picture to our audience as well as other colleagues from BBC News.
    • You will be excited about developing the way that data is interpreted and presented online on platforms from mobile to TV.
    • You will be focused on creating content that will engage our global audience, providing them with useful, and where possible, personalised information.
    • You will be working closely and productively with journalists, developers and designers - producing some of the most innovative content on the World Service Group websites.

    • To collaborate with reporters, editors, and the fellow team's designer and developer to bring those stories to publication

    Required knowledge, Skills and Experience
    Journalism:

    • Journalism experience - either online / radio / TV - ability to spot a story and make sound editorial judgements
    • Ability to write in outstanding English as well as at least one of the key Africa Hub’s languages well enough to write stories / backgrounders as required
    • Be able to write /create content for social media - awareness of different platforms - and what is relevant for each region

    Data:

    • Numerate - ability to understand spreadsheets and create them in Excel and Google Drive for stories / data sharing
    • Knowledge of data sources and FOI procedure, if relevant, as it pertains to your region
    • A strong grasp of how to clean and query data
    • A good understanding of statistics and statistical analysis

    Production:

    • Be able to use basic design software (like Photoshop) to make composite images as well as create and update and create basic templates for static content for social media – whichever platforms are most relevant
    • Good visual awareness and web production experience
    • Experience of visualising data and using visualisation tools

    Also desirable knowledge, skills and experience:
