    Linguistics Coordinator

    Job Description

    • Responsible for managing the SIL Nigeria Linguistics Department, and monitoring and coordinating linguistic-related activities within language development and Bible translation programmes in Nigerian languages, including training, consultant development, quality control, and proper use of equipment, and finances.

    Job Responsibilities: 

    Takes primary responsibility for managing the Linguistics Department, including:

    • Oversight of supervisory staff, training in linguistics, linguistics consultant development, quality control, equipment, and finances○ managing the work and supervising the personnel, considering both external requirements and internal priorities ○ anticipating, planning, assigning tasks ○ ensuring standard operating procedures are in place as needed and appropriate follow-up and accountability occur
    • Develops the domain budget and monitors its implementation
    • Anticipates and identifies needs for staff recruitment and training and makes plans to meet them
    • Assesses and puts processes in place to meet the unique needs of remote staff
    • Builds a team culture where team members help each other grow in competency and character
    • Proactively and intentionally connects and collaborates with the leaders of other domains within SIL Nigeria to ensure compliance with best practices in language programs
    • Stays abreast of developments in the fields of linguistics and Bible translation
    • Ensures relationships with linguists in other Nigerian organisations and other SIL Community Organisations are maintained, providing connection between them and the SIL Nigeria Linguistics Department
    • Ensures linguistics findings are appropriately documented and archived
    • Effectively communicates management expectations to staff and communicates staff perspectives, concerns, and ideas to management
    • Advocates for the importance of good linguistics foundations for language development and Bible translation work.

    Linguistics Supervisor

    Job Description

    • Responsible for supervising four to seven members of the linguistics department.
    • This includes planning, monitoring, and evaluation of individual work as well as collaborating with mentors and consultants to ensure training, consultant development as applicable, and quality control.
    • Commitment to growing in linguistic knowledge and skills.
    • Ensures proper use of equipment and finances.

    Mother Tongue Engagement Director

    Job Description

    • Responsible for overseeing six mother tongue engagement teams within SIL Nigeria: i) Language Assessment & Survey, ii) Scripture Use, iii) Literacy & Education, iv) Language Technology and Typesetting, and Vernacular Media Services. Coordinates the services of these teams with language program management and translation services for language development and Bible translation programs in Nigerian languages. Ensures effective supervision, training, consultant development, quality control, and the proper use of equipment and finances within these domains.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Takes primary responsibility for leading five of the eight SIL Nigeria language service teams: i) Language Assessment & Survey, ii) Scripture Use, iii) Literacy & Education, iv) Language Technology and Typesetting, v) Vernacular Media Services, and vi) EthnoArts
    • Collaborates with the Translation Director who leads Translation, Linguistics, and Oral Bible Storying teams to ensure that all the teams work together to provide symbiotic services for projects
    • Manages the work and supervises the coordinators considering both external requirements and internal priorities; anticipates, plans, assigns tasks, ensures standard operating procedures are in place as needed, and appropriate follow-up and accountability occur
    • Supervises budget managers as they develop budgets and monitors implementation
    • Anticipates and identifies needs for staff recruitment and training and makes plans to meet them
    • Builds a team culture where team members help each other grow in competency and character
    • Maintains relationships with leaders in other Nigerian organisations and other SIL Community Organisations
    • Ensures teams document and archive their work
    • Effectively communicates management expectations to staff and communicates staff perspectives, concerns, and ideas to management

    Translation Advisor

    Job Description

    • Participates in project planning. Guides and encourages the translation team.
    • Provides technical help on translation-related issues.
    • Trains on translation principles.
    • Mentors mother tongue translation workers. Authors, co-authors, or facilitates the writing of technical papers.

    Job Responsibilities: 

    • Review and utilize any relevant previous studies or research.
    • Work with the team to gather and analyze language data.
    • Assist with the development of a written form for the language.
    • Assist with the discovery and documentation of discourse features of the language.
    • Assist with documentation of relational terms and habits of the people.
    • Assist with documentation of beliefs underlying the habits of the people.
    • Write or facilitate the writing of technical papers.
    • Assist Facilitator in translation program planning and monitoring.
    • Train workers in exegetical and translation principles.
    • Guide the team in exegetical preparation.
    • Assist with the translation process.
    • Guide the team in testing the translation with speakers of the language.
    • Participate in the review of translations.
