    Digital Senior Research Officer (Nigeria)

    Job Purpose

    • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Digital Senior Research Officer to support the timely and efficient implementation of all aspects of research for a BBC Media Action reproductive health project in northern Nigeria.
    • Working closely with the Research and Data Manager, the Digital Senior Research Officer will conduct research aimed at understanding digital audiences and advancing understanding and management of digital metrics, as well as the measurement of the impact of digital outputs on the project.
    • The role will report to the Research and Data Manager and work closely with the Head of Research and Learning.
    • The position is based in Abuja and will require travel to other states within the country.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Work closely with other project digital /social media partner(s) to use social listening and track social media analytics to understand reach and engagement of project outputs. This will include working with the social media agency to use AI to identify proxies for indicators to track digitally.
    • Pre-test and user test digital products including conducting AB testing of social media output; testing Mobile phone IVR output with audience segments; and tracking mobile data 
    • Undertake, and support the project to design and undertake social media /digital research and analysis that will help to understand audiences’ uptake of project outputs, to support continuous development and dissemination of media and communication products.
    • Support the design, development, and implementation of an improved system of data analytics, segmentation, and visualisation using existing social media data and other digital data collected on the project.
    • Support and mentor other research and project team members to use such systems of data analytics set up.
    • Conduct analysis of social media/digital data sets and communicate insights of such datasets in a simple and intuitive format for all stakeholders, supporting interpretation and utilisation of the findings, working in partnership with project teams to deliver such analysis.
    • Support the team to design and conduct innovative digital research to inform and understand the impact of digital outputs.
    • Communicate complex technical ideas using non-technical language to a wide range of audiences from community/grassroot activity partners, media partners, production staff/creative teams and development practitioners.
    • Work closely with the Research and Data Manager and other relevant teams to ensure that all research activities are designed with safeguarding in mind, and that research design web analytics) and using these to provide useful insights to project delivery/production teams.

    Requirements

    • Minimum of a First Degree in the Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, the Humanities or any other relevant field.
    • Strong experience of supporting others in data analysis.
    • Ability to speak and write one or more of the following Nigerian languages: Hausa, Yoruba and / or Igbo.
    • documents and tools reflect this. Participate in relevant mandatory training on Safeguarding and Respect at Work and implement these within all aspects of work.

    Required skills, knowledge and experience:

    • The Digital Senior Research Officer will have experience conducting digital research and using AI to analyse digital data effectively.
    • Good knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research techniques (gained ideally through experience of digital and social research across different populations and contexts and across any of media, governance, health and resilience sectors), making sure they are fit for purpose and of value.
    • Understanding of or experience of working with AI, machine learning and chat bots.
    • Strong skills in analysis, visualisation and interpretation of data. Skills in some or all of the following are a great benefit: statistical modelling tools (e.g. SPSS, R, Python, STATA), data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and/or social listening tools (e.g., Brandwatch, Meltwater, CrowdTangle/Meta Content Library).
    • Skills and experience in using digital research approaches to monitor and evaluate the impact of social media or digital media interventions.
    • Excellent skills in communicating complex data and insights to a range of stakeholders (including non-researchers and those whose first language is not English) in non-technical, creative and engaging ways – translating theoretical research into practical applications.
    • Strong digital research experience, including conducting research to understand digital media usage, analysing social media data (such as social listening, sentiment analysis, and/or network analysis), and reporting on/visualising social media metrics and working with others to interpret them.
    • Experience monitoring trends in digital media usage, particularly among youth audiences.
    • Existing knowledge of emerging digital media usage trends in markets where BBC Media Action works desirable.
    • Experience and understanding of applying and training others to use social media analytics and social listening tools (e.g., Brandwatch, Meltwater, CrowdTangle/Meta Content Library.

    Project Director

    Job Purpose

    • The BBC MA office in Nigeria is seeking a Project Director to lead an extensive, multi-year, multi-component Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) programme funded by the Gates Foundation and focused on reproductive health and family planning (FP) in Northern Nigeria.
    • The Project Director is the most senior role, leading this high-profile project with a significant budget.
    • The Project Director will be accountable for delivering the project to a high standard, on time, and in alignment with the expectations of BBC MA and the Gates Foundation (GF).
    • The Project Director will be responsible for maintaining oversight of the project’s activities, leading a team, liaising with media, civil society, and government partners, providing strategic and technical guidance to specialist and project teams, and ensuring that all creative outputs are produced to the highest standards.
    • To summarise, the Project Director will be accountable for delivering the project to high quality, meeting planned outcomes, within budget and to the timeline.
    • The role reports to the Country Director and will work closely with other implementing teams and the Senior Management Team.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Accountable for the effective and high-quality design, delivery, management and monitoring of a multi-media, multi-platform, multi-partner SBCC intervention and disseminating the learnings thereof.
    • Provide dynamic, inspirational leadership and management, including sound technical and staff leadership across all aspects of the intervention.
    • Lead project activities – working closely with your team, other teams within BBC MA and relevant external stakeholders to deliver the project and donor commitments while aligning with BBC editorial standards and values and BBC Media Action’s best practice.
    • Manage project budgets (including budget forecasting) to ensure the complete and successful delivery of project outputs in accordance with that budget and in line with BBC MA’s financial procedures and the funder’s operating guidelines. Work closely with the Finance department to identify and resolve any potential financial issues.
    • Recruit, manage and develop the project team, ensuring that staff are appropriately inducted, trained and developed, and performance is appropriately managed.
    • Engage with Creative, Production and Research and Learning (both in Nigeria and London) teams to strategize, brainstorm and review all project outputs (both internal and co-created or commissioned to external partners) in line with the agreed Theory of Change and Communication Framework.
    • Envision and implement strategic ideas and tactics in line with the project – not just in implementation, but in forging partnerships and harnessing the power of the vibrant Nigerian creative and media ecosystem.
    • Anticipate and respond to risks and threats that could threaten project delivery.
    • Lead the dissemination of project results and oversee the publication of reports.
    • Serve as the organisation’s primary contact with the donor and other project stakeholders.
    • Manage the project’s Steering Committee comprising, internal and external senior stakeholders.
    • Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with partners and organisations (including other GF grantees, the creative and media industry, and FP stakeholders) for the benefit of the project, in line with BBC Media Action’s values.
    • Ensure the development of knowledge management systems and processes that help collect, organise, store, and share BBC MA Nigeria’s knowledge assets in a manner that makes them readily available, accessible, and effectively used for the benefit of the organisation and the sector.
    • Contribute to the development and writing of new proposals, or work as part of a larger team responding to donor requirements.
    • Ensure that project activities comply with BBC MA and GF standards around safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
    • The role will support processes that ensure relevant safeguarding due diligence is conducted with any local partner organisations that may work with vulnerable adults or children as part of the project. Where any risks are identified, will ensure that the risks are mitigated.
    • Any other tasks assigned by BBC MA to achieve project and organisational objectives.

    Required skills, knowledge, and experience

    • Substantial experience of managing progressively large-scale and complex projects in the development and/or humanitarian sector, with direct experience managing large, diverse teams and significant budgets, including client relationship management with major funders.
    • Experience working in both media and development sectors to bring about change through the power of media and communications.
    • Deep familiarity and experience working with the commercial sector of the Nigerian media and communication industry – advertising, digital media (social media and telecom), media planning and buying, outreach and activation.
    • Networked into the Nigerian media industry to tap into this world to consult, use and leverage talent for the project in the most impactful and cost-effective manner.
    • Up-to-date with trends and trendsetters, innovations, and constant changes in Nigeria’s media and popular culture scene.
    • Strong understanding of SBCC tools and techniques, ideally gained from experience of designing and/or delivering large-scale SBCC interventions.
    • Sound financial knowledge, including forecasting.
    • Knowledge of Hausa language.
    • Understanding of the religious sensitivities and the socio-economic, political and cultural context of Northern Nigeria.
    • An understanding of reproductive and family planning projects and stakeholders in Nigeria is desirable.
    • Proven expertise to build, influence and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders outside of a line management relationship.
    • Experienced in controlling programme activity and providing decision support to allow prioritisation based on strategic contribution and use of resources (people, funds, time, etc.).
    • Foresight to anticipate risks and the executive ability to manage them.
    • Confident public speaker with experience presenting to colleagues, donors and stakeholders.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

    Research and Data Manager

    Job Purpose

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Accountable for the delivery of a range of research activities that will be implemented under the project, including acting as the main contact point to the donor on all research-related requests and deliverables.
    • Seek technical research assistance from the Cross Country team where required to support delivery and communication of research.
    • Lead on engaging with project partners and agencies to design, coordinate collection of data and analysis to generate data on reach and effective reach of project outputs and activities, including designing and managing weekly face to face sentiment interviews in each project focal state with the procured agency and carrying out pre-testing.
    • Manage and analyse quantitative and qualitative data across projects states to produce insights to support project strategy, enabling evidence-based decision-making for content and outreach activity design, production and broadcast/implementation.
    • Work with the data engineer to generate learning quarterly from the monitoring data to share with Gates Foundation and partners. This will also include conducting specific analysis e.g. how a specific campaign is faring or understanding a specific audience segment in more detail among other data utilisation needs.
    • Coordinate quarterly data/learning reviews with Gates Foundation and partners that helps to continuously apply insights and learnings to project design, implementation and strategic decision making.
    • Build relationships with key partners for this project (including project teams, other implementing partners and stakeholders, evaluation partner and Gates Foundation), and lead on day-to-day coordination and liaison.
    • Plan and monitor resource needs that supports effective research design, implementation and uptake on the project.
    • Communicate complex research clearly to diverse audiences, including the Gates Foundation leadership, non-research staff, donors, and media partners. This includes preparing and presenting research presentations and insights that inform the production process, partner outreach activities, and feedback to Gates Foundation.
    • Introduce new and innovative ways to design, deliver and report on research, and support teams/partners to take up research insights.
    • Perform any other duties that may be assigned.

    Required skills, knowledge and experience

    • Minimum of a First Degree in the Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, the Humanities or any other relevant field
    • Previous research experience working with NGOs or development projects would be an advantage.
    • The Research and Data Manager will be an experienced researcher with demonstrable research design, implementation, data management, analysis and partner coordination skills.
    • Evidence of experience conducting research and evaluation for development projects or similar experience in conducting social/market research in any research agency and/or media and communication research.
    • Good knowledge of family planning, especially for the northern Nigeria context.
    • Experience in multi-partner coordination and liaison with ability to provide effective leadership that contributes to project success.
    • Proven experience evaluating social impact interventions using a range of methods, adapting to challenging contexts.
    • Ability to plan, design and manage mixed method research.
    • Competent in qualitative and quantitative research implementation, data analysis and reporting.
    • Knowledge and skills in social media/digital research design and evaluation is desirable.
    • Strong fieldwork experience, including in rural and geographically challenging areas.
    • Ability to undertake or manage fieldwork and adapt methods to challenging and resource-constrained conditions.
    • Good communication skills, and the ability to clearly communicate the findings of our research and what these insights mean for the users of our data.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of and application of ethical procedures in research.
    • Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity and cross-cultural research within Nigeria.
    • A good grasp of, or enthusiasm to learn about, communication strategies and development issues.

    Data Engineer

    Job Purpose

    • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Data Engineer to lead the design and initial implementation of a database that brings together monitoring data across two projects.
    • This position is required to build a consolidated real-time data management dashboard system for the Changing the Script project.
    • This six-month full-time position will involve setting up the system.
    • Subsequent part-time work is then required after the initial six months.
    • We are seeking a skilled data engineer to design and implement a unified database system. The role focuses on building a robust, well-structured database with clear labelling, standardised schemas, and accurate metadata to enable reliable reporting, analytics, and insight generation.
    • The position requires expertise in ETL pipelines, near real-time data handling, large-scale data processing, and social listening workflows.
    • The role will report to the Head of Research and Learning, Nigeria and have a dotted line to the Project Director, being accountable to all deliveries to the Project Director.
    • They will work closely with the Research and Data manager who is leading the research, partner organisations and will collaborate with the technical support cross country team (digital, research) and broader BBC specialisms to ensure the database meets operational and reporting needs.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Design, build, and maintain central databases/data warehouses using PostgreSQL or Azure SQL, optimised for indexing, querying, and scalability.
    • Develop and manage ETL pipelines using Python to ingest, clean, transform, and harmonise data from surveys, outreach, digital analytics, social listening, and partner submissions.
    • Process near real-time and large-scale datasets efficiently, ensuring data integrity and performance.
    • Build and maintain well-labelled and standardised schemas with clear metadata to support reporting, analytics, and downstream dashboards.
    • Handle text-heavy social listening data, including cleaning, deduplication, sentiment scoring, and calculation of social media metrics.
    • Prepare datasets for Power BI with star-schema models, transformations, and
    • calculated measures, supporting dashboards while maintaining a primary focus on database architecture.
    • Ensure data quality, governance, and security, including role-based access, logging,
    • GDPR compliance, and documentation.
    • Collaborate with London teams, and partner organisations to standardise data submission and ensure usability.

    Required skills, knowledge, and experience

    Purpose of the role

    • You will be part of the BBC Yoruba service team in charge of content coming from the outstation in Ibadan Oyo state.
    • You will be responsible for providing adequate news coverage for the entire South-West region.
    • You will also advise on the most suitable content coming from Ibadan and its environs and will brief the editor and Senior Journalists on the same. 

    Job Summary

    • As a reporter, you will be responsible for originating and producing stories which may include scripting, editing, outputting, filming and presenting content across a range of BBC output or generating exciting ideas and original newsgathering. 

    Responsibilities
    Day to day duties will include: 

    • Propose; research; write; report and edit interesting and well-explained reports and more thoughtful, analytical pieces for publication – meeting high journalistic standards and fully observing the BBC editorial guidelines. 
    • Alert editors to breaking news and be ready to file and present accurate, on-the-spot reports and analysis. 
    • Develop and use all formats and platforms available to tell the story in the most appropriate way, with a particular focus on digital platforms to deliver our journalism to audiences. 
    • To gather material for Yoruba service's digital platforms on news topics and events which is reflective of the audiences we serve. 
    • To provide timely, specialist and self-assured news coverage and analysis of news and events of interest to the audiences of the BBC. 
    • Maintain regular and clear communication with the Senior Journalists and Editor ensuring everyone is always briefed on own movements throughout the assignment. 
    • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards. 

    Your Skills and Experience
    Essential Criteria

    • Exceptional Editorial Judgment – Proven ability to deliver complex stories and investigations, ensuring accuracy, impartiality, and audience relevance across platforms. 
    • Excellent understanding and comprehensive knowledge of Oyo state and southwest Nigeria as well. 
    • Creative and Tenacious – A track record of generating original, high-quality journalism with the creativity and determination to see stories through from concept to completion. 
    • Experience of live broadcasting with good on-screen presence, self-assured microphone voice and ability to communicate effectively to target audience. 
    • Willingness to travel and in particular to High-Risk environments. 
    • The ability to work flexible hours when required including on weekends if necessary.
