    Wakilan Sauyi Facilitator (Community Volunteer)

    Role Overview

    • The Wakilan Sauyi Facilitator is a community-based volunteer responsible for facilitating theWakilan Sauyi couples’ curriculum a weekly gender-transformative program that engages married couples in dialogues to address harmful gender norms, intimate partner violence, and barriers to women’s economic empowerment.
    • The facilitator works directly with VSLA member couples to promote shared decision-making, equitable household relationships, and mutual support for women’s participation in income-generating activities.

    Key Responsibilities
    Facilitation of Wakilan Sauyi Sessions:

    • Facilitate weekly Wakilan Sauyi dialogue sessions for enrolled couples following the approved curriculum and session guides.
    • Create a safe, confidential, and respectful environment where both spouses can openly discuss gender roles, power dynamics, household decision-making, and conflict resolution.
    • Use participatory methods (role plays, case studies, group discussions, reflective exercises) to engage couples actively and encourage peer learning.
    • Ensure that sessions are inclusive of couples from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities and different literacy levels.

    Participant Engagement and Retention:

    • Identify and enroll eligible couples (VSLA members and their spouses) in collaboration with the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant and VSLA group leaders.
    • Maintain regular attendance records, follow up with absent participants, and support retention throughout the week cycle.
    • Report any concerns or barriers to participation (e.g., scheduling conflicts, childcare, mobility issues) in coordination with the project team.

    Monitoring and Documentation:

    • Complete session observation checklists, attendance sheets, and brief session summary reports after each weekly session.
    • Document notable changes in couple dynamics, attitude shifts, or behavioral outcomes (positive or challenging) and share with the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant.
    • Identify couples who may need additional support (e.g., GBV concerns, severe household conflict) and refer them appropriately through established referral pathways.

    Community Engagement and Sensitization:

    • Participate in community awareness sessions to explain the purpose and benefits of the Wakilan Sauyi program to community members, traditional leaders, and religious leaders.
    • Act as a role model and advocate for gender equality, respectful relationships, and shared household responsibilities within the community.
    • Support the organization of community activism events at the end of the 21-week cycle where graduating couples share their experiences with other community members.

    Coordination and Reporting:

    • Attend monthly facilitator coordination meetings led by the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant.
    • Submit weekly activity reports and attendance records to the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant.
    • Report any safeguarding or protection concerns immediately following organizational protocols.

    Qualifications and Experience
    Education and Literacy:

    • Minimum of secondary school education (SSCE) or equivalent.
    • Ability to read, write, and keep simple records in English and/or Hausa.

    Experience:

    • Previous experience as a community volunteer, peer educator, or facilitator (preferred but not required).
    • Experience participating in VSLA, gender dialogue, or couples’ programs is an advantage.

    Skills and Competencies:

    • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to listen actively and maintain confidentiality.
    • Respectful and non-judgmental attitude towards all participants.
    • Basic record-keeping and reporting skills.
    • Willingness to learn and apply gender-transformative facilitation methods.
    • Ability to work with both men and women in a culturally appropriate manner.

    Language:

    • Fluency in Hausa (spoken and written) is required.
    • Basic English is an advantage.
    • Knowledge of Kanuri or other local languages is a plus.

    Key Working Relationships:

    • Internal: Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant, Economic Recovery and Gender Inclusion Officer, SAA Facilitators, MEAL staff, VSLA group leaders.
    • External: Community members, traditional leaders, religious leaders, couples participating in the program.

    Time Commitment and Remuneration

    • Commitment: Approximately 30–35 minutes weekly facilitation session, plus preparation, reporting, and meetings).
    • Duration: Up to 12 months (renewable based on performance and project need).
    • Remuneration: This is a volunteer position with a modest honorarium/stipend for each facilitated session, transportation allowance for meetings, and recognition as a community volunteer.
