Swimming Coach / Lifeguard at Rugby School Nigeria

JOB PURPOSE

• The Swimming coach and lifeguard is responsible for delivering high-quality swimming lessons and coaching to students while ensuring the safety and supervision of all pool users. The role supports the Physical Education department in promoting aquatic skills, water safety, and overall student wellbeing. The position also assists with the organisation of school aquatic activities and general PE programmes to create a safe, engaging, and positive sporting environment for students and staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Plan and deliver swimming lessons and coaching sessions for students of varying ages and abilities
• Promote water safety, confidence, and correct swimming techniques
• Prepare lesson plans that support the school’s Physical Education curriculum
• Assess and monitor student progress in swimming skills and water confidence
• Assist with the development of school swim teams, competitions, and aquatic events where required
• Provide active lifeguard supervision during all swimming activities
• Ensure all pool users follow safety rules and safe swimming practices
• Respond promptly and effectively to any poolside incidents or emergencies
• Maintain a safe and well organised poolside environment during lessons and activities
• Set up and prepare pool facilities and equipment for lessons and aquatic activities
• Support the wider Physical Education department with PE lessons, sports activities, and school events where required
• Communicate effectively with staff and students to encourage participation and positive behaviour
• Report any safety concerns, incidents, or facility issues to the appropriate staff members

Appraisal and professional development

• Participate in arrangements for professional development.
• Undertake such training as may be reasonably required by the School to adapt to the changing requirements of the School or as may be necessary to fulfil the School’s statutory or regulatory obligations.
• To undertake mandated job-related training as required and instructed by the School.

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR certification
• Ensure all swimming activities follow school safety procedures and safeguarding policies
• Monitor the pool environment to ensure safe use by all participants
• Follow all workplace health and safety procedures
• Respond promptly and appropriately to aquatic emergencies
• Ensure compliance with school safety policies and local regulations

• Fulfil wider professional responsibilities by making a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the School.
• Child protection, discipline, health and safety
• Safeguard and promote the welfare of all the children and young people at Rugby School Nigeria.
