Livestock Officer (Konduga LGA) at Damnaish Human Capacity Building Initiative (DHCBI)

Job Summary

The Livestock Officer will play a key role in implementing DHCBI’s livestock support interventions, with a focus on sustainable livestock management, animal health, and improved livelihoods. The officer will oversee livestock-related activities, provide technical support to beneficiaries, and ensure quality standards in all areas of the program. This position involves extensive community engagement, training, capacity building, and collaboration with local government and veterinary services.

Key Responsibilities

Program Implementation

• Support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of livestock activities, including restocking, feed distribution, and provision of veterinary inputs.
• Ensure timely and quality delivery of livestock support services in line with project plans and donor requirements.

Beneficiary Training and Capacity Building

• Conduct regular training on animal husbandry, livestock disease prevention, nutrition, and climate-resilient feeding techniques.
• Deliver culturally relevant training, tailored to the needs and practices of target communities.

Hydroponic Fodder Production

• Introduce hydroponic techniques for sustainable fodder production.
• Lead practical training sessions on setting up and managing hydroponic systems for livestock feed.
• Monitor adoption and effectiveness of hydroponic practices among beneficiaries.

Technical Support

• Provide ongoing guidance to beneficiaries on animal care, disease prevention, vaccination, and productivity enhancement.
• Identify and address livestock-related challenges in the field through regular visits and consultations.

Community Engagement

• Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, leaders, and local institutions.
• Promote sustainable livestock management and animal welfare practices at the community level.

Monitoring and Evaluation

• Track animal health and productivity outcomes.
• Ensure systematic data collection, documentation, and reporting of all livestock and hydroponic activities.
• Work with the M&E team to evaluate program performance and impact.

Collaboration and Coordination

• Coordinate with local veterinary services for animal health interventions, including vaccination and treatment.
• Collaborate with the FSL team to ensure an integrated approach to livelihoods and food security.
• Participate in livestock-related coordination platforms and sector working groups.

Compliance, Safeguarding, and Representation

• Ensure adherence to DHCBI’s policies, WFP standards, and national livestock and veterinary regulations.
• Represent DHCBI in community meetings, sector coordination, and external forums related to livestock support.
• Promote the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) within project activities and communities.
• Foster a culture of compliance, ethics, and humanitarian accountability.

• Promote gender-equitable access to training, resources, and opportunities.
• Ensure that livestock programming is inclusive and responsive to the specific needs of women, men, youth, and persons with disabilities.
• Create a respectful and inclusive work environment that values diversity and protects the dignity of all individuals.

Requirements

Education:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, or a related field.

Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in livestock management, animal husbandry, or related fields in humanitarian or development settings.
• Previous experience working in remote or conflict-affected areas is a strong asset.

Skills:

• Strong technical expertise in livestock health, disease management, nutrition, and hydroponic systems.
• Excellent facilitation, training, and community engagement skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse cultural contexts.

Additional Requirements:

• Familiarity with WFP/FAO or other donor-funded livestock programs is an advantage.
• Proficiency in English and local languages (e.g., Hausa, Kanuri) is preferred.
• Willingness to work in challenging field environments.
