    Environmental & Social Governance Manager

    The Role

    • The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Manager is responsible for developing and overseeing environmental, social, and corporate governance policies and procedures, as well as reviewing and appraising Babban Gona’s operational standards to ensure that they are socially and environmentally sustainable and comply with internationally recognized best practices.
    • The Manager will work with internal and external stakeholders to implement Babban Gona’s Environmental and Social Management Plan, define steps necessary to address compliance gaps where they arise, identify opportunities to add value proactively, and contribute to long-term developmental impact and sustainability of Babban Gona’s operations with a particular focus on sustainable agricultural practices.
    • The ESG Manager will formulate recommendations and requirements business units and incorporate these into applicable internal documentation to facilitate implementation. The role is responsible for monitoring the environmental, social and governance performance of business units within Babban Gona.
    • The Environmental, Social and Governance Manager reports to the Head, Partnerships and will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to help Babban Gona achieve its ESG goals.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Identify all key potential social and environmental impacts and risks within Babban Gona’s operations, communicate same to the relevant stakeholders, and support the development and implementation of processes to mitigate the risks identified.
    • Work with the HR and Field Operations  team to ensure that disputes related to Babban Gona’s activities affecting host communities are promptly addressed and adequate grievance mechanisms are put in place to resolve issues and compensate affected parties.
    • Facilitate the design of processes to receive complaints, track and monitor the resolution of such complaints and disputes between Babban Gona and host communities.
    • Work with external stakeholders to mobilize technical and financial support to enhance the environmental and social sustainability of Babban Gona’s operations.
    • Manage and oversee the implementation of Babban Gona’s Environmental and Social Management Plan, including the Environmental and Social Performance Standards in the International Finance Corporation’s (“IFC”) that are most relevant to Babban Gona.
    • Continuous review and development of appropriate programmes and policies that will govern the management of social, environmental, health and safety risks.
    • Provide technical expertise on key issues related to environmental and social impact assessment and on sustainability risks in the design, preparation, implementation, and supervision of Babban Gona’s operations taking into consideration best industry practices and standards.
    • Working with Learning and Development to ensure that internal stakeholders understand the applicable ESG policies, guidelines, and requirements, and have the necessary knowledge to manage social and environmental impacts and/or risks adequately and are supported by mechanisms that facilitate implementation.
    • Conduct consultations with stakeholders in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines and be responsible for reporting on such.
    • Prepare the Babban Gona's annual Environmental and Social Performance Reports to be disseminated to relevant stakeholders.
    • Report on and disseminate good practices and general knowledge.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, and other related courses.
    • 4 - 5 years of relevant experience in working with private sector firms (logistics, agribusiness, and / or manufacturing) to identify environmental/social risk and issues and develop mitigation measures to ensure compliance with good international industry practice.
    • Exposure to African and global development institutions and their operational practice will be a desired attribute.
    • Oral and written professional proficiency in English

    • A genuine interest in and understanding of environmental issues and relevant legislation.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
