Background
CENSCOPE seeks to engage a qualified consultant to design and deliver a structured Life Skills Training program for targeted adolescents, youth, and other vulnerable groups. This initiative is a critical component of the NHF reserved allocation project titled "Integrated Life-Saving Nutrition and Protection Assistance for Conflict-Affected Populations in Kaga, Konduga, and Ngala LGAs, Borno State." The primary objective of this intervention is to strengthen participants' psychosocial well-being, resilience, decision-making capacities, and overall socio-economic readiness within these highly volatile, conflict-affected communities.
The training is designed to directly respond to critical, identified needs among adolescents living in vulnerable contexts, specifically focusing on building self-awareness, personal protection, emotional well-being, interpersonal communication, and future readiness. To achieve sustainable impact, the selected consultant will be required to design and implement a structured, participatory, and child-centered curriculum to be delivered over a comprehensive 12-week training cycle in Kaga LGA, Borno State.
Purpose of the Assignment
The purpose of this consultancy is to design, adapt, and directly facilitate the delivery of a 12-session life-skills curriculum using participatory, age-appropriate methodologies for adolescents aged 10–17 years.
The consultant will deliver the life-skills training to approximately 100-150 adolescents (boys and girls) across the following locations in Kaga LGA: Beneshiekh and Ngamdu. Target includes 12% inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Objectives
The specific objectives of the assignment are to:
- Develop a structured 12-session life-skills curriculum for adolescents (10–17 years).
- Ensure age-appropriate content for two cohorts: 10–13 and 14–17 years.
- Integrate participatory and child-centered methodologies into session design.
- Strengthen thematic areas including:
- Self-awareness and identity
- Personal safety and protection
- Decision-making and critical thinking
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Emotional regulation and stress management
- Goal setting and future planning
- Facilitate the direct delivery of life-skills sessions to adolescent groups using participatory and child-centered approaches.
- Establish referral pathways for children requiring MHPSS or case management support.
Scope of Work
The consultant will:
- Conduct a rapid review of existing life-skills and adolescent programming materials.
- Develop a 12-session curriculum package, including:
- Facilitator guides
- Session plans
- Activity toolkits
- Monitoring and reflection tools
- Adapt content for two age groups (10–13 and 14–17).
- Ensure gender sensitivity and inclusion principles are embedded.
- Incorporate participatory methodologies such as role play, storytelling, group work, and creative exercises.
- Directly facilitate weekly life-skills sessions for adolescent groups across implementation locations.
- Apply participatory and child-friendly facilitation methodologies throughout delivery.
- Coordinate with program staff and safeguarding focal persons during implementation.
- 1Develop referral guidance for children identified with protection or psychosocial needs.
Expected Deliverables
The consultant is expected to produce the following:
- Inception report and workplan
- Draft life-skills curriculum (12 sessions)
- Finalized facilitator guide and session materials
- Age-differentiated learning adaptations (10–13 and 14–17)
- Referral pathway and safeguarding guidance note
- Facilitation and delivery of life-skills sessions across targeted groups
- End-of-assignment report with recommendations, including pre- and post-training assessment results measuring changes in participant knowledge and skills.
Duration and Location
- The consultancy is expected to last for 6-8 weeks
- Location: Kaga LGA (Benesheikh and Ngamdu)
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal consultant should have:
- B.Sc. in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Child Protection, Development Studies, or related field
- Proven experience in adolescent programming and life-skills curriculum development
- Experience working in humanitarian or conflict-affected settings
- Strong understanding of child safeguarding and protection principles
- Experience in participatory and child-friendly facilitation methodologies
- Knowledge of MHPSS frameworks is an added advantage
- Excellent communication and training skills
Reporting Arrangements
The consultant will report to the Project Coordinator and will work closely with:
- CFS Facilitators for session logistics and participant mobilization
- MHPSS Officer for referral of children with psychosocial needs
- Case Management Supervisor for referral of children with protection concerns
- MEAL Manager for monitoring and evaluation of training outcomes
Ethical Considerations
The consultant must strictly adhere to the following:
- Child Safeguarding: The consultant shall sign and comply with CENSCOPE's Child Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct. Any suspicion or allegation of child abuse must be reported to the Safeguarding Focal Person within 24 hours.
- PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse): The consultant shall not engage in any form of sexual exploitation or abuse. A signed PSEA declaration is required before contract commencement.
- Confidentiality: All participant information, especially protection concerns, shall be treated as strictly confidential and shared only on a need-to-know basis.
- Do No Harm: All activities shall be conducted in a manner that prioritizes participant safety and avoids causing distress or further harm.
- Referral: The consultant shall use the established referral pathways (to be provided by CENSCOPE) to refer any child identified with protection concerns or MHPSS needs to the Case Management Supervisor or MHPSS Officer.
