    Biomedical Engineer

    Responsibilities

    • HJFMRI Nigeria is seeking a Biomedical Engineer to provide technical support to the program in the installation, calibration, repair and planned preventive maintenance of all laboratory equipment, appliances, and related equipment.
    • S/He will support all infrastructure and equipment activities at NMOD/USDOD supported sites at Defence Reference Laboratory (DRL) and Clinical Research Centre (CRC) at Health Innovation Centre, Abuja and other supported sites as directed.
    • The incumbent will contribute to the design, implementation and monitoring of laboratory equipment while ensuring safety testing, repair and maintenance of Biomedical equipment and other infrastructure.
    • S/He will perform routine and complex tasks associated with biomedical engineering management including workload analysis, allocations, equipment acquisition planning, equipment installation, calibration verification/validation and testing that meet manufacturer standards.
    • S/He will support the Senior Biomedical Engineer to ensure all Biomedical engineering components and facility design align with manufacturer standard according to local and international requirements as it relates to electrical and mechanical safety and monitor compliance with equipment planned preventive maintenance and operators’ maintenance schedules at DRL and other NMOD/USDOD WRP-N program sites.

    Responsibilities

    • Implement the acquisition, installation, calibration, verification/validation and maintenance of all equipment and appliances acquired by the program at the DRL and CRC including other NMODHIP/USDOD-WRPN locations as directed. Consult with vendors to monitor and ensure the implementation of contractual agreement on all equipment procured by the program meet expectations.
    • Provide operators’ training on the use, care, and maintenance of equipment. Respond and coordinate equipment faults at DRL, CRC, and NMODHIP/USDOD-WRPN program sites. Ensure timely repair, services and preventive maintenance of equipment and infrastructure are conducted efficiently. Coordinate and execute the monitoring of all equipment for optimal performance.
    • Ensure the maintenance records of all equipment such as installation date, warranty, calibration, validation/verification, and training. Ensure planned preventive and routine maintenance schedules, fault record, troubleshooting repair meet expectations at all times. Support the DRL ISO15189:2022 re-certification and Calibration of Ancillary Laboratory Equipment using ISO/IEC 17025:2019 framework.
    • Coordinate with the Laboratory team on equipment placement, deployment, and support to sites. Initiate maintenance schedule of equipment and ensure task is completed as scheduled. Submit activity report to the Laboratory lead  for review and management. Provide and coordinate onsite training to site instrument technicians on basic equipment maintenance.
    • Install, operate, maintain and monitor Liquid Nitrogen generators plants at DRL and at CRC to produce liquid nitrogen. Provide technical support to logistics unit to ensure proper warehousing and monitoring of all laboratory equipment and other medical devices.
    • Support the supervision of team of biomedical engineers and technicians on equipment maintenance at DRL, CRC and other NMODHIP/USDOD-WRPN program sites. Assist medical laboratory scientist to transfer Liquid Nitrogen to various LN2 freezers and ensure  LN2 stock  availability  for  samples preservation and shipment using generated Liquid Nitrogen.
    • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

    Physical Capabilities 

    • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
    • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
    • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

    Qualifications

    • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Thorough understanding of the underlying principles of physics and electronics as it applies to laboratory and related medical devices. Knowledge and skill in equipment installation, calibration, and preventive maintenance.
    • Knowledge of electronic circuitry and technical aspects of operation, repair, and maintenance of electronic equipment. Knowledge of current regulatory requirements of medical instruments. Knowledge of computers and the interface with medical equipment. Knowledge of color code conventions used in electromechanical equipment.
    • Ability to analyze, repair, and test electronic and electromechanical equipment. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and inspection. Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and illustrated parts drawings of biomedical instruments. Ability to maintain accurate records of repairs, calibration, and tests. Proficient skill in testing of electronic equipment. Ability to move or lift 50 pounds or more of equipment; to push/pull equipment carts; and to kneel, stand, bend and reach during equipment repair. Ability to work as team and multi-task

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field
    • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required
    • Other professional licensures, certifications, or designations required: Documented attendance at least 1-2 clinical laboratory related manufacturer training or seminar is a plus.
    • Registration with COREN or relevant professional body including NSF Certification is Plus.
