    WASH Officer

    Location:

    Borno State, Nigeria with frequent travel to deep field location 

    Reports To:

    Programme Manager

    Job Summary

    The WASH Officer will support the implementation of emergency Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions under the UNICEF-supported integrated humanitarian response programme in Borno State. The officer will coordinate emergency WASH activities aimed at improving access to safe water, sanitation facilities, hygiene promotion, cholera prevention, and outbreak response in hard-to-reach communities.

    Key Roles and Responsibilities

    Programme Implementation

    • Coordinate implementation of emergency WASH interventions including water chlorination, safe water supply, sanitation rehabilitation, desludging, hygiene promotion, and WASH NFI distribution.
    • Support rehabilitation and monitoring of water facilities and sanitation infrastructure in targeted communities.
    • Conduct water quality monitoring and ensure compliance with SPHERE and UNICEF WASH standards.
    • Coordinate hygiene promotion campaigns and behaviour change activities in crisis-affected communities.
    • Support cholera prevention and outbreak response activities, including activation and supervision of CATI teams.
    • Ensure proper implementation of WASH interventions in hard-to-reach and emergency settings.
    • Conduct rapid WASH assessments and support emergency response activities during outbreaks, floods, or displacement situations.

    Coordination and Community Engagement

    • Collaborate with RUWASSA, State and LGA WASH authorities, community leaders, and humanitarian partners on WASH programming.
    • Participate in WASH Sector coordination meetings and technical working groups.
    • Engage community volunteers, hygiene promoters, and local structures to strengthen community ownership and participation.
    • Conduct community sensitization on safe hygiene practices, sanitation, and water safety.

    Monitoring, Reporting, and Quality Assurance

    • Conduct routine field monitoring and supportive supervision to ensure quality implementation of WASH interventions.
    • Monitor water quality indicators including chlorination levels and Free Residual Chlorine (FRC).
    • Maintain accurate records of WASH activities, infrastructure rehabilitation, distributions, and hygiene promotion sessions.
    • Track programme progress against targets and ensure timely reporting of indicators and achievements.
    • Prepare and submit timely weekly, monthly, and donor reports.

    Compliance and Safeguarding

    • Ensure all WASH interventions comply with UNICEF WASH guidelines, SPHERE standards, environmental safety requirements, and safeguarding principles.
    • Promote Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), gender equity, disability inclusion, and safe community engagement.
    • Ensure safe handling, storage, and use of chlorine and other WASH supplies.

    Other Responsibilities

    • Document lessons learned, best practices, and success stories.
    • Perform any other duties assigned by the Programme Manager.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Water Engineering, Public Health, Civil Engineering, or related field.
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in emergency WASH or humanitarian programming.
    • Experience in water quality monitoring, sanitation programming, hygiene promotion, and cholera response.
    • Familiarity with UNICEF WASH standards, SPHERE standards, and emergency response protocols.
    • Strong coordination, reporting, and community engagement skills.
    • Ability to work in hard-to-reach and insecure environments.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

    Nutrition Officer

    Location:

    Reports To: Programme Manager

    Job Summary

    The Nutrition Officer will support the implementation of emergency nutrition interventions under the UNICEF-supported integrated humanitarian response programme in Borno State. The officer will ensure quality implementation of CMAM, MUAC screening, OTP services, MIYCN counselling, referral pathways, and community-based nutrition interventions in hard-to-reach LGAs in line with national guidelines, UNICEF Core Commitments for Children (CCCs), and humanitarian standards.

    Key Roles and Responsibilities

    Programme Implementation

    • Coordinate implementation of emergency nutrition activities including Mass MUAC screening, OTP services, referral pathways, and MIYCN counselling.
    • Support establishment and operation of Mobile OTP sites for management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
    • Conduct and supervise community-based nutrition screening and referral activities using standardized MUAC protocols.
    • Support admission, follow-up, discharge, and reporting of SAM cases in line with CMAM guidelines.
    • Facilitate MIYCN counselling sessions for pregnant and lactating women, caregivers, and community members.
    • Support formation and strengthening of Mother-to-Mother and Father-to-Father support groups.
    • Ensure effective implementation of nutrition interventions in hard-to-reach and emergency-affected communities.
    • Conduct rapid nutrition assessments and support emergency response during disease outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies.

    Coordination and Community Engagement

    • Collaborate with State Ministry of Health, BSPHCDA, health facilities, community leaders, and humanitarian actors on nutrition programming.
    • Support orientation and supervision of community volunteers and frontline workers engaged in nutrition activities.
    • Participate in Nutrition Sector meetings, technical working groups, and coordination forums.
    • Conduct community sensitization and awareness activities on malnutrition prevention and infant feeding practices.

    Monitoring, Reporting, and Quality Assurance

    • Ensure timely collection, validation, analysis, and reporting of nutrition data and indicators.
    • Maintain accurate programme records including screening registers, OTP records, referral forms, and activity reports.
    • Conduct supportive supervision and monitoring visits to ensure quality implementation of nutrition interventions.
    • Track programme performance against targets and support corrective actions where gaps are identified.
    • Prepare and submit timely weekly, monthly, and donor reports.

    Compliance and Safeguarding

    • Ensure compliance with UNICEF guidelines, CMAM protocols, safeguarding standards, PSEA principles, and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP).
    • Promote gender-sensitive, inclusive, and child-friendly approaches during programme implementation.
    • Support safe identification and referral of vulnerable children and caregivers requiring additional services.

    Other Responsibilities

    • Document lessons learned, best practices, success stories, and programme achievements.
    • Perform any other duties assigned by the Programme Manager.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Nursing, Community Health, or related field.
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in emergency nutrition or humanitarian programming.
    • Experience implementing CMAM, MUAC screening, OTP, and MIYCN activities.
    • Familiarity with UNICEF, SPHERE, and national nutrition guidelines.
    • Strong report writing, coordination, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work in hard-to-reach and emergency settings.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
