    Climate Security Lead

    Job Overview

    • As the Climate Security Lead, you will be tasked with co-designing, and managing the program framework for Surge Africa’s newly established project; The Skylark Centre for Climate Security. You will manage the project, conduct research, establish relationship with stakeholders, and carry out important assignments.

    Job Description & Responsibilities

    • Co-design and manage the program framework of the project.
    • Carry out research and data analysis, conduct field visit and harmonize findings into a report.
    • Support the establishment of a website, and ensure strategic communication of the project among allies and relevant stakeholders. Manage any social media account related to the project.
    • Propose innovative and cutting-edge strategies on ways to scale the program, keeping in trend with emerging issues and relevance of intervention to the sector.
    • Manage all aspects of the project

    Qualifications

    • You must be a data and research analyst with at least 3 years of experience in fields of climate security, crisis prevention, peace building and/or human security.
    • Have a reasonable knowledge and experience with climate, energy and security politics.
    • Have measurable and demonstrable experience crafting and conceptualizing solution-oriented dialogues focused on a high-level audience.
    • A creative thinker that can develop strategic communications initiative.
    • A multi-tasker that works well both alone and as part of a team.
    • Must be willing to travel locally and across regions.

    Communications Officer

    Job Description

    • We are looking for an experienced, passionate, and creative Communications Officer to join our team. As a communications officer, you will be responsible for developing and implementing our Communications strategy to robustly shape the reach of our activities & social impact.

    Communications Officer duties and responsibilities

    • Develop and execute strategic communication plans, managing both internal and external communication channels
    • Coordinate media relations, oversee social media, and act as a spokesperson for the organization
    • Define most important communications KPIs, and be on trend in using multiple media touch points to communicate our programs and initiatives.
    • Develop, design, proofread and edit reports, newsletters, blog posts, press releases and other statements
    • Be creative and cross-cutting in defining communications and media content for project, be open to adapting very quickly to new creative patterns of delivering comms work

    • Monitor SEO, user engagement and suggest content optimization.

    Communcations Officer requirements and qualifications

    • 3 years or more of experience as a communications officer, with reasonable knowledge of developing comms strategies and comms campaigns
    • First-hand experience developing or monitoring public or virtual communications campaigns
    • Skillful in using comms strategy and media for brand awareness and impressions.
    • A good understanding of the climate landscape
    • Agile and multi-tasker, a creative thinker with excellent eyes for details
    • A curator and critical thinker with keen interest in delivering narratives that attune to audience interest
    • Intermediate picture and video editing skills

    Resilience Officer

    Role Overview

    • As the Resilience Officer, you will be responsible for managing Surge Africa’s Resilience workstream, an area that focuses on landscape governance, climate adaptation and sustainable development.

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead, manage and expand Surge Africa’s Resilience program and its related projects.
    • Manage consultants and sub-staff that support the Resileince workstream, including support with research and program development, stakeholder engagement, hosting in-person events and virtual sessions etc. 
    • Develop new programs to support the strategic direction of the organization, and manage existing programs, projects and initiatives as it relates to the resilience workstream.
    • Formulate, organize and monitor inter-connected projects, and coordinate cross-project activities within the organisation.
    • Track progress of the program, develop reports and evaluation assessments
    • Build and manage relationships with partners and represent the organization as it relates to the work area.
    • Propose ideas that promotes the program through media and strategic comms.
    • Manage budgets and track expenses as it relates to the Resilience workstream

    Qualifications:

    • 3 years or more working experience in adaptation and sustainability projects with specific focus on food system, landscape restoration, and urban development in the climate space.
    • Well-versed in issues around migration, livelihood development, climate finance, adaptation, and reasonable knowledge of climate security.
    • Reasonable knowledge of local and international climate policies and decrees.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, public speaking and stakeholder management skills
    • Effective skill in developing and executing both in-person engagements and online events
    • A creative thinker and doer that showcases thought leadership and innovation in program delivery
    • Competency in digital software and virtual workspaces

    Impact Media, Program Officer

    Role Overview:

    • As the Strategic Media Program Officer, you will be responsible for developing and managing projects, initiatives and campaigns under the workstream. You will be an ardent program manager, communicator, storyteller and movement weaver. You will work with local and international allies to scale our program, and launch innovative and time bound initiatives that seek to advance the program.  

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead, manage and scale Surge Africa’s Impact Media Program including projects, campaigns and other initiatives under the workstream.
    • Develop new programs to support the strategic direction of the organisation, and manage existing programs, projects and initiatives as it relates to the strategic media workstream.
    • Formulate, organise and monitor inter-connected projects, and coordinate related activities within the organisation
    • Track progress of the program, develop reports and evaluation assessments, manage budgets and track expenses as it relates to the strategic media workstream
    • Build and manage relationships with climate justice movements and organisations working at the intersection of climate and media, scale the reach of our programs across board, and bring in new partners to the fold of our work  
    • Develop program strategy and operational plan for the project, and ensure operational strategy aligns with organisational goals
    • Coordinate the development of toolkits, training materials, and other documents as needed.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum 3 years demonstrable experience developing and managing strategic communications initiatives and programs deeply rooted in media and communications to drive strategic change at both policy and community/movement level  
    • A good understanding of politics around capitalism, neocolonial ideologies, and historical facts around extractivism and climate justice.
    • A remarkable knowledge of how movement/networks organise themselves and function both in Africa and internationally
    • A strong working knowledge of project management, program design and advocacy campaigns Ability to transform rough ideas and general concepts into actions, projects, and completed products or messages.
    • Proven track record of engaging in movements and network, and building and sustaining relationships with organisations and climate justice  networks within Africa and beyond. 
    • Ability to anticipate climate trends using both research and own insight, and brings the project into the fore of that trajectory.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    Senior Program Officer

    • The SPO will be tasked with overseeing multiple projects at once. This means they must be able to juggle many different responsibilities simultaneously while still ensuring that each individual project is progressing smoothly.

    Senior Program Officer Responsibilities

    Qualifications

    • At least five years of experience in international development, climate change and program management;
    • Excellent English communication skills (written and oral);
    • Willingness and ability to work in teams;
    • Experience working with donor-funded programs preferred
    • Exceptional time management aptitude, highly motivated, and the ability to be flexible
    • Experience developing multi-release roadmap near-term project deliverables
    • Solid planning, time management and follow through skills, meticulous attention to detail
    • High level of motivation, independence, teamwork
    • Advanced experience in MS Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe; experience with Salesforce a plus.
    • Willingness to learn new software tools and use them for program support.
    • Proficiency with problem solving, analysis, and applying appropriate level of judgment.
    • Positive attitude, sense of humor, and a commitment to being part of, and building, a positive work environment.
