    WaSH Assistant(s)

    Background
    Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) is a non-governmental organization that has been engaged in developmental works in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States for the past 50 years. JDPC also focuses on Agriculture, WaSH, Nutrition, MHPSS and other emergency programming, reaching out to all persons on the basis of need, regardless of creed, ethnicity or nationality.
    JDPC is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the above-mentioned position to work in Kaga LGA.
    The candidate must be prepared to start work as soon as possible.
    Project Background
    The ECHO-funded project, ‘Scaling-up Assistance in Hard-to-Reach Areas’ (SAHaRA) is providing safe, accessible, dignified, and inclusive humanitarian food and WASH assistance to the most vulnerable IDPs and host communities in Kaga and Magumeri LGAs.
    This intervention is jointly implemented by Caritas Germany, Catholic Foundation for Overseas Development (CAFOD), Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN), and the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) Maiduguri.
    The project is overarching in three key areas: Food security, WaSH and Protection. The Food Security component seeks to improve the Food Consumption Score of households through cash transfers, ensuring targeting of the most vulnerable (women, children, people with special needs) and making sure that access to cash is fair and dignified.
    The WaSH component seeks to improve freshwater access to people in need, while improving the hygiene of beneficiaries of cash transfers, and improving access to WASH facilities for elderly and disabled.
    Lastly, the Protection component seeks to improve awareness of and access to Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and child protection services by establishing or supporting community-based protection structures, through gaining a better understanding of communities‘ protection needs, and resolving protection risks emanating from within the communities.
    WaSH Assistant(s)
    The WaSH Assistant will form part of the Hygiene Promotion and Community Engagement Team in the delivery of support to IDPs in Borno State and work with JDPC Maiduguri to implement the hygiene promotion and community mobilization and engagement component. The Hygiene Promotion Community
    Mobilizer (HP CM) will work with the Hygiene Promotion Officers and community committees to lead the delivery of hygiene promotion messaging and create hygiene behavioral change. The HP CM will also capitalize on their community mobilization role to support shelter/WASH infrastructure and NFI distribution sensitization and messaging being implemented by JDPC.
    Responsibilities of WaSH Assistant:

    • With the support of the WASH officer, conduct assessments and technical surveys on new and existing water sources and sanitation facilities (Latrines, bathing facilities, and laundry stations).
    • Support during the design of appropriate and cost-effective water delivery systems and sanitation facilities, including robust drainage mechanisms at collection points and sanitation.
    • Support during the identification, training, and supervising of the WASH COM Members.
    • Work closely with the Hygiene Promotion over placement/siting of water and sanitation facilities to ensure that beneficiary needs, and preferences are fully met.
    • Actively supervision all construction works related to water and sanitation.
    • Provide weekly reports of progress on the construction of water and sanitation facilities.
    • Seek guidance and approval from WASH officer on any changes to approved designs for water and sanitation facilities
    • In coordination with the WASH officer ensure that stocks of materials (pipes, fittings, taps, slabs, tarpaulins, cement, reinforcement bars, etc.), tools, and any consumables (PVC glue, threading tape, hand pump spare parts, door locks, etc.) are maintained and fit for purpose
    • Maintain comprehensive control systems on materials and tools used including notes on the quality of materials procured
    • Ensure that all water and sanitation works are in line with national and local requirements
    • Participate in review and evaluation of work to assist in enhancing program delivery and quality.
    • Daily volume of water supplied/delivered to location(s) including volumes and time of availability/day.
    • Maintain records of the number and location of all water collection points
    • Conduct water user surveys
    • Conduct water quality Monitoring at source and Household level
    • Conduct Sanitary surveys
    • Routine O&M of the water distribution system (s) and sanitation facilities including drainage around all water points and sanitation facilities
    • Maintain records of the number and location of all sanitation facilities (latrines, bathing facilities, and laundry stations).

    Minimum Qualifications and Skills

    • Minimum Diploma in hydrology, civil engineering or, related fields 
    • Literacy and Numeracy skills
    • Demonstrated capacity in technical support and coordination.
    • Must have crossed –cultural sensitivity, problem solving and negotiation skills.
    • Ability to cope and work under pressure.
    • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
    • Effective multi-tasking, organizational capacity, prioritization skills are necessary.
    • English (written and spoken) is highly appreciated, Hausa and Kanuri are an added advantage
    • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members is essential.
