    Community Volunteer

    Location: (Lawan Musa, Garin Lamido, Zango, Nasarawa, Katuzu) BadeLGA, (Dumsai/Dogon kuka, Bulabulin, Dabule, Hausari) Nguru LGA, (Dawasa, Darin Langawa, Nangere, Kukuri/Chiromari, Langawa) Nangere LGA, Yobe State

    Duration: 28 Months

    Number of Positions: 18 Community Volunteers

    Purpose of the Assignment

    The purpose of this assignment is to engage committed community volunteers to support the identification of out-of-school children with disabilities and to carry out awareness-raising activities with parents/guardians and community members. Volunteers will help improve understanding of the rights and needs of children with disabilities, promote school enrolment, and contribute to creating a more inclusive community environment.

    Scope of Work

    Community volunteers will be responsible for the following tasks:

    1. Identify and engage households with out-of-school children, including those with disabilities, through door-to-door visits and community mapping.
    2. Organise and facilitate community sensitisation activities, including:
      1. Community meetings and dialogues
      2. Distribution of information, education, and communication (IEC) materials
      3. Support for community theatre performances 
      4. Radio and local media activities
    3. Work in collaboration with organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), religious and traditional leaders to reinforce key messages on inclusive education.
    4. Promote the enrolment of children with disabilities in schools and provide information on available educational support services.
    5. Assist with the organisation, set-up, and dismantling of community awareness events.
    6. Document feedback from parents/guardians and share observations with TCDI to inform future programming.
    7. Uphold the values of inclusion, respect, and non-discrimination in all interactions.
    8. Perform any other task assigned to by the program officer.

    Specific Deliverables

    Volunteers are expected to deliver the following:

    1. Attend all orientation and coordination sessions organised by TCDI.
    2. Successfully identify and engage targeted households in assigned communities.
    3. Conduct and support a minimum number of sensitisation activities as agreed with TCDI.
    4. Provide summary reports or brief updates on activities and community feedback.
    5. Actively contribute to the promotion of inclusive education messages.

    Required Qualifications and Competencies

    Volunteers must meet the following criteria:

    1. Resident of or familiar with the assigned community.
    2. Previous experience working with persons with disabilities.
    3. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
    4. Ability to engage respectfully with diverse community members, including religious and traditional leaders.
    5. Prior experience in community mobilisation or volunteer activities is an advantage.
    6. A minimum educational qualification of secondary school leaving certificate.

    Reporting and Coordination

    Volunteers will report to the project officer and work closely with organisation of persons with disabilities and other community-based stakeholders. Volunteers are expected to maintain regular communication and share progress and challenges in a timely manner.

    Timeframe

    Volunteers will be engaged for a period of 5 months, with an expected commitment of 8 hours daily, 5 days a week. 

    Support and Benefits

    • 30,000 naira will be provided monthly for transport costs and communication.
    • Volunteers will receive supervision, and technical support from TCDI staff.

    Safeguarding

    All community volunteers are required to strictly follow TCDI and CBM safeguarding policies and maintain high ethical standards throughout their engagement. This includes:

    Application procedure and deadlines.

    • Respecting the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of all community members, especially children with disabilities.
    • Obtaining appropriate permission from parents, guardians, or community leaders before interacting with children.
    • Maintaining confidentiality in all records, reporting, and discussions.
    • Being vigilant in identifying and promptly reporting any safeguarding concerns or risks related to children or community activities.
    • Promoting safety, inclusion, and equity in every community interaction and during all sensitisation activities.
