    Development Communication and Reporting Specialist

    Location: Maiduguri, Borno

    Organizational Setting

    • The crisis in Nigeria, located mainly around the Lake Chad Basin, is a complex emergency characterized by food insecurity, violence and displacement. Furthermore, subsistence based livelihoods are impacted upon by climate-induced desertification, drought, receding lake/water stress. The FAO Lake Chad Strategy 2017-2019 includes ensuring sustainable and equitable access to resources and services as well as sustainable growth of livelihood opportunities are therefore critical priorities.
    • FAO in collaboration with UNWOMEN and WFP has received support from the European Development Fund (EDF) under the EU Support to Response, Recovery and Resilience in Borno State, to implement a 3-year programme to restore and improve sustainable agriculture-based livelihoods for food security, employment, and nutrition improvement in Borno State. FAO’s interventions include supporting smallholder farmers (especially youth) to have improve market opportunities and enterprise development through the support of mainly women’s entrepreneurs.

    Reporting Lines

    • The  Development Communication and Reporting Specialist reports to the FAO Representative (FAOR) through the Deputy FAOR in Maiduguri and the project coordinator.

    Technical Focus

    • For the purpose of raising awareness of the project and FAO activities in the northeast Nigeria generally, the Development Communication and Reporting Specialistt will support all internal and external communication and reporting as required.

    Tasks and Responsibilities

    • Under the overall supervision and guidance of the FAO Representative in Nigeria through the Deputy FAOR in Maiduguri, and with direct supervision of the Project Coordinator in close collaboration with national and international consultants in the project team, the incumbent will undertake the following activities:
    • Support the communication and visibility of EU-funded project to restore livelihoods in Borno State, mapping programmatic achievements and success stories throughout the implementation of the project (2018-2021).
    • Support the expansion of FAO Nigeria’s media database and strengthen engagement of local media and international correspondents based in Nigeria.
    • Coordinate the finalization of reports, briefs and other publications in collaboration with the international communication and reporting officer and technical focal points.
    • Contribute to the layout, design and editing of content, including video, the FAO northeast Nigeria bulletin, infographics, one pagers and other audio-visual content to be developed on demand. 
    • Draft articles, social media content, media messages and speeches for the FAO Nigeria and FAO in Emergencies websites and Social Media.
    • Contribute to the Access database to track and analyse media coverage of FAO’s northeastern response.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Degree in Communication. A master’s degree in development is desirable.
    • 5-8 years of relevant working experience with University Degree or 2-4 years relevant working experience with Advanced University Degree.

    Technical/Functional Skills

    • Strong story-telling skills and knowledge of narrative report writing for resource partners.
    • At least one year experience working in development communications, emergency communications, journalism, policy communications, resource mobilization, proposal writing or academia.
    • Skilled in the use of design and editing software for the production of written and audiovisual content.
    • Knowledge of the Adobe suite of programmes, or programmes such as Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro.
    • Experience with similar internationally funded development projects will be an added advantage.
    • Strong willingness to undertake deep field missions.
    • Experience of projects involving multiple and diverse stakeholders including; Governments, private sector, civil society and end users.
    • Knowledge of one of the major languages (for e.g. Kanuri, Hausa) spoken in the northeast states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe would be highly desirable.
