We are seeking a dynamic and accomplished Environmental & Economic Sustainability Manager in Nigeria to lead the design, implementation, and scaling of programmes that strengthen Regenerative Agribusiness, Waste-to-Wealth Circular Economy initiatives, and inclusive financial systems for vulnerable communities, with a priority focus on youth and women empowerment.
This is a cross-disciplinary leadership position responsible for designing and overseeing programs that enhance the financial resilience of vulnerable populations while simultaneously ensuring sustainable natural resource management. The role will typically focus on the intersection of poverty reduction and environmental stewardship.
This is a local national package; applicants should have permission to work in Nigeria.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Programme Design: Lead implementation of the Environmental & Economic Sustainability (EES) Corporate Priority (CP) focused on: Climate-smart agribusiness, Circular economy enterprises, Market-linked vocational skills and Financial inclusion through Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Climate-Smart Agribusiness Development: Support communities transitioning from subsistence farming to ‘market-oriented Regenerative Agribusiness'.
Value Chain and Market Systems Development: Strengthen local economic systems by connecting producers to markets.
Youth and Women Economic Empowerment: Design livelihood opportunities targeting unemployed youth and women.
Financial Inclusion and SHGs + Integration: Strengthen community financial and health resilience through expanded savings systems and scale-up of Dreamsave use.
Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement: Develop strategic relationships with key actors. Collaborate with internal departments (Procurement, Operations, Programme) and external partners to advance sustainability initiatives.
Programme Management: Enhance quality programme delivery to ensure sustainable and impactful outcomes.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning: Ensure evidence-based programme management.
Corporate Policies & Procedures: In conjunction with the HR Lead, responsible for the comprehensive briefing and induction for staff on EES corporate priority, ensuring their familiarity with Tearfund' Nigeria' s EES strategic direction and priorities in alignment with the country strategy objectives. Ensures that policies and commitments regarding the protection of children and vulnerable adults and the prevention of fraud and bribery are consistently applied.
Cost Efficiency & Resource Management: Identify opportunities to reduce costs through energy efficiency projects, waste minimization, and supply chain optimization (Circular Economy principles).
Compliance & Risk: Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and sustainability laws. Conduct thorough risk assessments on environmental and social governance (ESG) factors.
Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal departments (Procurement, Operations, Marketing) and external partners to advance sustainability initiatives.
Grant & Investment Research: Research and apply for green grants or funding, to fund sustainability projects.
Qualifications
Education:
Master's Degree in one of the following fields: Agricultural Economics/Rural Development / Development Studies/Climate Change & Sustainability/Economics or Agribusiness.
Experience:
7–10 years experience in livelihoods or economic development programming. Proven experience in market systems development and value chain programming.
Experienced in circular economy innovations and blended finance approaches.
Experience in private and public sector engagement.
Significant experience in leading program design and developing proposals.
Confidence working within a team and providing guidance to partners.
Proficiency in market assessments, climate adaptation planning, and financial inclusion tools.
Work experience in both humanitarian and development.
Experience implementing projects in fragile context.
Significant and demonstrable experience of working with local partners in a participatory manner.
Skills:
Strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills.
Ability to write business cases for sustainability investments. Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
Training, coaching and mentoring skills.
Concept Note, Proposal development and Report writing skills.
