Location of Implementation: Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara & Sokoto States, Nigeria.
Position Summary
The WASH& Shelter Assistant (Volunteer) will support the planning and implementation of water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion, shelter construction activities at the community level. The volunteer will assist in hygiene awareness sessions, sanitation campaigns, and field monitoring to ensure improved WASH and Shelter practices and healthier living environments.
This role is suitable for individuals who are passionate about public health, community service, and environmental cleanliness.
Specific Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the implementation of WASH/Shelter activities under the guidance of the WASH/Shelter Officer.
- Participate in community mobilization and sensitization on hygiene practices such as handwashing, safe water storage, and environmental sanitation.
- Assist in organizing WASH awareness campaigns in schools and community centers.
- Help distribute hygiene kits and demonstrate their proper use.
- Monitor ongoing constructions and rehabilitations, community sanitation facilities and report maintenance needs.
- Support the collection of WASH-related data, including participation, feedback, and activity outcomes.
- Promote menstrual hygiene awareness and safe hygiene management practices among adolescent girls and women.
- Participate in cleaning exercises and advocacy campaigns promoting waste management and environmental protection.
- Ensure inclusion of vulnerable groups (children, women, and persons with disabilities) in WASH activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Areas of Accountability
The WASH & Shelter Assistant (Volunteer) will be accountable for:
- Activity Delivery: Supporting timely and effective implementation of WASH awareness and sanitation activities.
- Community Engagement: Promoting active participation and ownership of hygiene initiatives.
- Data Management: Ensuring accurate collection and reporting of WASH/Shelter data.
- Compliance: Upholding GIDAUNIYA’s safeguarding, confidentiality, and code of conduct standards.
- Teamwork: Collaborating effectively with fellow volunteers, community leaders, and local health workers.
Qualifications and Skills
- University degree, HND and ND in Public Health, Environmental Health, construction management, civil engineering or related field is an added advantage.
- Interest in hygiene promotion, community health, or environmental protection.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to mobilize community members and facilitate small group sessions.
- Willingness to work in the field and rural communities.
- Fluency in English and local languages is desirable.
