    Nutrition Assistant

    ABOUT THE JOB:

    The Nutrition Officer will support the implementation, monitoring, and quality delivery of nutrition interventions at the field level, focusing on Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM), Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), supplementary feeding, and nutrition promotion activities. He/she will work closely with health facilities, community volunteers, and program teams to ensure timely screening, treatment, referral, and follow-up of malnourished children and pregnant/lactating women in communities, camps, and health facilities. The Nutrition Officer contributes to integration with health, WASH, child protection, and other sectors while supporting data collection, reporting, and community engagement.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Nutrition Assistant’s primary responsibilities include the following:

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Conduct community-based screening (MUAC, weight/height, oedema checks) for children 6-59 months and pregnant/lactating women to identify cases of SAM/MAM and refer appropriately;
    • Support admission, treatment, follow-up, and discharge processes for beneficiaries in OTP, TSFP/SFP, and BSFP (if applicable) in line with national CMAM/IMAM protocols;
    • Provide IYCF counseling, facilitate mother-to-mother support groups, cooking demonstrations, and nutrition education sessions for caregivers;
    • Carry out active case finding, home visits, defaulter tracing, and referrals to health facilities or other services as needed;
    • Assist in the distribution of nutrition commodities (RUTF, RUSF, supplementary foods) and non-food items; monitor proper utilization and report any issues;
    • Support community sensitization, mobilization, and awareness on nutrition, hygiene, and health-seeking behaviors;
    • Ensure gender, protection, disability, and do-no-harm principles are applied in all activities, with safe referrals for vulnerable cases;
    • Collect accurate data on screenings, admissions, follow-ups, and outcomes using approved tools; compile and submit daily/weekly reports to supervisor;
    • Participate in supportive supervision and on-the-job mentoring of community volunteers, lead mothers, and health workers;
    • Identify and report challenges, stock issues, or contextual changes affecting nutrition activities;
    • Collaborate with health facility staff, community leaders, and other sector teams for integrated service delivery;
    • Support nutrition assessments, surveys, and data verification as directed;
    • Promote beneficiary accountability and feedback mechanisms in nutrition interventions;
    • Ensure proper documentation, filing, and adherence to organizational and donor guidelines;
    • Monitor security and contextual risks in implementation areas and report promptly.

    QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition & Dietetics, Community Health, Nursing, Public Health, or related field from a recognized institution;
    • At least 2 years of experience in nutrition programming, with at least 1 year in humanitarian/emergency contexts supporting CMAM/IMAM and/or IYCF activities;
    • Proven field experience in community screening, case management, and nutrition promotion;
    • Basic knowledge of monitoring, data collection, and reporting in nutrition programs;
    • Experience with donor-funded humanitarian projects is an added advantage;
    • Ability to work in challenging field environments with strong professional ethics.

    KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

    • Understanding of CMAM/IMAM protocols, IYCF practices, and emergency nutrition interventions;
    • Ability to work with communities and diverse stakeholders;
    • Initiative in identifying and addressing field-level challenges;
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills for counseling and mobilization;
    • Basic data management and reporting abilities;
    • Computer literacy (MS Office, basic data entry);
    • Empathy, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to humanitarian principles.
