    Nursery / Early Years Teacher

    Location: Gwarinpa, Abuja (FCT) 

    Job Summary

    • The Nursery/Early Years Teacher at Discovering Talents Academy (DTA) is responsible for creating a stimulating, safe, and nurturing learning environment for our youngest pupils (Pre-Nursery and Nursery).
    • This role involves delivering age-appropriate, play-based instruction that fosters holistic development across all learning domains.
    • The Early Years Teacher is crucial in upholding DTA's core mission to "create an atmosphere of fun where kids can enjoy being kids" and its vision to "discover and bring out the uniqueness in every child," by ensuring individualized teaching and promoting foundational Skill Acquisition within the SHRID niche.

    Key Responsibilities
    Instructional Delivery & Curriculum Implementation:

    • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, play-based lessons and activities that align with DTA's blended British-Nigerian Early Years curriculum and developmental milestones.
    • Implement DTA's SHRID niche, particularly focusing on:
      • Fostering early Skill Acquisitionin literacy (pre-reading, phonics), numeracy (pre-maths), and practical life skills.
      • Ensuring the consistent implementation of foundational Handwritingskills through age-appropriate activities.
      • Cultivating a positive approach to Readingthrough storytelling, phonics, and exposure to books.
      • Applying Individualized Teachingstrategies to cater to the unique developmental pace and learning styles of each child.
      • Promoting clear Dictionand expressive communication through songs, rhymes, and conversations.
    • Utilize a variety of teaching methods, sensory experiences, and creative play to make learning joyful and effective for young children.
    • Set clear, age-appropriate learning objectives and provide gentle, constructive feedback to support their early development.

    Child Development & Welfare:

    • Provide attentive care and supervision to pupils, ensuring their physical and emotional safety and well-being at all times.
    • Monitor and support children's personal care needs (e.g., toilet training, hygiene practices, meal times).
    • Observe and document children's developmental progress, behaviors, and any concerns, reporting to parents and relevant school management.
    • Foster positive social-emotional development, encouraging empathy, sharing, and respectful interactions among children.

    Classroom Management & Environment:

    • Create a vibrant, clean, organized, and stimulating classroom environment that encourages exploration, discovery, and independent play.
    • Implement positive behavior management strategies appropriate for early years, focusing on guidance and encouragement.
    • Ensure classroom resources, toys, and equipment are safe, well-maintained, and accessible to children.
    • Collaborate with caregivers to maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the classroom and associated facilities.

    Parent & Community Engagement:

    • Maintain open, warm, and effective communication channels with parents/guardians regarding their child's daily activities, progress, and any concerns.
    • Foster strong partnerships with parents, providing guidance on supporting their child's learning at home.
    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences and school events relevant to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

    Professional Development & Collaboration:

    • Actively participate in departmental meetings, school-wide professional development sessions, and training programs, particularly those related to early childhood education.
    • Collaborate with colleagues (e.g., Assistant Teachers, Caregivers, other Early Years Teachers) to share best practices and enhance the overall early years program.
    • Contribute to school events and activities as required.
    • Utilize the DTA software for academic tracking, communication, and appraisal processes.

    Policy Adherence:

    • Strictly adhere to all DTA policies and procedures, including those related to punctuality, dress code, child protection, safety, and ethical conduct.
    • Uphold the professional standards and values of Discovering Talents Academy at all times.

    Qualifications

    • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, or a related field with a strong focus on early years pedagogy. A National Certificate in Education (NCE) or a Diploma in Early Childhood Education is also acceptable.
    • Experience: Minimum of [e.g., 2-4] years of proven experience teaching in a nursery or early years setting.
    • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of child development theories, play-based learning methodologies, and early years curriculum frameworks. Familiarity with DTA's Vision, Mission, and SHRID Niche is essential.
    • Technological Proficiency: Basic proficiency in using educational technology and relevant software for lesson planning and communication. Experience with school management software (e.g., DTA software) is an advantage.
    • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with young children, parents, and colleagues.
    • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with exceptional patience, empathy, warmth, and a genuine love for working with young children.
