    Legal Practitioner / Legal Counsel

    Position Summary

    • The Legal Practitioner will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the business, providing expert guidance on corporate, commercial, employment, regulatory, contract, and litigation matters.
    • The role requires a proactive professional capable of balancing legal risk management with commercial business objectives.
    • The successful candidate will support contract negotiations, dispute resolution, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder management while ensuring that the Group's interests are protected at all times.

    Key Responsibilities
    Corporate & Commercial Legal Advisory:

    • Deliver timely, practical legal advice to management and business units to support strategic transactions and initiatives.
    • Draft, negotiate, and manage full-lifecycle commercial agreements, including service agreements, EPC contracts, procurement, consultancy, joint ventures, NDAs, and MOUs.
    • Identify potential legal risks across business operations and implement effective mitigation strategies.

    Litigation & Dispute Management:

    • Manage litigation, arbitration, mediation, and dispute resolution matters.
    • Liaise with external solicitors and regulatory agencies.
    • Develop legal strategies to protect the company's interests.
    • Monitor ongoing legal matters and provide periodic updates to management.
    • Coordinate collection and preservation of legal evidence and documentation.

    Regulatory Compliance:

    • Ensure compliance with applicable Nigerian laws and regulations.
    • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting the business.
    • Advise management on compliance obligations and legal implications.
    • Support regulatory audits and investigations.
    • Develop compliance policies and procedures.

    Corporate Governance & Secretariat Support:

    • Support Board and Management meetings.
    • Prepare Board resolutions and legal documentation.
    • Maintain statutory records and corporate filings.
    • Ensure compliance with corporate governance requirements.
    • Coordinate filings with relevant regulatory authorities.

    Employment & Labour Law:

    • Provide legal guidance on employment-related matters.
    • Support disciplinary, grievance, and termination processes.
    • Review policies and employment contracts.
    • Advise on labour law compliance and industrial relations matters.

    Contract Management:

    • Develop and maintain a contract management framework.
    • Monitor contractual obligations and compliance requirements.
    • Support contract administration and risk assessment.
    • Maintain a repository of legal and contractual documents.

    Risk Management:

    • Identify legal and regulatory risks across the business.
    • Develop legal risk mitigation strategies.
    • Conduct legal due diligence on business transactions.
    • Support enterprise risk management initiatives.

    Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

    • Percentage of contracts reviewed within agreed timelines.
    • Number of legal disputes successfully resolved.
    • Reduction in legal and compliance risks.
    • Regulatory compliance rate.
    • Contract turnaround time.
    • Litigation management effectiveness.
    • Legal cost optimization.
    • Timeliness of legal advice and support.
    • Board and statutory compliance adherence.
    • Stakeholder satisfaction score.

    Qualifications
    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B)
    • Barrister - at - Law (B.L.)
    • Masters of Law (LLM)
    • Called to the Nigerian Bar.

    Professional Membership:

    • Member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
    • Membership of relevant professional bodies will be an advantage.

    Experience:

    • 7 – 15 years post - call experience.
    • Experience in corporate / commercial law practice or in - house legal advisory role.
    • Demonstrated experience managing complex contracts and legal disputes.
    • Strong knowledge of Nigerian corporate and commercial law.

    Ideal Candidate Profile:

    • The ideal candidate is a commercially minded Legal Practitioner with strong business acumen and the ability to provide practical legal solutions that support organizational growth while protecting the company's interests.
    • They must possess excellent contract negotiation skills, sound legal judgment, and the confidence to engage with senior executives, regulators, external counsel, and business stakeholders.
    • The individual should have experience operating within a fast-paced corporate environment and be capable of balancing legal compliance with business objectives.

    Preferred Candidate Snapshot:

    • 7 – 10+ years post - call experience.
    • Strong corporate / commercial law background.
    • Experience supporting executive leadership teams.
    • Proven contract negotiation expertise.
    • Strong litigation and dispute management exposure.
    • Excellent drafting and analytical skills.
    • Familiarity with Nigerian regulatory frameworks.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
