    Legal Counsel

    Job Overview

    • The ideal Candidate is required to provide support and resources for survivors of child sexual abuse through a variety of legal processes.
    • This includes assisting survivors of child sexual abuse, handling crimes in abuse cases,assisting survivors seeking domestic violence protection orders,helping to empower clients with self advocacy and working closely with the justice department on systemic response to sexual abuse cases.
    • The Legal Counsel is responsible for monitoring and/or advising on all legal matters,organisation contracts, and agreements.
    • The legal counsel  will ensure that they provide support to the organisation's objectives and goals, which can help inform and direct future strategic legal actions following the aims and objectives.

    Job Responsibility

    Legal Representation & Advocacy                                                                                                                                            

    • Provide legal advocacy services for survivors of child sexual abuse and domestic violence.
    • Attend courts and make appearances as counsel holding watching brief.
    • Provide legal information, assistance and court support in matters of children and their protection against risk or harm.
    • Conduct essential intake interviews with beneficiaries to assess legal and urgent protection needs.
    • Provide advice on different legal issues and assist in drafting legal opinions, memoranda and other briefing documents for the organisation.
    • Prepare and accompany survivors and non-offending families to court for temporary and permanent protection order hearings.
    • Assist in organizing meetings with the lawyers from the Ministry of Justice before the case starts in court.
    • Assist in gathering evidence to support the police in doing their work thoroughly.
    • Conduct research for the organisation on legal matters by utilising various resources and selecting the relevant material to analyse the legal information.
    • Assist in training new legal counsel Counsel and developing/maintaining training manual.
    • Attend every court date and police interview with clients, keeping the clients updated on the progress and status of the case and accompanying them to the police station whenever their attention is needed.
    • Work with other legal representatives in the organisation and outside in a cooperative way that allows for timely completion of work and smooth transition of survivors.
    • Maintain professional working relationships with judges, attorneys, and victim advocates to represent the survivors effectively.

    Partnership Development

    • Cultivate relationships with child protection agencies at local, regional, and national level.
    • Establish connections with other non-profit organizations working in the child protection space.
    • Actively participate in collaborative projects and initiatives with external organizations.
    • Forge robust partnerships with other legal entities, and foster alliances with legal professionals, law firms, and relevant legal institutions.

    Qualifications

    • LLB in Law and active bar membership.
    • At least 5 years experience post-NYSC
    • Proven experience in child protection or related legal fields.
    • Strong understanding of national and international child protection laws.

    Skills and ability

    • Knowledgeable in legal matters especially in providing advocacy for survivors of child sexual abuse and violence.
    • Exceptional legal research and analytical skills.
    • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
    • Familiar with court processes and procedures.
    • Good communications skill
