    Humanities Teacher

    Responsibilities include

    • Develop nine-week thematic units for humanities classes using the backward design model in which planning follows these three steps: Identifying standards-aligned desired results (in terms of the acquisition, meaning, and transfer);
    • Designing performance tasks/assessments that provide evidence of learning; and creating a learning plan. Humanities units must integrate language arts, social studies, and civic standards.
    • Deliver daily humanities lessons that are engaging, relevant, and rigorous.
    • Understand and apply effective strategies for intervention and differentiation in the classroom, including serving English language learners and students with individualized education plans (IEPs).
    • Embed opportunities for student critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, as well as use of technology and digital media, into all lesson and unit plans.
    • Integrate reading and writing into every class taught, every day.
    • Maintain strong classroom management and hold students accountable for upholding school rules, student-developed norms, and classroom expectations.
    • Serve as an advisor to a group of 12 to 15 multi-age students who you meet with daily and to whom you provide support.
    • Develop a sense of community within the advisory group and implement any advisory curriculum.
    • Mentor and support these students’ development of academic, social, health, and parenting skills to ensure they stay on track to graduation.
    • Provide education and coaching for students around goal-setting and the development of non-cognitive skills such as perseverance, courage, and more. Celebrate student success at least weekly.

    Person Specification

    • Interested candidates should possess an NCE qualification with 5 - 10 years work experience.  
    • Commitment to the safeguarding of all learners
    • Demonstrable effectiveness in promoting equality and diversity through teaching, managing the learning environment and challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes
    • Knowledge and experience of the national curriculum in own specialist area
    • Experience of working with students with social, emotional and mental health needs.
    • Effective in using a broad range of assessment measures as a driver for improving learners’ performance
    • Interest in working with vulnerable students.
    • Understanding of alternative and therapeutic interventions for student progression.
    • Proven good standard of teaching skills and abilities or demonstrable potential to attain the highest standards of teaching
    • Remains motivated, even when under pressure, to ensure that a high standard service to the customer is maintained
    • Excellent communication and facilitation skills with all stakeholders
    • Adopt a reflective and restorative approach.
    • A high level of tolerance and an entirely non-judgemental attitude to children
    • Committed to reflecting on own performance, seeking and accepting constructive feedback and learning from own experiences

    Salary
    N45,000 - N55,000 monthly.
