    Consultant Haematologist

    ​​​​​​Job Purpose

    • The Consultant Haematologist will be responsible for providing expert care to patients with a wide range of haematological conditions, including benign and malignant blood disorders. The role holder will play a critical role in both inpatient and outpatient settings, involving the diagnosis, treatment, and management of haematological diseases.
    • He/ She will lead multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss complex cases, ensuring evidence-based and patient-centred care. The Consultant will also contribute to the strategic development of haematology services, including the adoption of modern technologies, clinical trials, and innovative treatment protocols to enhance patient outcomes.

    Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

    Clinical Practice & Leadership

    • Conduct comprehensive haematological assessments and interpret diagnostic test results (e.g., blood films, bone marrow biopsies, genetic testing).
    • Manage patients with acute and chronic haematological conditions, including leukaemia, lymphomas, haemoglobinopathies, and coagulation disorders.
    • Approve patient discharge plans, follow-ups, and medical reporting.
    • Provide leadership and mentorship within the haematology department.
    • Discuss diagnoses, treatment options, risks, and expected outcomes with patients and families.

    Strategic Development

    • Participate in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Review and update departmental policies in line with current best practices.
    • Contribute to the strategic planning of haematology services and new care pathways.
    • Support the introduction of innovative technologies and techniques (e.g., CAR-T cell therapy, molecular diagnostics).

    Governance & Quality Assurance

    • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and clinical governance frameworks.
    • Monitor resource utilization and contribute to clinical audit activities.

    Administrative & Operational Duties

    • Maintain accurate clinical records and prepare departmental performance reports.
    • Support coordination of clinic operations and patient logistics.
    • Participate in hospital-wide planning and decision-making.

    Training and Education

    • Mentor junior medical staff, residents, and fellows.
    • Facilitate training in diagnostic and management approaches in haematology.
    • Create mentorship pathways for emerging leaders.
    • Participate in interprofessional education programs.

    Educational Requirements, Skills and Competences

    • Medical Degree (MBBCh, MD) from a recognized institution.
    • Fellowship or Residency in Haematology from a reputable institution.
    • Possession of a valid medical license.
    • Board certification in Haematology is desirable.
    • Experience with advanced diagnostic technologies (e.g., flow cytometry, molecular genetics).
    • Experience in stem cell transplantation or haemato-oncology is an added advantage.
    • Proficiency in diagnosing and managing a wide range of haematological disorders, including:
    • Malignant conditions (leukaemias, lymphomas, myelomas).
    • Benign conditions (anemias, haemoglobinopathies, bleeding/clotting disorders).
    • Advanced skills in interpreting diagnostic tests (e.g., blood films, bone marrow biopsies, flow cytometry, molecular genetics).
    • Competence in performing procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and therapeutic apheresis.
    • Experience in stem cell transplantation (autologous/allogeneic) is highly desirable.

    Experience

    • 5–7 years of post-consultant experience in a hospital haematology setting.
    • Broad clinical experience in managing haematological diseases.
    • Completion of a fellowship in Haematology from an accredited institution.
    • Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic skills in general and subspecialty haematology (e.g., haemato-oncology, coagulation disorders, transfusion medicine).
    • Proficiency in invasive and non-invasive procedures (e.g., bone marrow biopsies, apheresis).
    • Ability to manage acute haematological emergencies (e.g., bleeding disorders, thrombotic events).
    • Experience in multidisciplinary team collaboration (oncologists, pathologists, intensivists).
