    Translating Agency

Girl Effect requires an agency to manage translations for its two projects: Technology Enabled Girl Ambassadors (TEGA) and Girls Connect.

About TEGA - a Girl Effect initiative

TEGA (Technology Enabled Girl Ambassadors) is a technology driven peer-to-peer research product and Girl Effect’s potential solution to reaching her and gaining accurate insight in her life.

Girl Effect’s ambition is to empower the hardest to reach demographic in the world; adolescent girls living in poverty. But reaching her is only half of the challenge.

The greater half of the challenge is creating research methods that gives her a safe space that allows her to express herself, speak  honestly about her life, her dreams and the real barriers holding her back. This is by being able to speak to a peer researcher using a mobile device

The conventional research methodologies deployed to understand her - often western, adult strangers arriving at her doorstep, asking intimate questions at a moment’s notice, creates an environment where she is unlikely to feel comfortable speaking freely.

The TEGA operational model has the research (design and analysis), tech and field operations as its key elements. GEN (Girl Effect Nigeria) in collaboration with the tech partners and to an extent with the research partners will maintain the TEGA App and monitor connectivity, and design surveys and conduct analysis and report writing.  However, GEN does not have adequate internal resources to translate incoming content from the field from Hausa, Kanuri and potentially other languages to English for a successfully and efficiently analysis of research findings.

    Scope of Work

    • Timely supply and management of translators and recording artists with capacity for a specific local language as may be required by GEN.
    • GEN will ensure key dates are mapped out ahead of time as much as possible, however translators may be expected to be available for work on weekdays and weekends and where possible, should be available at short notice.
    • Translate all contents, scripts and research files from local language to English within a specific timeline as may be specified by GEN.
    • Collate and send translators’ feedback on content and script quality to GEN
    • Work with the Programme officer TEGA to ensure translations and recording artists are of high quality.
    • Manage translators’ timesheet, payment and ensure efficient payment system.
    • Liaise with GEN to equip translators with internet services, workspace and laptops for access to the content hub for TEGA translations.

    Deliverables:

    • Provide translators proficient in translating Hausa to English, English to Hausa, Kanuri to English and English to Kanuri plus any other Nigerian language as may apply to GEN contents,  researches or other products.
    • Manage translation and recording of content timeline, payment and account for translators’ and voice over artists performance.

    About Girls Connect

Girl Effect has recently entered into an exciting partnership with global technology company, iSON, to develop and pilot an innovative IVR platform where girls in northern Nigeria will access inspiring audio content and subsequently will be connected with a female role model to talk through questions they may have, receive support in understanding how they could overcome obstacles they face and ideas for how to apply this new knowledge to their lives.

A successful 4 week pilot was conducted from July to August 2016 with girls aged 15-19 living in Kano state. In September 2016, Girl Effect entered Phase 3 of development and will iterate the model before another round of testing for approximately 8 weeks in early 2017. Our ambition is for Girls Connect to be launched at scale in 2017 after several rounds of prototyping and testing.

Translation during the pilot of both projects and ‘voice over’ recording for Girls Connect had major challenges in identifying translators and recording artists to be able to deliver all the files on time.  There was also the challenge of not having as many translators and recording artists at a time as desired.

Girls Connect provides digital content to girls on a regular basis. With the pilot in Kano, GEN will require continuous translations and voice over of content in a format that is clear, girl friendly and relevant to the girl in Kano state. All voice over artists are expected to be females of between the ages of 20-35.

    Scope of Work

    • Timely supply and management of translators and recording artists with capacity for a specific local language as may be required by GEN.
    • Translators and recording to be available for work on weekdays and weekends and where possible should be available at short notice.  GEN will ensure key dates are mapped out ahead of time as much as possible.
    • Translate all contents and scripts from local language to English within a specific timeline as may be specified by GEN.
    • Work with Girls Connect team to ensure translations and recording artists are fit for purpose, when required
    • Provide ‘voice over’ artists as required for Girls Connect

    Deliverables:

    • Provide translators and ‘voice over’ artists proficient in translating Hausa to English,
    • Manage translation and recording of content timeline, payment and account for translators’ and voice over artists performance.
    • Timely submission of invoice along with timesheet to GEN for payment.

    Requirement for Translators

    • Excellent written skills in English language (written and spoken).
    • Understanding of grammar and punctuation
    • Previous experience as translator will be an added advantage.

The organization should be ready to provide translators and voice over artists at short notice and ensure that the translators and voice over artists are available even during weekends when required. The organization will potentially adopt and manage current translators and voice over artists that have worked on the TEGA project to retain institutional knowledge based on GEN sign off.

    Method of Application

Interested organizations should share their organizational profile, with previous work history including scope.

An expression of interest should also be submitted along with the profile. A budget will be agreed on a project by project basis.
