    Operations Accountant

    Description :    

    This Job Description describes the general nature and level of work to be performed by the employee assigned to this Job Title. It should not be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

    Job Objectives:
    Champion the provision of a comprehensive accountancy service for his/her assigned Business unit, ensuring the Business unit stays is fully in control of all its financial transactions

    Key Responsibilities:

    1) Direct, own and manage financial transaction processing within the Business unit, ensuring amongst others:
    • The final accounts and all other reports agreed with the FCPL are produced in line with agreed timelines
    • Full management and control of the Chart of Accounts/General Ledger of the business unit
    • The integrity of the financial data and records as well as the security of the data entry process within the Business Unit
    • That the balances reported in the financial statements of the business unit are complete and accurate by carrying out appropriate reviews, reconciliations and clearing (as may be required) of balance sheet/control accounts
    • Leadership in recommending improvements to the financial accounting/transaction process
    2) Own and manage the SAP Financials application and all other business systems that interface with it on behalf of the business unit, ensuring amongst others that period opening and closure as well as maintenance of the defined organizational calendar is enforced
    3) Remain up to date with regard to financial requirements and arrangements, advising managers of all relevant changes and interpreting new guidelines to enable a full understanding by staff.
    4) Liaise with all internal and external audit functions, ensuring that relevant information is supplied, assisting with financial accounting related reviews and driving the implementation of recommendations for procedural changes
    5) Provide business analysis and decision support to the head of the business unit through both proactive and reactive performance analysis and also by offering advice on cost management strategies as required.
    6) Build capacity within the Finance team of the business unit by:
    • Continually reviewing the capability needed to support the team unit in delivering on outcomes and ensure action is taken to address identified capability gaps within the Finance function
    • Provide development opportunities for direct reports that challenge and expand their capability
    • Provide leadership that inspires others to succeed and develop, and proactively share experience, knowledge and ideas
    • Ensuring that performance objectives are clearly defined for all job roles within the team and that all staff members are evaluated against agreed performance objectives at pre-defined periods set by the HR function
    • Coaching and counseling team members as necessary

    Key Measurement/Result Areas (covering all perspectives of the FC Balanced Scorecard):

    1) Transaction processing effectiveness (measured by number of days transactions are outstanding as well as accuracy of postings – based on number of GL reversals etc.)
    2) Accuracy of Reports/Release in line with agreed timing
    3) Enforcement of company policy across the Business unit as measured through number & frequency of breaches
    4) Accounts Payable Management (accurate transaction billing, resolution of reconciling items etc)
    5) Compliance with Regulatory stipulations (filing of required returns, taxes etc)
    6) Team development and management

    Qualifications :    
    Functional Requirements/Skills:

    1) Practical and thorough understanding of the principles of Accounting & Financial Management
    2) Demonstrable up-to-date knowledge and understanding of up to date technical financial reporting
    3) Experience of owning and producing statutory financial statements
    4) Experience of managing teams with a range of capabilities
    5) Strong finance system skills including advanced Excel skills

    General Requirements/Skills:

    1) Strong process orientation and analytical skills
    2) Good written and oral communication skills, able to communicate complex financial matters to non-technical experts
    3) Strong commercial awareness
    4) Team player
    5) Ability to bring a “hands on” approach to the work if needed
    6) Positive “can do” spirit
    7) Basic understanding of operations in the Food industry

    Educational Qualifications/Experience:

    1) Minimum of university degree or equivalent
    2) Between 5 – 8 years working experience in a Finance function
    3) Possession of a recognized professional accounting qualification
