The Missionary Construction Manager, Africa, will work in a supporting, advisory and mentoring role to the national Construction Leader and Foreman in the construction of a Surgery Center and Male Ward for ECWA Hospital Egbe. This important volunteer/missionary role will be the vital liaison between the US-based project leader and the national Construction Leader in ensuring clear communication on the myriad of ongoing details related to the construction process from start to finish.
The ideal term for this role would be 1 – 2 years, the time-frame is negotiable.
Key tasks and responsibilities to be supported and advise on include:
- Develop the construction plan and schedule with corresponding project budgets and timelines;
- Work with the national Construction Leader to oversee the hiring, negotiation of payment, and management of work of national construction employees, subcontractor construction crews and temporary workers;
- Monitor the pricing, ordering, and purchasing of construction materials and supplies;
- Ensure quality workmanship through daily inspections and work rounds;
- Be aware of the disbursement of tools and supplies from Workshop and ensure adequate training on the use of tools;
- Adhere to Revitalization Project accounting, billing and documentation processes;
- Work closely with the Hospital Medical Director to facilitate and manage construction schedules pertaining to the Surgery Center and Male Ward new build;
- Ensure process for maintaining open and clear communication with all parties – Revitalization Project Leadership, Medical Director, hospital management, community stakeholders; informing them of status of project regularly;
- Support the missionary and/or national Maintenance Manager in the ongoing development of the maintenance protocols and procedures;
Qualifications/Experience

- Experience in construction to include building foundations, pouring floors and building with cement block from the ground up, electrical, roofing, plumbing, tile installation and roofing
- Experience in managing a large project including human resource management; project oversight, budgeting and project implementation

- The Maintenance Manager will primarily mentor a national Maintenance Manager for the hospital and nursing college. This will involve overseeing the operation, leadership, staff recruitment, and management of the maintenance department to support the maintenance of the hospital and college’s land, buildings, infrastructure, facilities, water, reservoir, and electrical systems, equipment, and vehicles, and the maintenance of the residential homes and recreation areas located on the hospital campus. The Maintenance Manager will ensure that maintenance strategies and schedules are implemented, ensure accurate record-keeping and inventory management, and liaise with vendors on parts acquisitions. He will oversee the development and mentorship of national staff, to ensure performance evaluation, training, and spiritual development. The goal is to ensure the national maintenance manager can take over this role when ready.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit and mentor a Nigerian Maintenance Manager for ECWA Hospital Egbe
- Provide leadership and management training as opportunities arise in these different disciplines: grounds keeping, building maintenance, medical equipment, vehicle and generator maintenance, carpentry, welding, electrical, plumbing, drivers.
- Give guidance and implement best practices and systems to instill a maintenance mindset with proactive upkeep of logs and scheduled maintenance.
- Ensure adequate safety systems are in place
- Ensure the resource of electricity and water are monitored and managed and maintained well
- Responsible for the biomedical portfolio – managing biomed staff, overseeing maintenance of all medical equipment, and inventory of parts and accessories.
- Responsible for the accuracy and safekeeping of the inventory, tools, construction equipment and vehicles
- Provide leadership in record keeping, ordering materials, tracking inventory , financial budget accountability
- Liaise with vendors and overseas suppliers to source parts and equipment; ensuring that records on parts are maintained for future reference
- Support development of policy manuals for the maintenance and security departments
- Responsible for handling personnel issues in the department, fostering an environment of teamwork and accountability
- Encourage the spiritual development of mainteance team.
- Continuously build learning, teaching, and leadership skills within the maintenance and security staff to promote long term sustainability
- Work closely with the Construction Manager to manage shared personnel and resources.
Qualifications/Experience
- Some experience in a variety of gas and diesel engines. There are numerous generators, vehicles, motorcycles, lawn mowers, small engines to maintain along with hospital equipment that may need trouble shooting in order to repair.
- Maintenance mindset with ability to develop and support scheduled maintenance practices to keep everything working on the compound
- Broad experience in plumbing, water systems
- Good working knowledge of generators, electrical wiring, installation and maintenance, battery back up systems and solar power
- Experience in maintaining vehicles, troubleshooting and repair
- Passion to provide team leadership to Nigerian workshop staff
- Ability to lead devotions and give spiritual guidance to co-workers
