    Phyto-Scout Supervisor

    Description 

    • Saro Oil Palm Limited is a subsidiary of Saroafrica International Limited (‘Saro’) an indigenous private sector player with 3 decades of experience in Nigeria.
    • Saro Oil Palm Limited plans to gradually develop integrated oil palm plantations of up to 22,000 ha with complimentary industrial units of mills and refineries over the next few years. This role is intended for Saro Oil Palm Limited, Urhonigbe Forest Reserve, Orhionmwon LGA, Edo State.

    Job Summary

    • A Phyto Scout Supervisor for Oil Palm plantation is a professional responsible for monitoring Oil palm fields for signs of pests, diseases and other problems that could affect their growth.
    • They assess the current conditions of the palms, take samples and data for further investigation, report to hierarchy and plantation management to raise the alarm and ensure control measures are applied.

    Duties

    • Plan and perform visual inspection of Oil Palm fields to assess Oil Palm health and potential risks
    • Identifying and reporting on potential pest and disease issues
    • Collecting and recording detailed crop data
    • Providing regular updates and reports to relevant stakeholders
    • Organize, monitor and supervise the application of preventive and control measures against pests and diseases as per recommended standards
    • Train his team of scouts to be able to identify pests and diseases in Oil Palm fields effectively
    • Organize and supervise his team to ensure effective and efficient scouting daily maximizing the productivity of manpower

    Requirements

    • Minimum of B.Sc (2.1) or HND (Upper Credit) in Agronomy or any similar qualification
    • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a similar position or plantation environment
    • Good knowledge of Oil Palm cultivation and pest management
    • Excellent observational and communication skills
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weathers
    • Ability to identify pests and diseases
    • Good observational skills
    • Knowledge of plant science
    • Ability to use computer software

    Surveyor

    Job Summary

    • The Surveyor will oversee all aspects Land Surveying for the New Oil Palm development operations of the Company.
    • Manage a variety of professional assignments to facilitate the completion and maintenance of roads, building sites, etc.
    • Coordinate findings with work of engineering and architectural personnel, contractors, and others concerned with project.

    Duties / Responsibilities

    • Conduct surveys on land sites and properties
    • Responsible for New Oil Palm Plantation development operations like Survey blocking Out, Tracing, Peg Preparation, Pegging, Measuring, Pillaring and Levelling
    • Undertake land surveys/measurements using a variety of specialist technical equipment (including theodolites, laser alignment devices, satellite positioning systems etc.)
    • Reviewing construction plans and or preparing quantity requirements.
    • Collaborate with engineers and architects on several projects.
    • Conducting standard calculations to identify areas, elevation, etc.
    • Maintains thorough knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and local surveying laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and best practices relative to land surveying.

    Education & Experience

    • B.Sc or HND (2.1 or Upper Credit) in Surveying & Geo-Informatics, Engineering, or a similar field.
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a surveyor in an Oil Palm Plantation or similar role is desirable.
    • Registration and accreditation with the Surveyors Council of Nigeria is an added advantage.
    • Working knowledge of computer applications such as GPS and GIS.
    • Knowledge of physical surveying for building & infrastructure work
    • Thorough understanding and ability to apply methods and standards of technical report writing
    • Excellent team player with ability to work with minimum supervision.

    Procurement Officer

    Job Summary

    • The Procurement Officer will oversee purchasing activities and ensure that purchased items are both cost-efficient and of high quality. He will maintain positive supplier relations, evaluating supply options, approving purchases, and maintaining accurate records by following procurement procedures, maintain an updated list of current and incoming inventory.

    Duties / Responsibilities

    • Assist in the selection of appropriate suppliers and contractors, to promote good procurement practice with due regard to sustainability, ethical purchasing standards and costing.
    • Draft an appropriate service level agreement to properly evaluate the performance of suppliers, and report on this on a regular basis.
    • Work with internal stakeholders (HOUs/HBUs) to determine procurement needs, quality and delivery requirements.
    • Responsible for order placement timing, supply / demand alignment, material replenishment and supplier performance evaluation
    • Make professional decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    • Maintain records of purchases, pricing, and other important data
    • Review and analyze all vendors/suppliers, supply, and price options.
    • Develop plans for purchasing equipment, services, and supplies.

    Qualifications / Experience

    • Minimum of a BSc (2.1) in any Social Science
    • Minimum of 5 years’ working experience as a Procurement Officer
    • Computer literacy qualification is essential. Proven ability to utilize and develop computerized spreadsheets and word processing applications.
    • Procurement Software and Asset Software experience is an added advantage.
    • Age Requirement: 28 – 35 years.

    Planting Supervisor

    Job Summary

    • The Planting Supervisors are personally in charge of the delivery of the planting programme in the zones under their supervision.
    • Their role is to assist the Divisional and Plantation Manager in planning, organizing, and monitoring all planting activities, including land pegging layout, staffing, equipment and inputs.
    • He/ She will achieve best in class process from transfer of seedlings form the main nursery to planting in the field within the budgeted timeframe, under the management of the Division Manager, specifically for the zones assigned to him.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Actively manage the planting team in achieving their targets which are summarized here below:
    • Support the achievement of plantation targets within the agreed budget.
    • Plant the agreed area of palm in time and quality for the budgeted planting programme according to best practice international standards, with the lowest possible mortality rate, and the highest possible growth rate.
    • Maintain the planted palms at the best quality level, through best-in-class fertilization, pest and diseases control, and upkeep practices.
    • Organize and supervise workforce to improve outturn and workers productivity.
    • Respect first in first out management of all plantation stores items.
    • Control the budget allocated for each operation and ensure expenses are within budget.
    • Assist in the training and upskilling of all workforce to best management practices.
    • Support and assist the Divisional Manager and ESG teams in the implementation of all environmental and health and safety initiatives.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of a Second-Class Upper B.Agric (Hons) Degree in Agronomy or Bio-engineering or equivalent subject.
    • Relevant 5 – 10 years professional experience in a similar role and environment. Prior experience in oil palm nurseries is essential.
    • Knowledge and experience of agricultural operations, imperatively in the plantation sector, in Africa.
    • Management/ supervisory skills and experience of managing agricultural teams an advantage.
    • English language essential.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in cross cultural environment.
    • Good IT skills.
    • Age requirement: 28-35 years

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Relevant professional experience in a similar role and environment. Prior experience in oil palm planting is essential.
    • Knowledge and experience of agricultural operations, imperatively in the plantation sector, in Africa.
    • English language essential.
    • Results focussed with the resilience to deliver in a challenging environment.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Knowledge of local languages an advantage.
