    Deputy Head Nurse

    Context

    • MSF has been active in Katsina since February 2021 after carrying an exploratory mission that end up with an opening of the project under the Emergency-Cell.
    • Currently, MSF is running an ITFC (Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre) in Katsina in the Kofar Sauri PHCC and 5 ATFC (Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centre) including four in Jibia LGA (Magama, Daddara, Gubi Magaria and Riko) and one in Katsina City (Kofar Marusa).

    Main Purpose

    • Supporting the Head Nurse through delegated tasks and responsibilities and ensuring the provision of quality patient care by providing clinical supervision and training in the competencies related to their practice according to MSF Health standards and protocols in order to guarantee the security, continuity and quality of health care in the project.
    • Fully assuming the Head Nurse responsibilities in case of absence.

    Job Description

    • Providing support in the clinical supervision and training (e.g. triage, workflow, stock keeping, effective assistance and own regular ward rounds, proper documentation, adherence to MSF policies and protocols, health education, support to staff during procedures, etc.) based on identified needs.
    • Managing the Nurse Supervisors when Head Nurse/Nursing Activity Manager is absent.
    • Collaborating closely with the team in order to provide continuous quality of care in the projects, upholding and respecting the charter of MSF and ensuring that patient interest and autonomy are always respected. 
    • Covering weekend duties according to need and supporting weekend supervisors to provide appropriate supervision for all wards. Attending ward meetings and the weekly medical and expat meetings
    • Providing support in ensuring appropriate infection prevention and control in the hospital.
    • Providing support in maintaining an efficient ward administration i.e. good follow up of the bed status, patients’ movements, ward registers, filling of patients
    • Providing support in checking, reviewing or providing new training on staff safety and hygiene e.g. standard infection control precautions, procedures in case of accidental blood exposure, waste disposal system, etc.
    • Providing support in managing the pharmacy (ensuring the weekly orders are done, managing expired items and regular inventories) In close coordination with the project biomedical service supervising the appropriate use of medical devices and anticipating and communicating future needs.
    • Collaborating with logistics and the Hospital Facilities Manager in ensuring that the infrastructure is maintained in good condition, non-food items are tracked and kept and transfer systems in the hospital are organized. 
    • Supporting the supervisors in the associated HR processes for their team under their responsibility (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, coaching, development and communication) and in planning and organizing their work (rosters, replacement for absences, etc.) and in writing incident reports, disciplinary proceedings as appropriate
    • Providing support in ensuring proper and timely collection and registration of data for inpatient and outpatient departments and participating in monthly reporting according to management guidelines.

    Requirements
    Education:

    • Nursing Degree.

    Experience:

    • Nursing and systems-level experience (either supervisory or managerial)
    • Nutrition and / or pediatric program experience
    • Experience as a nurse supervisor in MSF 
    • Experience in both medical and Nutritional nursing considered a plus

    Languages:

    • Fluency in English (Read, Speak and Write), Hausa and Fulani (Speak) required.

    Knowledge:

    • MSF Medical protocol, Computer literate (Word, excel, internet)

    Epidemiologist

    Context

    Main Purpose

    • Implementing and analyzing data collected during MSF activities (including nutrition and malaria) and main-taining epidemiological surveillance systems/monitoring according to MSF protocols, standards and proce-dures in order to contribute to appropriate evidence-based decision-making making using of well managed health data in outbreak and emergency MSF programs.

    Job Description

    • Carrying out key epidemiological activities in outbreak investigation (description including time, place, people with emphasis on mapping when it is needed) and advising on the operational response
    • Implementing and maintaining a surveillance system to monitor epidemiological trends of relevant outbreak-prone diseases, as necessary. Guiding activities of medical staff for surveillance and/or active case finding, including ensuring understanding of the need for consistent case definitions and data recording (briefing of all new staff).
    • Monitoring and Implementing initial Assessment (for emergency), rapid health assessments and (baseline or follow-up) surveys. Where standard protocols are not available or appropriate, developing a protocol seeking extensive feedback and pilot testing of tools to ensure the objectives will be met robustly with support of HQ epidemiologist
    • Preparing and adapting routine documentation (survey forms, training materials, letters of request/notification, locally appropriate consent forms etc.) with support of HQ epidemiologist. Preparing an appropriate sampling frame and sample selection guidelines with support of HQ epidemiologist
    • Planning and supervising the associated HR processes of the staff under his/her responsibility (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, development, and communication) and ensuring that staff exhibits required skills after training.
    • Managing data systems and ensuring accurate, high quality databases; analyzing results and preparing regular written reports on progress and findings for project and medical coordinator/HQ and when appropriate to external collaborators/networks (MoH, other NGOs, etc.)
    • Providing training sessions to medical teams on relevant aspects of epidemiology and on data tools and line lists to enhance team response capacity
    • Performing any other task, specific to his/her area of specialty, as defined in his/her job description and according to the line manager.

    Requirements
    Education:

    • Medical Doctor (preferable), Nurse or Biomedical Background with a Degree in Epidemi-ology (not in public health).

    Experience:

    • Desirable: 1-2 years in of tropical medicine experience (having assumed coordination position is a plus).

    Essential:

    • Experience in field epidemiology.

    Languages:

    • Fluency in English (Read, Speak and Write), Hausa and Fulani (Speak) required.

    Knowledge:

    • Use of epidemiology related analytical software (excel, Epi-info, STATA or SPSS)

    Paediatrician

    Context

    Main Purpose

    • Provide paediatric care in the hospital or outpatient setting, complying with the most appropriate and up-to-date practices as well as MSF universal hygiene protocols, values ​​and standards, with the aim of improving the health of and young children.

    Job Description

    • Apply their knowledge and medical skills to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of children and newborns and ensure integrated management of pediatric care in emergency departments, outpatient departments, hospital departments for newborns and cases of malnutrition. Prescribe the necessary treatments, in accordance with MSF protocols.
    • Work in close collaboration with the various departments of the hospital/project (eg ATFC, Laboratory). Know, apply, and enforce the latest MSF medical protocols and universal hygiene standards with a view to reducing biological risks and improving infection control
    • As an expert in pediatrics, propose the strategy (modification of the current management of care for newborns and children) and implement it after validation by the Operation and Pediatrics Advisor.
    • Ensure ongoing training (theoretical and practical) of the multidisciplinary medical / paramedical team in order to optimize the quality of care given to newborns and children. Review and discuss selections of difficult cases or mistakes made with technical input
    • Regularly inform patients and their families about the disease and the treatment to be followed and check that the explanations have been understood. Ensure respect for the patient's autonomy and the confidentiality of information; at the patient's bedside adopt the appropriate attitude towards the patient, caregivers and the rest of the medical team.
    • Monitor the progress of patients hospitalized internally: daily visits, consultations and examinations, prescription of the necessary treatments in accordance with MSF protocols ; in collaboration with the other doctors, decide whether they can leave the hospital or be transferred to another department and inform the family of the evolution of the patient's condition.
    • Check the proper functioning of the service, equipment and materials and list the missing items for the care of newborns and children. Contribute to the general organization of the pediatric service, which includes admission, transfer and discharge criteria + referral procedure for complicated pediatric cases.
    • Check and then control the rational distribution of drugs and equipment placed under his responsibility and focus on the quality, disinfection and sterilization of medical equipment. Ensure compliance by all with the hygiene standards in force.
    • Participate in the creation / improvement of the collection and analysis of epidemiological data on newborns and children and verify its validity; inform their direct superior or the project coordinator of any problem or complication with a patient or concerning medical errors. Gather clinical cases for upcoming training sessions and provide feedback to improve MSF protocols.
    • Support MAM (cover during absence) in managing the team under his direct responsibility in accordance with HR policies and procedures; supervise the work, organize and plan the rotation of shift teams and intervene directly in emergencies and on request if necessary.
    • As needed, design and deliver team training sessions.
    • Performing any other task, specific to his/her area of specialty, as defined in his/her job description and according to the line manager.

    Requirements
    Education:

    • Medical degree from a recognized university
    • Paediatrics specialty preferred.

    Experience:

    • Desirable: A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a physician in a paediatric ward
    • Essential: Experience in field epidemiology

    Languages:

    • Fluency in English (Read, Speak and Write), Hausa and Fulani (Speak) required.

    Knowledge:

    • Computer skills (Word, Excel, internet)
    • Update of knowledge before each mission based on the latest MSF protocols concerning new-borns and children.

    Medical Doctor

    Main Purpose

    • Provide outpatient and/or inpatient medical care to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/ beneficiaries health conditions.

    Context Specific Accountabilities

    • Apply medical knowledge and skills in diagnosis and prevention of diseases.
    • Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing necessary treatment to patients while adhering to MSF protocols. 
    • Keep patients informed about their illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow
    • Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients, through daily visits, consultations and examinations
    • Check and control the distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility
    • Ensure that medical equipment’s are properly disinfected and sterilized of the medical material
    • Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
    • Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patient’s illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material. 
    • Ensure ongoing trainings of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize quality of care.
    • Certify that all MSF medical protocols are always followed and implemented • Ensure professional confidentiality is respected.
    • Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures. 
    • Supervising staff performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary

    Requirements
    Education:

    • MBBS Certificate, Desirable certificate in Tropical Medicine and Emergency Response Training (ERT).

    Experience:

    • 2 years’ minimum experience as a Medical Doctor or in clinical work.
    • Knowledge in tropical medicine and medical/humanitarian outbreaks and good understanding of medical emegerncy response.
    • Post-registration experience in Public Health, obs and gynae, pediatrics, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS/STDs, TB, general practice, general medicine or minor surgery.

    Languages :

    • Essential - English and Hausa.

    Knowledge:

    • Essential computer literacy (word, excel, Power Point).
