Job Summary

• The Switchyard Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation, maintenance and supervision of switchyard electrical systems and high-voltage equipment.
• The role involves monitoring switchyard operations, coordinating maintenance activities, troubleshooting electrical faults and ensuring compliance with electrical safety standards and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and monitor the operation of switchyard equipment and high-voltage electrical systems.
• Operate and maintain transformers, circuit breakers, isolators, CTs, PTs/CVTs, busbars, surge arresters and associated equipment.
• Monitor electrical parameters including voltage, current, frequency, power factor and transformer loading.
• Coordinate planned and preventive maintenance of switchyard equipment.
• Conduct inspections of switchyard equipment and identify abnormalities, defects and potential failures.
• Troubleshoot electrical faults and coordinate corrective maintenance activities.
• Ensure proper switching operations and isolation procedures are followed before maintenance activities.
• Prepare and maintain switching schedules, equipment checklists, maintenance records and operational reports.
• Coordinate with control room, generation, transmission and maintenance teams to ensure reliable power supply.
• Monitor transformer performance, oil levels, temperature, protection systems and associated auxiliaries.
• Ensure protection and control systems are operational and report any abnormalities promptly.
• Participate in testing and commissioning of switchyard equipment and protection systems.
• Support relay testing, breaker testing, transformer testing and other electrical diagnostic activities.
• Ensure proper earthing and lightning protection systems are maintained.
• Investigate electrical incidents, trips and equipment failures and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with electrical safety procedures, LOTO requirements and permit-to-work systems.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment performance, faults, maintenance and inspections.
• Support emergency response during electrical faults, equipment trips and power interruptions.
• Ensure housekeeping and safety standards are maintained within the switchyard.
• Participate in root-cause analysis of recurring electrical equipment failures.
• Provide technical guidance to electrical technicians and operators.
• Ensure all activities comply with applicable electrical codes, company standards and HSE requirements.

Requirements

• Possess a B.Tech / B.E ./ HND in Electrical Engineering or Electrical & Electronics Engineering with 5 – 8 years of relevant experience in switchyard, power plant, transmission or high-voltage electrical operations.
• Relevant professional certification will be an added advantage.
• Strong knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems and switchyard operations.
• Knowledge of electrical protection, control and instrumentation systems.
• Good understanding of transformers, circuit breakers, isolators, CTs, PTs/CVTs and busbar systems.
• Experience working with 11kV / 33kV / 132kV or higher-voltage systems will be an advantage.
• Experience in power generation, mining, heavy industry or large industrial plants is preferred.
