    Senior Registrar Oncology

    Job Objective

    • The Senior Resident, Oncology will provide comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based oncological care to oncology patients. The role holder will be responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of various cancers, participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards, supervision of junior medical staff, engagement in clinical research, and contribution to the continuous improvement of oncology services.

    Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

    Clinical Patient Management

    • Diagnose and manage complex oncology cases under consultant supervision.
    • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for cancer patients.
    • Monitor patient responses to therapy and adjust treatment protocols as needed.
    • Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures (e.g., biopsies, tumor markers).
    • Ensure compliance with international oncology care standards.
    • Participate in tumor board discussions for multidisciplinary decision-making.

    Quality & Safety Compliance

    • Adhere to AMCE’s infection control and chemotherapy safety protocols.
    • Report and analyze adverse drug reactions and near-miss events.
    • Participate in hospital accreditation (e.g., JCI) readiness activities.
    • Implement evidence-based guidelines to reduce treatment variability.
    • Conduct regular audits of oncology patient outcomes.
    • Promote a culture of patient safety and error prevention.

    Research & Academic Contributions

    • Lead or participate in clinical trials and oncology research projects.
    • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
    • Collaborate with international research networks and institutions.
    • Apply for grants and funding to support oncology research initiatives.
    • Review and update hospital oncology protocols based on latest evidence.
    • Encourage evidence-based practice among team members.

    Multidisciplinary Collaboration

    • Work closely with surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and palliative care teams.
    • Coordinate patient referrals to allied health professionals such as nutritionists, psychologists etc.
    • Participate in morbidity and mortality (M&M) reviews to improve care quality.
    • Engage in hospital committees related to cancer care improvement.
    • Liaise with international oncology bodies for best practice adoption.
    • Ensure seamless transitions between inpatient and outpatient care.

    Patient & Family Education

    • Counsel patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis.
    • Provide clear explanations of chemotherapy/radiotherapy side effects.
    • Facilitate support group sessions for cancer patients.
    • Address cultural and ethical considerations in patient communication.
    • Ensure informed consent is obtained before treatment initiation.

    Emergency & Critical Oncology Care

    • Manage oncologic emergencies (e.g., febrile neutropenia, spinal cord compression).
    • Lead rapid response for acute cancer-related complications.
    • Stabilize critically ill oncology patients in collaboration with ICU teams.
    • Train staff in emergency oncology protocols.
    • Ensure timely escalation of high-risk cases to consultants.
    • Maintain competency in advanced life support (ALS) and oncology emergencies.

    Supervision & Training of Junior Staff

    • Mentor and supervise junior residents, interns, and medical students.
    • Conduct bedside teaching and case-based learning sessions.
    • Evaluate trainee performance and provide constructive feedback.
    • Assist in developing oncology training curricula and workshops.
    • Ensure adherence to hospital policies and clinical guidelines.
    • Facilitate simulation training for emergency oncology scenarios.

    Administrative & Operational Duties

    • Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records.
    • Ensure compliance with AMCE’s coding and billing regulations.
    • Assist in departmental resource allocation and inventory management.
    • Participate in oncology clinic scheduling and workflow optimization.
    • Contribute to hospital-wide oncology policy development.
    • Represent the department in hospital leadership meetings when required.

    Professional Development

    • Pursue subspecialty certifications (e.g., ESMO certification, ASCO training).
    • Engage in continuous medical education (CME) programs.
    • Seek feedback for performance improvement and career growth.
    • Maintain medical licensure and board certification requirements.
    • Network with global oncology experts for knowledge exchange.

    Must have skills

    • Competency in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems oncology-specific treatment planning software

    Qualifications

    Education, Skills and Competencies

    • Medical Doctor (MD/MBBS) degree from a recognized institution, completion of an Oncology residency program (or equivalent specialized training in Medical Oncology/Clinical Oncology).
    • Proficiency in diagnosing, staging, and managing a wide range of solid tumors and hematological malignancies; expert in chemotherapy administration, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and supportive care.
    • Competency in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, oncology-specific treatment planning software, and other relevant medical software.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex oncological information clearly and empathetically to patients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, fostering collaborative relationships with patients, families, and multidisciplinary oncology teams.
    • Unwavering commitment to ethical medical practice, patient advocacy, and confidentiality in oncology.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide culturally sensitive cancer care to a diverse patient population.
    • Ability to critically appraise oncological medical literature, engage in clinical research, and apply evidence-based practices to patient care.
