    Master

    Roles and responsibilities

    The Master of the vessel is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the ship, including all navigational, operational, and administrative functions. The Master ensures compliance with all applicable International and local maritime regulations, client requirements, industry-wide best practices, and company policies while leading the vessel crew in day-to-day towing operations, assisting vessels during berthing/unberthing, and other related marine services within the vessel’s capabilities in a safe and accident-free manner.

    • Exercise command of the vessel and ensure the safety of the crew, equipment, and the environment.
    • Plan and execute safe navigation and towage operations in ports, terminals, and offshore locations in a cost- and fuel-efficient manner.
    • Ensure compliance with Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) regulations and international maritime laws.
    • Maintain effective communication with pilots, port authorities, terminal operators, clients and company shore-based staff.
    • Maintain up-to-date vessel and crew certificates, documentation, logs, checklists, and inspections, reports and corrective action plans.
    • Oversee maintenance and seaworthiness of the vessel tug, including machinery, hull, and lifesaving appliances and firefighting equipment.
    • Implement and ensure compliance with the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) onboard.
    • Train and supervise subordinate crew members and ensure proper crew discipline, optimal hygiene and welfare.
    • Conduct drills and ensure the vessel is prepared for emergency response scenarios.
    • Maintains a high level of cost discipline in line with approved vessel budget.

    Qualifications, Skills and Experiences

    • Strong leadership and decision-making ability.
    • Good knowledge of local port operations, pilotage, and towage practices in Nigerian and international waters.
    • Familiarity with ISM & ISPS Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC, STCW and other relevant international maritime conventions.
    • Proficient in nautical chartwork, Arpa radar and GPS navigation, and bridge resource management (BRM).
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and in variable sea/weather conditions.

    Minimum level of education required

    • 3 - Bachelor's degree (3 years)

    Minimum level of experience required

    • 3-4 years

    Licenses (seafearers only)

    • Master <500 GT (A-II/3)
