    Janitor Supervisor (Hospital Environment)

    Department: Janitorial Unit
    Reports To: Facilities Manager 

    Job Summary:

    The Janitor Supervisor oversees the day-to-day cleaning operations in a hospital setting, ensuring that all areas are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety. This role involves supervising janitorial staff, assigning tasks, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with infection control and hospital protocols.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Supervise and coordinate the work schedules of janitorial staff across all hospital areas (e.g., wards, theaters, restrooms, offices, waiting areas).
    • Ensure proper cleaning and sanitization of patient-care areas in line with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards.
    • Conduct regular inspections of assigned zones to ensure cleanliness and adherence to hygiene protocols.
    • Train new janitors and provide ongoing coaching on cleaning techniques, safety procedures, and use of equipment/chemicals.
    • Ensure cleaning staff wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols.
    • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies and request replenishment as needed.
    • Report maintenance issues or hazards observed during inspections to the Facilities Manager.
    • Develop duty rosters to ensure adequate coverage for all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
    • Ensure proper handling and disposal of wastes.
    • Maintain records of cleaning logs, shift schedules, supply usage, and staff performance.
    • Handle disciplinary issues, staff conflicts, or performance gaps among janitorial team members.
    • Participate in audits, health inspections, and internal reviews when required.

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Minimum of SSCE or OND; further certification in facility management, environmental health, or housekeeping is a plus.
    • At least 2–3 years of supervisory experience in a janitorial or housekeeping role, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.
    • Good understanding of hospital-grade cleaning procedures, infection control standards, and waste management protocols.
    • Strong leadership, delegation, and team coordination skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
    • Good communication and reporting skills.
    • Familiarity with health and safety regulations and basic emergency procedures.
    • Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

    Working Conditions:

    • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, and infectious waste.
    • Requires use of PPE and regular movement across multiple hospital areas.
    • Fast-paced environment requiring regular multitasking and supervision.
