    Internal Auditor

    Job Summary

    Under the supervision of the Chairperson of the Board with periodic feedback to the Chief Executive Officer of the organization, the internal auditor will ensure checks and balance, compliance to policies and donor agreements. He/ She will work with the external auditor to ensure high quality audits for HALG. He/ She will conduct pre-audit and post-audit each time HALG is undergoing any audit.  The Internal Auditor will add value and improve our operations by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes. The successful candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of accounting procedures and a sound judgement.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Set/ establish and implement standard internal control systems including audit policies and procedures in line with HALG and other acceptable professional standards. 
    • Review reports of periodic inventory taking and establish the veracity of such submissions and advice accordingly.
    • Review the financial management and accounting manual of HALG and the Local Implementing Partner (LIP) and propose appropriate changes when necessary.
    • Conduct regular reviews and update existing internal control systems for HALG to determine their effectiveness and reliance and make sure that recommendations arising from external audit reports are implemented. 
    • Carry out periodic pre-audit exercises on expenditure on projects and organization’s accounts.
    • Conduct periodic post-audit reviews to summarize lessons and make recommendations to Management when needed.
    • Undertakes regular check e.g. the cashier’s records, the imprest account and cash holdings, lodgments and unclaimed wages at the organization. 
    • Conduct random checks on all documents, services, purchases, requisitions, local purchase orders (LPOs), invoices and goods received notes to ascertain whether the items/goods for which payments are to be made had been received. 
    • Assists in the formulations of appropriate anti-fraud policy, code of ethics and the implementation of same.
    • Undertake and conduct occasional audit exercise at the field offices and make appropriate recommendations.
    • Liaise with other departments to evaluate fixed assets register/ inventory register of HALG.
    • Reviews periodic financial returns from field offices.
    • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the board of directors.
    • Maintain open communication with management and audit committee
    • Conduct follow up audits to monitor management’s interventions.
    • Provide needed support to the senior leadership to ensure company compliance to all national and international standards as it affects corporate governance and regulations guiding the smooth operation of the Organisation.
    • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the board of directors.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     Education and/or Experience: 

    • Must possess a first degree in Accounting or any related field of study.
    • Must have minimum of five (5) years’ experience in internal audit or NGO Finance & Project Management.
    • Registered membership of ACA or ACCA or any other related professional body is necessary.
    • Proven knowledge of auditing standards and procedures, laws, rules and regulations of government and donors.
    • Ability to analyses financial matters, resolve issues promptly and accurately.
    • Attention to details excellent analytical skills and sound independent judgement.
    • Good communication skills and report writing skills.
    • Must have demonstrated proficiency using intermediate-level office software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, spreadsheets and database.

    Language Skills:

    • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
    • Knowledge of Local Language preferred.
    • Demonstrated competency in public speaking.

    Computer Skills:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange, Windows operating systems, Power Point.
    • Other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.

    Work Environment:

    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
    • The employee will be required to co-locate with local partners usually in the same office.
    • The employee is required to travel regularly to often insecure and limited resource environments.
