    Hostel Master/Mistress

    DUTIES OF HOUSE MASTER / MISTRESS JOB DESCRIPTION

    General

    • The House Master/Mistress is responsible to the Chaplain of School 
    • The overall leadership and smooth running of the hostel.
    • The supervision and guidance of staff and, above all,
    • The safety and welfare of the students.

    The role involves working closely with other members of the Management staff of various schools, the teaching staff across the School, as well as the wider community of auxiliary staff that help with the establishment of a fair, productive and happy, social and working boarding environment. Ensuring that proactive measures, where possible, are taken to avoid any contravention of the rules, is an essential element of the role.

    Routines

    The House Master/Mistress has to ensure that all students have completed an induction process and that the daily routine is understood and adhered to. Additionally, that the students understand where they should be and why, that they are organised and prepared for their lesson or activity and that supervision of students is appropriate at all times when they are in the hostel as well as outside the hostel and also during trips and excursions. 

    House Rewards and Sanctions

    The House Master/Mistress has to ensure that House rules are adhered to and that responses are both measured and fair in relation to any contraventions. A system of rewards should be followed to recognise compliance of the rules and for good conduct. Matters relating must be recorded and where necessary referred to the Chaplain of the School for further action.

    Staff

    • Hold weekly, recorded, meetings with Hostel staff and fourth nightly with the Chaplain of the school
    • Ensure all staff are fulfilling their duties to a high and professional standard.
    • Be open and honest about performance and to encourage and facilitate professional development.
    • Organise cover for duties as necessary.
    • Lead the ethos of the Boarding House and to foster an atmosphere of calm and caring professionalism among the whole community.
    • Uphold and ensure that the ethos of Word of Faith Group of Schools is engendered in the boarding community.

     Weekend Routines

    • Ensure the provision and coordination of weekend routines with Porters ensuring adequate supervision of boarders
    • Ensure that accurate records of student movements are known and to liaise with duty staff to ensure a wide range of high quality, interesting and fulfilling activities are planned and executed
    • Undertake and maintain risk assessments of the Hostel facility in conjunction with the Maintenance department. 

    Budget

    • To develop, manage, maintain and work within an allocated budget for resources and expenses with clear and open records of expenditure.
    • Contact with Parents
    • House Masters/Mistresses should build a friendly and professional working relationships with parents and carers and ensure regular contact is maintained and recorded. A boarding report for all students in the House, is written by the House Master/Mistress at the end of the 1st and 3rd Terms.

    Communication

    • To participate in the promotion of the boarding experience through regular publications and the use of professional social media accounts.

    Academic

    • Manage and maintain academic study times during the week, be informed and aware of the academic progress of the boarders and initiate and facilitate academic support through the school’s academic staff.

    Health and Safety

    Keep a regular, weekly, record of Health and Safety items and ensure prompt responses to matters relating.

    Responsibilities at the beginning and end of Terms

    • Have knowledge of all students entering the hostel after the holidays
    • Have prepared and assigned each student to a dormitory comprising of others of a similar age, and to disseminate the information to all relevant parties.
    • Make sure all the students have read and understood the Hostel Rules and Expectations. To liaise with the School Chaplain and/or Academic Staff regarding any new boarders or when matters that relate to the school life arise. 
    • Welcome all new boarders and show them their new room and to prepare a ‘new parents’ meeting.
    • Be available at the beginning and ends of the terms for coordination of the start of term.

    JOB DESCRIPTION: HOSTEL PORTER 1

    • Wake students up at the stipulated time, ensure the students take their bath, clean up and lay their beds properly and get ready for school.
    • Inspect students before they go to school.
    • Daily inspection of dormitories to make sure it is neat and well kempt.
    • Inspection of lockers and bags for contrabands in the hostel.
    • Orientating/monitoring the students to ensure that School property isn’t defaced or destroyed.
    • Continuous check during the night to make certain the students are asleep in safe positions.
    • Enforce of siesta, and make certain that sleeping conditions are good
    • Monitor the children during sporting activities.
    • Supervision of prepping activities.
    • Checking of the student’s notes, twice weekly.
    • Ensure the students participate in all indoor and outdoor activities required.
    • Weekly written report to be submitted to the hostel master/mistress.

    JOB DESCRIPTION: HOSTEL PORTER 2

    • Oversee the serving of lunch by prefects.
    • Supervise siesta.
    • Coordinate sporting activities together with the other Porter 1.
    • Supervise evening preps and completion of assignments.
    • Enforce light out at 10:00pm.
    • Call attention of hostel Master/Mistress in the case of emergencies.
    • Report suspicious activities of borders or strangers to the Hostel Master.
    • Coordinate and supervise night prayers/orientations.
    • Ensure students are set, present and also participate in any activity carried out at night. E.g. Holy Ghost and Variety nights.
