Education Assistant at Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS)

Job Summary

The Education Assistant supports the day-to-day implementation of education activities under the EiE project, with a primary focus on Dikwa, Monguno and Ngala LGAs as needed. Working under the supervision of the Education Officer, the role involves facilitating school-based activities, distributing learning materials, and promoting learner participation and wellbeing in line with Safe School Declaration (SSD) standards. The Education Assistant ensures that activities are delivered in accordance with project proposals and donor requirements, while contributing to progress tracking, quality assurance, and impact measurement at the field level.

Key Responsibilities of the position

Role/Mission

• Support the implementation of formal and non-formal education activities in compliance with the project logframe, workplan, budget, and donor requirements.
• Mobilize communities to participate in enrollment drives, back-to-school campaigns, and other education sensitization activities in collaboration with SBMCs, PTAs, LGEA, and local leaders.
• Identify, register, and track out-of-school children (OOSC) for learning programs based on JRS and donor criteria, ensuring inclusive access for vulnerable learners including children with disabilities.
• Assist in organizing and facilitating education sessions, sports/recreational, and psychosocial support activities in learning spaces alongside volunteer teachers.
• Distribute teaching, learning, and recreational materials, ensuring proper documentation, inventory control, and adherence to distribution protocols.
• Monitor school attendance, support follow-up for at-risk children, and report education and protection concern through appropriate channels.
• Support training and mentoring teachers and SBMCs on pedagogy, child protection, PSEA, and other relevant themes.
• Assist in the preparation of weekly workplans and contribute to planning documents to ensure timely and quality implementation.
• Participate in needs assessments, school profiling, and data collection activities in collaboration with MEAL and education teams.
• Monitor the safety and accessibility of school infrastructure, WASH facilities, and ensure learning environments are protective and inclusive.
• Ensure implementation of Complaints and Feedback Mechanisms (CFM) in schools and support documentation and resolution of feedback.
• Supervise community volunteers and enumerators, provide field-level oversight, and report on performance or capacity gaps.
• Liaise with government education offices (LGEA, SUBEB, Ministry of Education) to support smooth implementation and alignment with education sector priorities.
• Promote safeguarding and PSEA standards within schools and learning spaces, and model respectful and protective behavior toward all children and stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate records of distributions, school visits, training sessions, and learning achievements, ensuring accountability and transparency.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the Education Officer or Project Director.

Required Profile 

Qualification

• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or related field.
• At least 1–2 years of experience in supporting education projects, preferably in emergency settings,  including direct work with internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and other vulnerable populations.
• Ability to work well with children, parents, and community structures.
• Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
• Basic proficiency in English; fluency in local languages (Kanuri, Hausa) is desirable.

Experience and Skills

• Solid understanding of the education context and humanitarian response in Northeast Nigeria, with prior experience in Dikwa and familiarity with key local stakeholders considered an asset.
• Experience implementing education programs in emergency settings and mainstreaming Out-of-School Children (OOSC) to formal learning
• Prior involvement in ECHO-funded projects and knowledge of international humanitarian and child protection standards, including DO NO HARM principles, is preferred.
• Proficient in the use of MS Office applications and able to produce clear and accurate reports and documentation.
• Strong analytical and communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to convey information respectfully and effectively in multicultural and high-pressure environments.
• Demonstrated integrity, adaptability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team in changing field conditions.
• Fluent in English and Kanuri; knowledge of additional local languages is an asset.
• This position is open to indigenes of Borno State with traceable professional references.
