    Chief Editor

    GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

    The Editor-in-Chief (Nigeria) will work alongside the Regional Editor and Regional Coordinator (who are based in Ndjamena), the Country Director in Nigeria and the team of nearly 35 journalists, producers, administrators, freelancers and technicians in Maiduguri. He/she will be responsible for the quality of subject matter, production values ​​and structure of interviews, vox pops, news and current affairs, health, youth and other programs. He/she will also regularly update the editorial guide and ensure that all journalism and production staff understand it, and lead the recruitment of broadcast journalists. He/she will also work with the Head of Operations and Finance and Human Resources, and be involved in the

    The Editor-in-Chief (Nigeria) provides day-to-day support to broadcast program operations, working closely with the Country Director and Regional Editor. He/she reports directly to the Regional Editor and Country Manager (Nigeria), with dotted lines to the Directors of Okapi Consulting and the Johannesburg-based CFO. As part of his responsibilities, the Editor-in-Chief (Nigeria) will carry out management, administrative, logistical and programmatic duties. He/she will quickly and efficiently provide all necessary program support to ensure that all programs are aired on time, and are in line with RNI project and donor objectives.

    ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Lead the RNI editorial team in Nigeria in the successful production and broadcast of high quality programs.

    • Support the Regional Coordinator and Country Director (Nigeria) to ensure that management and monitoring systems enable the production and delivery of programs of the highest quality.

    • Provide the necessary training to all members of the on-air, journalism and production team.

    • Update, manage and maintain a database accessible to all staff on contacts and useful speakers, participants, etc. for all languages.

    • Ensure that new journalists, on-air and production staff receive comprehensive and relevant career orientation within 5 days of hiring.

    • Proactively brief Directors, Regional Coordinator and Nigeria Country Director on issues and grievances and provide feedback to journalists, on-air and production staff.

    • Ensure adherence to editorial standards as outlined in the editorial guide, and keep abreast of all relevant rules and regulations in the staff handbook.

    • Behave, both professionally and personally, in a way that brings honor to RNI and does not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.

    • Contribute, edit and ensure the timely posting of daily news to the English language website

    • Write appropriate proposals (in agreement with the regional coordinator and directors), and respond to calls for tenders and requests for proposals.

    • Produce program schedules as needed, taking into account regular changes in shortwave frequencies.

    Under the responsibility of: Regional Editor-in-Chief

    Supervisory responsibility: on-air staff, production and technical staff, and journalists in Nigeria.

    Works directly with: All Editorial Staff, Heads of Program Departments, Regional Editor, Regional Coordinator, Nigeria Country Director and Okapi Directors.

    Knowledge and experience

    • University degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience

    • 5 to 10 years of professional experience in an audiovisual media environment, of which at least 2 years in a similar role.

    • Demonstrated understanding and proven experience in managing production staff, journalists and on-air talent.

    • Proven experience in international and/or development environments.

    • In-depth knowledge and experience of the Lake Chad Basin environment and understanding of the regional historical, social, political and conflictual context.

    • High level of proficiency in MS Office, digital editing, production (including drama), and demonstrated interest and ability in social media.

    • Ability to effectively communicate, influence and problem solve across diverse cultures and geographic distances with sensitivity.

    • Fluency in English is essential, fluency in French is highly desirable.

    The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communication skills and must be good listeners. He/she must have excellent analytical, reasoning and judgment skills. He/she will also be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and will demonstrate a great understanding of the cultural and social environments that exist in the region and will have the willingness and ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people. . He/she will develop and maintain productive professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholders within the organization and throughout the radio project.
