    Business Development Manager

    About AgriServe

    AgriServe is part of the Business Incubation Platform of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA-BIP) in Ibadan, Nigeria (www.iitabip.org). Established in 2013 as the business platform of IITA, IITA-BIP links research for development (R4D), commercialization and capacity development through the establishment of full scale production facilities, the creation of supply chain models and raw materials processing for various crops, intended for adoption and replication by the private sector. It also serves to stimulate product development, provides expertise and training in commercial agriculture and farm management, and market expansion. Products and services offered by IITA-BIP are developed using IITA’s science and technologies.

    To offer these services IITA-BIP comprises of different units; Aflasafe (bio pesticide), NoduMax (legume inoculants), GoSeeds (improved seeds varieties and genetics), Microbiology lab (tissue culture and genetics), Cropnuts AgriServe Ltd. (soil, water and fertilizer testing and consultations) and AgriServe.

    AgriServe provides commercial agricultural production services, agricultural consulting services, business development and agricultural mechanization services throughout Nigeria. To do so, AgriServe works closely with the other IITA-BIP units and a team of IITA Youth-Agripreneurs to optimise performance and services.

    AgriServe shares the IITA-BIP mission to create jobs and boost the income, nutrition, and health of poor rural women and men by providing better access to improved agricultural technologies, products and services that will enhance their agricultural productivity while sustaining natural resources.

    Job description and responsibilities

    With high level of support from the IITA-BIP management team, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for optimizing the performance, productivity and profitability of operations of AgriServe, which includes:

    • Conducting market research and identifying new target market initiatives;
    • Developing and executing a business plan, marketing- and sales strategies;
    • Networking, pursuing and actively following up with (new) clients and market leads;
    • Developing and transforming quotes and proposals into contracts with a down payment;
    • Developing feasibility studies for Agriserve commodities;
    • Developing and delivering on IITA-BIP management team approved annual budgets;
    • Developing and reporting on finances, results and activities to IITA-BIP management team on monthly basis;
    • Overseeing customers service, support, sales, follow-up processes, invoicing and debt collection;
    • Hiring, training and overseeing a small office-team and IITA Youth-Agripreneurs;
    • Attending and participating in conferences, industry events and field visits;
    • Coordinating and working closely together with other IITA-BIP units, especially Cropnuts AgriServe Ltd. to optimise performance and services;
    • Other tasks related to business development.

    Required qualifications and skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business development, sales, marketing or related field;
    • At least 5 years professional experience in agricultural business development, sales, marketing or related field;
    • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task;
    • Ability to set targets and meet deadlines;
    • Ability to work independently, be proactive and handle uncertainty;
    • Willingness and ability to perform on commission basis;
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills and IT fluency;
    • Excellent networking skills;
    • Excellent organisation skills;
    • Results driven and goal-oriented;
    • Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
