Agric Extension Assistant Officer at Global Village Healthcare Initiative for Africa (GHIV Africa)

Purpose: 

The Agricultural Extension Officer will provide critical support to the nutrition project by disseminating agricultural knowledge, promoting best practices related to nutrition-focused agriculture, and bridging the gap between research findings and the practical application within local farming communities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Regularly visit farms to provide hands-on guidance and support.
• Monitor and evaluate the implementation of nutrition-sensitive agricultural practices and provide feedback.

Training and Capacity Building:

• Conduct training sessions for farmers on sustainable and nutrition-sensitive agricultural practices.
• Coordinate with local stakeholders, including farmer groups and community leaders, to ensure uptake of improved techniques.

 Research and Knowledge Transfer:

• Stay updated with the latest research on crops and farming practices that have a positive impact on nutrition.
• Disseminate research findings and technical information to farmers and stakeholders in an easily  understandable manner.

Collaboration and Networking:

• Collaborate with other departments, institutions, and NGOs to strengthen the nutrition-agriculture nexus.
• Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences related to nutrition and agriculture to foster partnerships  and stay updated on industry trends.

 Reporting and Documentation:    

• Prepare and submit regular progress reports detailing the activities conducted, challenges faced, and recommendations. 
• Document success stories and case studies to showcase the impact of the nutrition project on local communities

Competencies:

• Technical Knowledge: Proficient understanding of agricultural practices and their nutritional implications.
• Training of farmers as a facilitator is merit
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively transfer knowledge.  
•  Interpersonal Skills: Ability to engage with and motivate farmers and community members. 
•  Problem Solving: Ability to diagnose challenges in the field and recommend appropriate solutions
•  Adaptability: Ability to work in diverse environments and adjust strategies based on the local context.
•  Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders to achieve project goals.

Field Work and Farmer Engagement:

Educational Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Sociology, Anthropology, Nutrition, or a related field. A Master's degree will be an added advantage.
• At least 2-3years of experience in agricultural extension services, with a focus on nutrition-sensitive agriculture preferred.
• Knowledge of local agricultural practices and challenges.
• Proficient in the use of agricultural and office software tools.
