    Accident & Emergency Nurse

    Job Summary 

    The Accident & Emergency Nurse provides clinical care to and supports triage and emergency treatment of patients suffering from acute and long-term illnesses, diseases or those requiring surgery. The post holder must have the ability to work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural team in A&E to deliver the highest quality of care.

    Key Responsibilities

    Clinical & Emergency Care

    • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care for emergency presentations.
    • Undertake nursing interventions based on evidence-based practice and respond promptly to patient deterioration or emergencies.
    • Preserve patient dignity and rights always, including during high-pressure or critical incidents.
    • ·Provide health education and counseling to patients and families using resourceful and innovative approaches.

    Emergency Procedure Management

    • Perform triage, monitor vital signs, and initiate interventions according to hospital emergency protocols.
    • Administer medications and emergency treatments safely and per protocol.
    • Respond to adverse incidents, emergencies, and critical events within scope of practice.

    Quality Control & Compliance

    • Adhere to clinical guidelines, hospital policies, and infection prevention protocols.
    • Maintain high standards of care, integrating quality initiatives into practice.
    • Support accreditation processes and participate in audits, KPIs, and quality improvement activities.

    Safety Management

    • Promote patient and staff safety by identifying and mitigating clinical and operational risks.
    • Ensure all medical devices and equipment are maintained in safe working order and used appropriately.
    • Take immediate and appropriate action in emergencies and adverse events.

    Communication & Coordination

    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
    • Provide structured handovers to ensure continuity of care.
    • Maintain regular communication with the Unit Manager on patient care, workflow, and operational issues.

    Problem-Identification & Escalation

    • Identify patient deterioration, clinical complications, or operational challenges promptly.
    • Take appropriate action within scope of practice and escalate complex cases to the Unit Manager or relevant physician.

    Documentation & Reporting

    • Maintain accurate records of patient assessments, treatments, and clinical interventions.
    • Complete incident reports, medication administration records, and unit-specific documentation according to hospital policy.
    • Use documentation to support patient safety, auditing, and continuous quality improvement.

    Risk Awareness & Management

    • Continuously identify and assess risks related to patient care, clinical procedures, and unit operations.
    • Implement risk mitigations strategies in collaboration with the Unit Manager and multidisciplinary team.
    • Report and document all identified risks, near misses, and incidents according to hospital policies.

    Creativity & Continuous Improvement

    • Suggest workflow, process, and patient care improvements to optimize A&E operations.
    • Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives and accreditation activities.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills through continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.

    Requirements

    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in emergency nursing (recent experience preferred).
    • Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
    • Proficiency in emergency nursing procedures, triage, patient assessment, and emergency medication administration.
    • Knowledge of infection control, patient safety, and hospital emergency protocols.
    • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.
    • Ability to prioritize care, act decisively in emergencies, and maintain meticulous documentation.
    • Flexibility regarding shift patterns and clinical areas.
    • Experience mentoring or teaching junior staff is an advantage
