    Teacher In-Service Specialist

    Position Summary

    • Creative is seeking a Teacher In-Service Specialist for an anticipated donor-funded project in Nigeria aiming to enable more effective state and non-state systems to deliver foundational skills to all children.
    • The Teacher In-Service Specialist is responsible for leading the development and implementation of an evidence-based in-service teacher training model for bilingual learning with literacy instruction.

    Reporting & Supervision:

    • The Teacher In-Service Specialist reports to the Teacher Education Advisor.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Ensure consistent and quality delivery of training at the master training of trainers (TOT) and teacher training levels;
    • Collaborate with Materials Development Specialist and Curriculum Development Advisor to contribute to the development of project reading instruction materials;
    • Develop TOT manuals and cluster-led training guides to facilitate greater understanding of early literacy pedagogical components and guide implementation of scripted plans and continuous assessments;
    • Collaborate effectively with Ministry of Education on training activities while building capacity;
    • Ensure all teacher behavior and learning materials are gender-sensitive, respond to needs of children with disabilities, and be respectful of student diversities;
    • Manage the outputs and performance of state-based personnel; and
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Required Skills & Qualifications

    • Master's Degree in education or related pedagogically oriented field;
    • At least four (4) years of experience in work specifically to improve education programming directed to rural, ethno-linguistic underserved populations;
    • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of teacher professional development;
    • Proven experience developing effective training materials;
    • Prior experience with supporting family/community engagement of education outcomes;
    • Professional proficiency in written and spoken and English; and
    • Fluency in English and other relevant local languages.

    English Language Specialist

    Position Summary

    • Creative is seeking an English Language Specialist for an anticipated donor-funded project in Nigeria aiming to enable more effective state and non-state systems to deliver foundational skills to all children.
    • The English Language Specialist is expected to:
      • Communicate clearly, accurately, efficiently, and courteously;
      • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, and funders; and 
      • Work collaboratively with colleagues to produce high- quality products in a timely manner, demonstrating leadership and initiative.

    Reporting & Supervision:

    • The English Language Specialist will report to the Curriculum Development Advisor.

    Primary Responsibilities
    The English Language Specialist will:

    • Coordinate the development of English early literacy standards with government stakeholders and international STTA, ensuring alignment with Hausa standards and with overall literacy expectations for Nigeria;
    • Provide leadership for the development and/or adaptation of English-language curricula and instructional materials, in coordination with the ICT and materials development specialist;
    • Develop, implement, and support teacher, school leader, and local government authority staff training in English early literacy methods and materials, in coordination with the teacher training specialist;
    • Coordinate with staff in state offices to ensure the fidelity and quality of English program implementation at the school level;
    • Coordinate with the monitoring and evaluation team to develop knowledge-sharing efforts related to English early literacy, including communication briefs and presentations on achievements and lessons learned; and
    • Coordinate with the project director and home office technical team to share lessons learned, problem-solve, and ensure that work in the field meets the highest standards of quality and is consistent with the state of the art in early grade literacy.

    Required Skills & Qualifications

    • Master's degree and over five (5) years of related experience in standards development, teacher training, and materials development in early grade reading and writing in English;
    • Experience working with complex projects and collaborating with professional peers on joint products;
    • Knowledge of and experience with primary school context;
    • Knowledge of and experience with English language curriculum;
    • Teacher training and teacher coaching experience;
    • Teaching/learning materials development experience;
    • Team player and willingness to learn;
    • Experience working with Nigerian government counterparts (at national, state, and  Local Government Education Authority levels) to design, implement, support, and monitor education programming;
    • Travel to project states required;
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
    • Proficiency in Hausa is a plus;
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; and
    • Prior experience with USAID-funded projects.

    Assessment and Standards Advisor

    Position Summary

    • Creative is seeking an Assessment and Standards Advisor for an anticipated donor-funded project in Nigeria aiming to enable more effective state and non-state systems to deliver foundational skills to all children.
    • The Assessment and Standards Advisor will be responsible for coordinating the development of English early literacy standards with government stakeholders and international STTA, ensuring alignment with Hausa standards and with overall literacy expectations for Nigeria.
    • The advisor will work closely with the project technical teams to provide technical guidance and support field activities to improve teachers’ ability to use continuous assessment and assess their progress; improve reading standards and benchmarks; and strengthen school monitoring practices.
    • S/he will also work closely with the Ministry of Education in the areas of student assessment and reading standards and benchmark setting and dissemination.

    Reporting & Supervision:

    • This position is housed in Abuja, Nigeria, reporting to the Team Leader.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Coordinate the development of English early literacy standards with government stakeholders and international STTA, ensuring alignment with Hausa standards and with overall literacy expectations for Nigeria;

    • Managing support staff and consultants as needed to ensure the smooth implementation of project activities teams in the areas of continuous assessment, school monitoring, and standards and benchmark-setting;
    • Ensure the timely production, coordination, and reporting of all data: quarterly reports, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) data, financial information, etc.;
    • Lead regular meetings and maintain regular communication with state level team counterparts, to ensure coherent planning, M&E practices, and project troubleshooting; and
    • Represent the project in major state meetings and events as appropriate.

    • Good communication and interpersonal skills are required;
    • Knowledge of USAID Rules and Regulations, previous experience working on USAID-funded projects is preferred; and

    • Employ a proven coaching protocol and procedure that will be implemented at the school and district level and monitored at the provincial level;
    • Effectively train and manage the combination of trainers, reading coaches and teachers;
    • Work with trainers/coaches to provide the skills and materials to continually improve, adapt, and cater trainings based on post-test performance data and information on individual teacher performance gathered during coaching sessions;
    • Develop coach recruitment and selection criteria, formalize certification of coaches, and work to institutionalize a coach incentive package;
    • Collaborate effectively with Ministry of Education on training activities while building capacity.
