    PRINCIPAL DRILLING ENGINEER - OPTIMISATION AND PLANNING

    Position Description
    Review well engineering planning, the drilling process and completion activities with a view to improving performance

    Position Requirements
    1.Review and revise databases, especially the reporting database (IDS) to ensure data is adequately and correctly organised ready for use and easy to access.
    2.Carry out a monthly review of the Technical Work Plan (TWP) to optimise well delivery and minimise costs.
    3.Compare actual drilling schedules to planned schedule and highlight challenges that could impede successful well operations.
    4.Perform preliminary well planning at the project identification and evaluation stages.
    5.Use DWOP results to determine means of improving well plans to save cost or reduce time and provide feedback to the operating teams in this respect.
    6.Evaluate opportunities for drilling optimization and utilization of drilling technical limit concepts for wells in order to improve operational efficiency.
    7.Ensure, on a weekly basis, the compilation of each team’s performance data and present feedback to the operation as means of encouraging performance improvements.
    8.Oversee the compilation of the Quarterly and Annual Performance Reports. Coordinate and facilitate quarterly meetings to review and critique the periodic performance.
    9.Ensure the timely availability of comparative statistics of actual well performance against Rushmore benchmarks.
    10.Ensure the timely update of the Rushmore database, promote the use of the data amongst the rig teams and provide performance benchmarking statistics.
    11.Review new materials, tools, techniques and procedures and recommend trials of those that have a high degree of success to effect performance improvements. Develop proposals for the trials and document the results, justifying the implementation if successful.
    12.Review and remain up to date with the company/statutory guidelines for drilling, completion and testing operations. Ensure drilling teams are aware of any changes and monitor compliance with same.
    13.Management of all drilling software, ensuring its availability, the timely installation of upgrades and arranging training as required. Ensure the timely payment of annual fees, etc.
    14.The review of new software / systems and recommend and arrange trials of programmes or systems that will improve efficiency.
    15.Oversee the management of the Wellbore Survey Database ensuring compliance with Company policies and procedures.
    16.Coordination of After Action Reviews and periodic Lessons Learnt meetings and ensuring the close out of action items.
    17.Review, optimise as required and standardise End of Well Reports (EOWR) across all OML’s. Ensure the timely availability of EOWR’s, directional end of well reports, mud recaps, etc by working with each operating team to have these reports issued in a timely manner.
    18.Oversee provision of performance data for TECOM’s and other meetings.
    19.Develop the annual drilling budget, working closely with Well Cost Accounting and the Principle Engineers in each drilling team.
    20.Supervise and mentor engineers on the role of Optimisation Engineer.

    ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
    1.Organized database in line with agreed departmental structure.
    2.Availability of updated and accurate TWP’s for every rig operation.
    3.Publishing of periodic Performance Reports to be shared across the teams and review meetings.
    4.Updating the Rushmore database and ensuring the statistics are utilised in well planning.
    5.New tools and process are properly analysed, benefits demonstrated and properly contracted.
    6.Accuracy and availability of End of Well Reports.
    7.Accuracy and maintenance of the Permanent Electronic Well File system and ensuring adequate back-up.

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS / PERFORMANCE GOALS:
    1.Organized Database Structure.
    2.Timely availability of accurate and up to date TWP’s for each drilling team.
    3.Accurate, good quality and annotated annual drilling budget.
    4.Accurate and up to date tracking of well planning and drilling schedules.
    5.Up to date Rushmore database.
    6.Timely availability of periodic Performance Reports and corresponding review meetings.
    7.Trials of new equipment, tools, procedures or processes.
    8.Closure of action items from AAR’s, NPT, lessons learnt and other operations meetings.
    9.Planning and operations compliance with regulations and Company’s policies and procedures.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
    BS degree in Engineering (minimum)
    Member, Society of Petroleum Engineers. Member IADC. Attended industry courses in well engineering, well operations management, project management.
    > 15 years

    KEY COMPETENCIES REQUIREMENTS:
    Good technical knowledge of well planning and operations. Ability to analyse well operations and determine areas requiring improvement.
    Resourceful, self starter with the imagination and initiative to improve well operations.
    Team leader with presentation and organisational capabilities, able to coordinate and facilitate meetings.
    Good interpersonal skills, communications and organizational skills are essential.

    PRINCIPAL DRILLING ENGINEER

    Position Description
    Oversee well engineering planning and provide technical support for drilling operations.
     

    Tasks:
    1.Well and completion planning in accordance with the Well Delivery Process.
    2.Provide planning schedules for all drilling programs.
    3.Track schedules and monitor implementation to schedule.
    4.Provide initial well timelines for planning purposes, drilling time curves, and initial cost estimates. Review with drilling superintendent and Head drilling engineering.
    5.Acquire planning data from geology, reservoir engineering or geophysics as necessary.
    6.Carry out offset well data analysis.
    7.Design drilling/completion and work-over programs.
    8.Recommend means of avoiding drilling problems, eg wellbore instability, lost circulation, stuck pipe.
    9.Work with various service vendors to ensure plans are achievable.
    10.Provide engineering support/advise to the rig on program implementation.
    11.Generate AFE for programs.
    12.Actively monitor implementation of programs.
    13.Ensure provision of End of Well reports.
    14.Provide proper technical and commercial input to tender documents for services and products.
    15.Assist in tender evaluations as necessary.
    16.Provide detailed Scope of Work for drilling services.
    17.Carry out contracts management related to operations as required.
    18.Manage drilling and completion database.
    19.Mentor younger engineers.

    ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
    1.Provision of well schedules, job schedules, updates and monitoring of performance.
    2.Monitoring contract performance, ensuring the technical and commercial conditions are fully met.
    3.Ensuring proper research of offset data for wells planned is conducted.
    4.Ensuring all well plans are technically sound, feasible and cost effective, and giving full consideration to all HSE aspects.
    5.Ensuring well equipment proposed for drilling, completing or work-over of planned wells is available, fit for purpose, and meet the QA/QC standards required for the application.
    6.Ensuring contribution to application to drill is done timely.
    7.Ensuring well AFE’s are accurate and provided in time.
    8.Ensuring timely provision of well programs in accordance with WDP.
    9.Monitor implementation of well programs and ensure it is in compliance with plans and that all KPI’s and NPT targets are met.
    10.Ensuring all required reports are accurate and distributed to all who require them.
    11.Ensuring well performance data such as planned vs actual drilling time and cost curves, cost/ft, etc are tracked daily.
    12.Ensuring operations are in line with regulations.
    13.Ensure all statutory approvals for well programs are obtained.
    14.Ensure drilling and completion database is routinely updated and organized for easy use.

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS / PERFORMANCE GOALS:

    1.Well time and cost estimates based on probability models.
    2.Compliance with Well Delivery Process.
    3.Detailed risk register with identified risks mitigated.
    4.Detailed drilling, workover and completion programs signed and issued at least two weeks to commencement of programs.
    5.Continuous monitor of well plans by means of performance sheets and KPI’s to ensure plans are achieved.
    6.DWOP/CWOP Sessions on all programs
    7.Propose process change, tool or equipment utilisation to improve performance or cut cost.

    FINANCIAL DIMENSIONS

    Well budgets of $80 - $100 million per year.

    SENIOR COMPLETIONS ENGINEER

    Position Description
    Well Design and Supervision of Completion / Workover Programs.
     

    Tasks:
    1.Responsible for offshore/onshore well completion planning. Ensure completion plans are suitable for the well.
    2.Responsible for supervision of execution on the rig as needed.
    3.Ensure optimization of completion plans.
    4.Write detailed completion programs for all well types
    5.Hold planning meetings, CWOP’s etc. and ensure actions are taken to mitigate all risks in the program.
    6.Visit contractors and ensure tool selection is correct and meets all QA/QC requirements.
    7.Ensure Addax database is properly updated and useful for obtaining completion planning information.
    8.Monitor completion performance and provide benchmark statistics to ensure completions are time and cost effective.
    9.Provide charts of well completion performance for daily review, and engineering reports for the company as well as reports for NAPIMS and DPR.
    10.Establish completion KPI’s and monitor NPT performance.
    11.Provide detailed scope of work for completions and related services as needed for tendering or contracting purposes.
    12.Ensure completion contracts are valid for all jobs planned.
    13.Mentor drilling and completion engineers.

    ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
    1.Ensure proper and detailed research of offset data for completion of wells.
    2.Ensure well completion plans are feasible and meet HSE and technical standards.
    3.Ensure timely provision of completion programs.
    4.Ensure proper QA/QC is carried out on all completion equipment.
    5.Improvement of completion practices
    6.Ensure all completion info is tracked and database properly updated.
    7.Ensure accurate completion performance data is provided for records.
    8.Ensure completion performance data are updated regularly as required.
    9.Ensure all required reports on well completion implementation are distributed to relevant persons daily.
    10.Ensure completion component of “End of Well” reports are written, detailed and accurate.
    11.Ensure NPT performance targets are met in well programs.

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

    1.Completion time and cost estimates based on probability models.
    2.Compliance with Well Delivery Process.
    3.Detailed workover and completion programs signed and issued at least one month to commencement of programs.
    4.Continuous monitor of well plans by means of performance sheets and KPI’s to ensure plans are achieved.
    5.CWOP Sessions on all programs
    6.Lessons learnt meetings on all wells.
    7.Keep NPT related to completion operations below 10%.
    8.Propose process change, tool or equipment utilisation to improve performance
    9.Actual well performance below AFE/Budget.
